Cotton Blossom Caruthersville High School Caruthersville, Missouri PSALM OF THE VOID Death is cold and silent, It touches every soul. Its grip is strong, sad its song, And like time is very old. Sadness is its companion, Sorrow is its closest friend. Absence is always present, Even after the end. Nothing can replace the void Left when Death’s call comes. Nothing can bring back the joy, Once had with ones now gone. To ashes and dust they now return, Earth has traded them for these. But they left a gift, and all we have left Are golden memories. Charles David Malin Our Pride and Joy 5 Two happy-go-lucky students pose for the camera. S t e n t 1 1 It's always nice to have someone to talk to. 6 e STUDENT LIFE Among the chatter between classes, the anxiety of waiting for the bell, and cramming for the semester exams, we led two separate lives. One life included riding the loop and braving our way to Brown Shoe Road. Extra-curricular activities bound our free time to school after the final bell. In the other we spent long hours taking notes, reviewing, and studying for tests we dreaded weeks in advance. Thinking ahead as we planned our future was often pushed aside to make way for doing things we enjoyed much more. Lending a helping hand and working together helped us unify. 7 WORKING FOR OUR SCHOOL School Board Mr. James Bruton President Mrs. Jane Betz Mr. James W. Dean Vice President Mr. Julian Boyd Treasurer Dr. Alan Gubin Mr. Robert O. Pierce 10 Administra ti Personnel Mr. Carl Hutchison Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Vea Hooper Mrs. Mary Rollins Mr. Thomas Porter Joe Parkinson Head Man at C.H.5. Anytime you see him, he’s working for our school. Signing excuses, tardy slips, passes . . . what a hand that man has! Daily announcements benefit the students. No job is finished until the paper work is done - does his job ever end? 12 Staff Carries Out the Day-to-Day Functions ofC.H.S. Mrs. Cynthia Porter Mr. Verlon Till Mrs. Pauline Hosier Mr. Cornealious Robinson Mrs. Judy Roberts Mrs. Shelley LaForge FACULTY OF C.H.S, When payday depresses you. JEANNE ALLEN You forget what your first name is because no one ever calls you by it. SANDRA BARNES When you have two-hundred papers to grade and you still assign two-hundred students homework for the next day. BILL ACREY You know you are a teacher when a student says I think I'm learning to think. KATRINA ACREY v- v1- ... ■ You are up to your elbows in chalk dust. MILDRED BASKIN When one of your students excell at or improve a skill. FRED BOYD u You Know You're a Teacher When When the 25th of the month is special. JACKIE COON When the smell of what the girls are cooking is so irresistible that you eat it all up. BUNNY CROWE You know you are a teacher when -when - does one ever know? EDNA CHAFFIN You look up and see one of your students dancing on the table. GERALD CORBIN When someone asks you to do a poster in one day when it really takes a week's work. DOROTHY CLARK When on Saturday you keep thinking about what class or period you’d be in at that certain time. BILL DURHAM 15 Students Begin to Respond A human being with feelings and emotions, contrary to popular belief. CHARLES EVANS When you call a band rehearsal for 7:30 and discover that fifteen students are anxiously waiting for you at 7:15. HEROLD FORD Teaching is a rewarding thing when you know your students want to learn. JOHN GALE Teaching is a wonderful idea. The students keep you eternally youthful. (Just look at me!) BARBARA JAMES The teacher can communicate constructively with the students and help them to become aware of the importance of education and their attitude toward the social structure. HUGH JAMES When students begin to respond to what I try to teach them. MARTHA JOHNSON 16 You Do Homework on Weekends You do homework on weekends -especially on Friday night. PAULA KIRTLEY Your chorus group likes to sing and provide others with good entertainment. PAULINE MASTERS Your best student wants to do more. ROBERT McGRAW When a student says, These problems are really easy once you get the answer. You really know however, when you see the look of understanding after the explanation of a problem and see the satisfactory results of the students' work. ROSE McKILLIP When you’re going home with more homework than your students. ]. Y. MILLER One should always attempt to be part of the solution rather than the problem. NEELY MITCHELL 17 . . Surrendering Gracefully the Things of Youth . . . Take kindly the council of the years, surrendering gracefully the things of youth. DARRYL ROBERTS Your stack of homework is bigger than your students'. JANICE PINION Your students enrolled in journalism tell you they don't like to write or talk to people. RICHARD STORM Not being able to slap someone with a smart mouth. WILLIAM PELTS When your year begins in August and ends in May, instead of beginning in January and ending in December. MARLENE RHODE 18 . . Laughing at Yourself. You find yourself doing homework every night. NATALIE TATE When you're having a conversation with friends and repeat what you say five times in five different ways, all in words no longer than two syllables. SHARON TYLER You wake up in the mornings and put on your double-knits. HARV WELCH Laughing at yourself when you realize that today you weren’t the smartest student in the class. JAMES WILSON 19 YOU KNO W YOU'RE A . . . When you’ve goi it and can flaunt it! Coach Welch From giving lectures in the class to sipping coffee with students after school, CHS faculty lived their job. Perhaps through the experience of sponsoring a dance that almost didn't get finished, maybe through putting a major drama production together without much to work with and knowing you have to raise a certain amount in order to come out all right, maybe the experience of putting the school annual together, hoping and praying all along that nothing goes wrong at the printers' office or with the student's layouts, perhaps by working for months with a group of boys and shaping them into an 8-2 winning team, perhaps by experience we have learned patience and understanding, and how to demonstrate it to one another - teacher to student, student to teacher. 