The past four years at Caruthers High School have been very exciting, challenging, rewarding, and sometimes disappointing, but the Class of H79 seemed to have the determination to cope with these things and are now ready to move on leaving behind a very treasured part of their life. BOTTOM RIGHT: Mr. Rothe's fourth period Civics class enthusiastically responded to his lecture. 19 Laurie Helm the honor of This year's 1979 Raiderette was Laurie Helm. Laurie is a friendly, outgoing person, with many athletic and scholastic abilities. She was Class President her Freshman and Sophomore year. Her Junior year Laurie was Student Council First Vice-President followed by her Senior year as Student Body President. Athletically, Laurie played Volleyball on the HC Team her Freshman year, and played Varsity her last three years. She participated in Girls Varsity Basketball all four years at CUHS. Laurie also played a year of J.V. Tennis her Sophomore year. Laurie belonged to Block C her Sophomore through Senior year. She was a member of CSF her Sophomore and Junior year and served the organization as the Historian Reporter her Sophomore year. She was also a member of the Pep Club her Senior year. lVls. Helm was nominated Christmas Queen Candidate and Carnival Queen Candidate in her Sophomore year. As a Junior, Laurie was appointed Prom Chairman and she was responsible for the planning and organizing of the 1978 Prom. Laurie loves the outdoors and has taken up photography as a hobby. If you are ever looking for a warm heart and friendly smile look for Laurie Helm. 20 was awarded Raiderette. The 1979 Raider was David Wineman. David has many outstanding qualities. He is intelligent, well liked and has been a leader in many school activities. David was honored as David was the Junior and Senior Class President and class Sergeant- at-arms his Freshman year. He was in CSF his Sophomore year, became Vice-President his Junior year, and was President his Senior year. David was a member of FBLA, FHA, and Student Council his Senior year. He was in band all four years and became Vice-President his Junior year and President his Senior year. David particpated in Basketball all four years of High Schoool. He was on the Freshman Basketball team his Freshman year, J.V. Basketball team his Sophomore year, and on the Varsity Basketball team his Junior and Senior year. This entitled him to be in Lettermen's Club his Junior and Senior year. He then became Vice-President of Lettermen's Club his Senior year. Considering David's many achievements you can see why he was chosen 1979 Raider. Congratulations David. The Juniors could always be heard at the rallies yelling their hearts out. During Homecoming the Juniors entered a float and placed first with the candidate's car. lVlembers ofthe class worked hard in the concession stands at the football and basketball games. The money earned helped the Juniors sponsor the Junior-Senior Prom which was held in the spring. Student Council honored the Freshmen by giving them a Hello Dance at the beginning of the year. Also at the beginning of the year they ordered their class rings and chose from various styles: The rings arrived in February, Throughout the year the Class of '82 showed excellent spirit at the rallies. Raiders dominated in '78. The annual 1978 Homecoming Week started with Spirit Week. Spirit Week began with Monday, Blue and White day, Tuesday, Celebrity day, Wednesday, Unknown Comic day, and Thursday, 50's day. On Thursday, a rally was held with alot of spirit and when the students gathered downtown for the annual Homecoming Parade. All clubs and classes participated in the parade. The floats were judged during the parade and were announced during the Varsity half-time. The Seniors received first place in the class Hoat division and the Juniors received first place in the class car division. FBLA also received hrst place in the organization division. First round Play Offs the Raiders were victorious over the Parlier Panthers by a score of 74-58. In the second round Play Offs against the Roosevelt Roughriders the team played with aggression and determination and led the hrst three quarters of the game, but fell behind in the last quarter. The final score was 73-58. In the past Caruthers has had an outstanding wrestling team. The 1978-79 team was no exception. The Varsity was undefeated in league with a 4-O record. This year Caruthers qualified more wrestlers for the Divisional Meet than ever before. At Divisional Don Cortez placed lirst, while Mike Loftis and Armando Vera each placed third in their weight classes. This qualified them to go to the Valley Meet. At Valley Armando Vera and Mike Loftis both came home with a fifth place linish. The wrestlers that completed the season with the best dual match record were: Don Cortez with 23 wins 4 losses and 1 tie, Armando Vera with 22 wins and 5 losses, and Mike Loftis with 21 wins and 5 losses. Joe Flores, the All-league selection from Fowler in 1978, was an important addition to the team. The team also had eight players come up to the Varsity team from last year's championship J.V. team.
