COTTON BLOSSOM CARUTHERSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL CARUTHERSVILLE, MISSOURI VOLUME 36 CELEBRATION ’85 O ’85 TABLE OF CONTENTS FACULTY 7 ORGANIZATIONS .. 17 SPORTS 29 FEATURES 65 CLASSES 105 SENIORS 131 INDEX 169 3 I The year 1985 was one big Celebration! and the students at CHS had a lot of things to celebrate. It all began the first day of school. The freshmen were anxious; the sophomores glad not to be the underdog; the juniors looking forward to Prom; and last, the Seniors were celebrating their final year of high school. The football season started the first week of school. The Tiger boys had a tough season and fought long and hard but just couldn’t get the breaks. Everyone celebrated at the Homecoming game as Jerrianne Malone was crowned Homecoming Queen and the Tigers won over the East Prairie Eagles. After that came the Christmas holidays which were a great break for all the students, even though they were shorter than usual. But we got more vacation days in the next couple of weeks as school was cancelled several times because of the snow. The Basketball season was in full swing after the Christmas break, but our team wasn’t. 4 The Tiger cagers went through their worst season in history as they lost every game enroute to a 0-21 season. In February the annual Cotton Blossom Dance was held with Anna Nelson being crowned the Queen. The rest of the school celebrated with Anna making it one of the most successful Cotton Blossom Dances ever. The spring sports did very well for Caruthersville High School with the most celebrated team being the Tiger baseball team. They enjoyed one of their finest seasons in their brief history as they won the district championship and went to the state playoffs before they were finally beaten. The club will lose many key players but we will be hearing from the baseball team in the years to come. The biggest thing the spring has to offer at Caruthersville High School is the Prom, the biggest event of the year. This year’s Prom was one to be celebrated as the Juniors did an excellent job of decorating the gym and Community 5 Center. The night was a very special one for many couples at CHS and many memories were made. After the Prom the Seniors didn’t have long to go. They all enjoyed their last weeks of school as they walked the halls of Caruthersville High School for the last time. The Senior Class of 1985 was one celebrating class. They will forever be known for their celebration habits. Nobody will ever forget those special times they had and the special friends they made. Then it was indeed time to celebrate. Graduation was held on May 30, 1985 ending all of the celebration activities for the school but the students of CHS especially the Seniors will celebrate for the rest of their lives. As to the future — Celebrate good times ... come on!!!” 6 Faculty and Administration FACULTY i SUPER- INTENDENT Mr. Carl Hutchison serves as the Superintendent of the Caruth-ersville School District. Fourth row - Head Coach Lloyd Block, Manager Curtis Boyds, Brad Treece, Britt McClendon, Mike Lack, Dustin Dowling, Trainer Marion Morgan, Assistant Trainer Chuck Jones, and Assistant Coach Roy The 1984 Tiger football season was a disappointment as far as wins and losses, but if you look at the players' hustle and determination it was a successful season. The season started off with a game against the Rivercrest Colts. The Colts proved to be too much for the Tigers as they won easily 30-0. Next, for the Tigers was their archrival, the Hayti Indians. The game was a close and hard-fought battle but the Tigers eventually lost to the Indians for the first time in ten years, 20-18. The first home game for the Tigers was against the Dexter Bearcats. On the first play of the game an apparent touchdown pass by the Tigers was called back on an inadvertant whistle'' by the referee. The Tigers then scored a touchdown and completed a two-point conversion, and led throughout the game until a touchdown with nine seconds to play and a subsequent two-point conversion by Dexter sent the game into overtime. The Tigers got the ball first in overtime and quickly lost it on a fumble. Dexter then received the ball and scored on their third chance to win 14-8. Next on the Tigers schedule were the Marion Patriots. As had happened in the week before the Tigers first play from scrimmage, which was a touchdown, was called back. This time on a motion penalty. The Tigers did however draw first blood in the game but were unable to stop Marion, as the Patriots nipped the Tigers 15-14. The Tigers next opponent was the Charleston Bluejays. The Tigers played an excellent all-around game as they won their first game of the season 14-8. The Tigers hopes for a winning season were shattered in their next game as they lost to the Kennett Indians. The game, which was played in a driving rainstorm, found Kennett ahead at halftime 13-10. The rain in the second half kept both teams from doing much offensively, as Kennett held on to win 13-10. The annual Homecoming game featured the Tigers playing the East Prairie Eagles. The Tigers were in command throughout the game and earned their second victory of the season, 22-14. The last home game of the season pitted the Tigers against the Green Waves of Malden. Malden jumped out to a quick lead, but the Tigers fought back and in the fourth quarter tied the game up at 27. The comeback attempt was thwarted, however as Malden booted a field goal in the last few minutes to win 30-27.The Tigers closed out the season by traveling to New Madrid and taking on the New Madrid County Central Eagles. The Tigers, suspecting an easy game, were surprised by the Eagles play. The Tigers were in the game until the fourth quarter, when New Madrid scored two touchdowns and won going away 20-7. The Caruthersville Tigers finished the 1984 football season with a 2-7 record, but this could have as easily been 7-2 as the Tigers lost a number of hard-fought games that came down to the wire. It seemed that the Tigers never got a break, but they did not give up and gave the fans some exciting games in the 1984 season. Like a King just about to be crowned, each CHS senior registered on August 30, expectant and happy. They were never again to envy the proud seniors - for they had become the proud seniors. Filling the role of a senior class easily, the class of 1985 basked in the limelight. Although Seniors are “privileged characters,” they must assume responsibility with their privileges. After school got well underway, things started popping for seniors. Having senior pictures made, ordering invitations, studying for exams, writing term papers, receiving awards and honors, and getting their caps and gowns - these were only a part of the host of activities and jobs seniors found themselves involved in. Seniors were also doing extra thinking about planning a future. Never regretting their busyness , the seniors realized that the profile of their senior year was one they would not forget. The 1985 senior class had strong leaders, hard workers, excellent students, good athletes and school citizens. As graduates these same people will go on leading, working, studying, training, and providing support for a country, instead of only a high school. 132 THE TWELVE YEAR HABIT BRIDGET KAY AGNEW FHA - 1 yean layout editor of 1985 Cotton Blossom; member of Teens on the Go - 2 years; 1985 Cotton Blossom Candidate; Treasurer of Sophomore homeroom MICHELLE LYNN BENSON FBLA - 2 years; FHA - 1 year, DECA - 2 years DIONE ANNETTE BARNARD MAURICE LATHUARN BERRY Basketball - 3 years; Varsity C-1 year BRENDA SUE BARNETT RaELLA FAYE BEST Band ■ 4 years; Pep Band • 1 yean C.H.S. Next, I want to recognize the members of the School Publications class of 1984-85. They consistently worked on this book, even during the most hectic days of the school year. Editor-in-chief Byron Medlin and Cheryl Williams, who indexed the book, even gave a few days of their summer vacation to complete the book on time. John Karnes, the 1985-86 Cotton Blossom editor, stepped into his duties before it was required and pitched in to help finish this book. I look forward to working with him on next year’s book. Anna Nelson, co-editor-in-chief, recruited talented artist Norma Robinson to design the cover and her work is greatly appreciated. Thanks also goes to Pemiscot Publishing Company, which was always willing to share photographs of school events. Mr. Wade Tipton, local photographer, became like a member of our staff- giving of his evenings and weekends to attend sports events, concerts and dances to take excellent photographs of these events, and his efforts, seen throughout this book, are also greatly appreciated. Les Semar, of Walsworth Publishing Company, made our transition to a brand-new yearbook publisher almost effortless. Thanks again, everyone!