20 TEACHER WHEN. Neely Mitchell 21 FACULTY From Webster's Collegiate Dictionary: Teacher - te-cher n., 1. one that teaches; esp.: one whose occupation is to instruct. Some would tend to limit their understanding of words, such as teacher, to such affixiated ideas as dictionary definitions. As these people go on their passive journeys through their lives, things they come in contact with are fit into their own squares” of knowledge or comprehension. Everything is either one way or the other, there is no in between. It is either good or bad, black or white, and trying to persuade these people to see the gray sometimes infuriates them and triggers an emotional anger coming from insecurity. As Norman O. Bown so aptly put it: ''Literal meanings are packaged commodities for passive consumers. Maybe with a little help from each other we can all begin to try to understand each other better. Let's all try to see the gray. 22 s E N I O R S DONA MORGAN Vice-President LEARA PRATHER Secretary CINDY STEWART Treasurer , ¥ j PAUL ROY PALMER Reporter ROBERT MITCHELL President 26 DAVID M. A late August heat wave and an inoperable air conditioning system compounded the hisery of students and teachers alike. Below: CHS Principal Joe Parkinson confers with student council president Steve Owens (left) and vice-president Tim Ferrell (right). The 1975 edition, the first produced under the guidance of Richard Storm in his capacity as journalism instructor, incorporated several changes in the book, including more advanced layout and a journalistic approach toward the COTTON BLOSSOM’S content. During the week-long floor decoration competition between members of the various classes, the Seniors jumped out to an early lead in the point standings, followed closely by the freshmen, while the sophomores and juniors floundered. After the yell competition, the seniors seemed assured of winning the class spirit award, but, unknown until later, the senior class had been disqualified on a technicality which was never fully understood, and the freshmen won by one point. 109 Each year, the various clubs and organizations at CHS compete in a car decoration competition prior to the annual homecoming parade. Using a variety of materials and a wide range of ideas, the results are usually as diverse as the participants themselves. The only common bond between the competitors was a general effort to present the opponents in that night’s game, the East Prairie Eagles, in as disfavorable a fashion as possible. Band Continues to Improve That CHS band returned to prominence during the 1975-76 school year, thanks largely to the innovations of band director Harold Ford. In addition to altering the band's halftime show, Ford divided the group into two sections, concert and campus bands. Assignment to the groups was based on musical ability. The group performed at halftime during basketball games in addition to participating in several contests, both at the district and state levels. One section of the stage band, the saxaphone quartet, received a superior rating at the state competition for sax ensembles. The stage band music was a blend of contemporary, pop, and big band sounds as compared to the more traditional material performed by the marching and concert bands. J16 The typical day in the life of a CHS student begins early each morning with the incessant ringing of the alarm clock or the ear-shattering scream of your mother to get out of bed - or else. Rather than risk bodily injury, you usually complied, and after a rushed breakfast, found yourself once again at school, waiting for the bell to ring and your so-called education to start anew. However good their intentions, more often than not, it seemed, the so-called entertainment left the audience fidgeting in their seats and counting the minutes until the program would end. During some of the more unforgettable moments, students watched an alleged psychic conduct experiments in ESP, and another guest blow a horn that resembled a bent downspout. Above, righi: David Malin (right) on the trombone and friend prepared for a duet. Only 75 couples attended the event this year, the lowest number in recent memory, and as a result the dance ended with a net deficit. The Journalism Department later sponsored a student-faculty volleyball game to alleviate debts incrued by the dance. The few couples who attended the affair watched as Miss Tammy McCullough was crowned COTTON BLOSSOM queen for 1976. She succeeded Miss Carletta Young in ceremonies during the dance. Tommy Clayton relaxes and enjoys a friendly letter. Student leave campus at the onset of lunch hour. A favorite spot among malingerers was the corridor between the band room and the gym. If all else failed, you could spend lunch with your lady love. After a morning of cramming your cranial cavity with knowledge and other such tiresomeness, there came that time of renewal and rejuvenation known as lunch when one feasted upon such culinary delicacies as the cold bologna sandwich, the hamburger, and that eternal pleasure of the palate - the hotdog. The eating process was usually somewhat hurried, however by the abbreviated lunch period, so that dinner usually resembled one long gulp. (burp) When you returned to school, preferably before the first bell rang, there was always a bevy of things to do, including smoking various substances in your car, loitering, and attempting to sneak past faculty members before the recognized and accepted time to go to your locker. 125 r rD S3 The CHS Drama Department, under the direction of Neely Mitchell, Jr., presented Cheaper by the Dozen, a nostalgic comedy by Frank Gilbreth and Ernestine Gilbreath Carey about the adventures of a large family during the 1920's, and featured Hayden McKaskle and Carla Hutchison in the lead roles. For the second consecutive year, the dance was held in the new gym, presenting numerous difficulties for the planners of the event in construction and decoration of the building, but the end result was generally well received by those who attended. The decorations featured a flowered arch or portal through which each date and her escort passed during the grand march, as well as a lighted fountain, garden and streamers hung from various places around the gym. Moonligh t and Roses 130 Sets Mood for Prom Each year, at the conclusion of the second semester, the various academic departments of CHS in addition to school clubs and organizations hold an honors assembly, during which outstanding achievement and scholarship by students is recognized and rewarded. This year's program was a two-and-a-half hour assembly characterized by marathon lurches to the stage, endless speeches and a seemingly bottomless supply of awards to be handed out. Several CHS students received scholarships among them Don Morris, who accepted an appointment to the United States Military Academy, and Mary Teresa Ceceil who won a Presidential scholarship to Murray State University, marking the third consecutive year a CHS graduate has won a full academic scholarship to that institution. 132 HONOR DAY RECOGNIZES THE INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS OF STUDENTS Above: Cheryl Pendergrass receives a Journalism award for her work on the COTTON BLOSSOM.
