The highlight for the Raider Band this year was the Class E First Place Trophy won at the Central California Band Review at Merced. Besides this honor, they captured a third place trophy at the Fowler Harvest Festival surpassed only by Tran- quillity and McLane of Fresno. January marked the honor band performance in which Sharon Brewer participated. The senior members of the band along with those of the choir participated in a musical program at the University of Pacific in Stockton the first week in February. Uzis is the Kc I af thc' Hand MAJORETTES Sandra Dildine Kathleen Watanabe Janie Martinusen Karen Alves DRUM MAJORETTE Sharon Brewer The majorettes have helped to keep up the promotion of school spirit by having formed human archways for our mighty Raiders to parade through onto the field. They also exercised many of their intricate routines to music played by our swinging Raider Band at football half-times. All in all the four majorettes this year have shown such coordination and were so synchronized that they deserve recognition as having done such. While the majorettes deserve praise for their versatility at handling a baton, the drum major- ette also deserves praise for her handling of the four foot baton which leads the Raider Band in parades. Her baton has signaled the start of the 36th Annual Caruthers District Fair and symbo- lized the precision performance of the band in the Central California Band Review at Merced. Where precision marching really counts in parade competition is with the letter carriers. This is why these girls went through hours of intensive drilling. They created a marvelous impres- sion on the judges and spectators in Merced because of their unique appearance. This year, these girls have done such a great job that they also deserve high praise. The C. U. H. S. Special Choir has been a very busy group indeed. As you may remember, the choir was quite fortunate to have obtained blue blazers for their public appear- ances last year due to the partial help of the Caruthers Boosters Club. This year their main objective has been to try to earn money to complete paying for them. To help do this they co-sponsored in March an evening talent show that was open to the public. Special Choir and Sophomore class reaped the bene- fits of the show and also struggled through the headaches of its organiza- tion. The choir also sold blue shortsleav- ed sweatshirts with white Raider em- blems during December and January. The seniors in the group were eli- gible for the annual choral get together at the University of Pacific in February This has been one of the Special Choir's more active years, and it has done much to promote school spirit and to make the Caruthers name shine. The faculty of 1966 made one of the best showings ever presented with the group working as one smooth and coordinated body, Mr, Jeffris, high-point man, was really in the groove and made sixteen points, The JV's really were given a run for their money and were defeated by our physically fit teachers by the score of 52-47, The Varsity vs, Alumni game was next on the agenda. While there were only six alumni to the eight varsity players, the varsity trailed them throughout the game as the alumni seemed tireless and their shooting arms unable to miss the basket. With a cast of fifteen the play proceeded to show a contemporary family's internal quarrels, love affairs, and individual friends. While providing laughs for the audience, the play comes to a head when a battle royal is fought. The play comes to a happy ending when the Littles find their true and deep feelings for each other, With such a large cast, finding rehear- sal times which suited everyone was some- thing of a problem, In addition a flu epi- demic hit the school, causing members of the cast to miss rehearsals. Due to these factors the play was postponed from March 18 to March 25. A matinee was given for the surround- ing elementary schools on March 24, An estimated audience of five htuidred filled the gym on Friday evening, March 25, for the evening performance. There have been numerous changes in the La Puerta among them added pages, more snaps, added coverage of the clubs, and a sixteen page summer supplement. The summer supplement will include those sports which are not found in the following section, such as baseball, track, tennis, Junior and Senior Prom, Graduation and many other activities of the latter part of the school year. Editing Is Fun Being the editor of the La Puerta has been fun, but it has also caused headaches ...... a tie for Raider which remained a tie until after the third ballot, disputes over the dedication until the untimely death of Jimmy Johnston brought the staff to unanimous agreement, working frantically on deadline days, sending photographers out to take pictures of local merchants and having them bring back pictures of houses, and trying to talk Mr. Palmer out of writing his poem, which has appeared for the last two years on the last page, Thanks To Staff I would like to thank ..... Norrine Ransom for listening to all my problems, Goldie Hansford for all the last minute art- work she did, Mary Bankston for all the last minute copy she wrote, my staff for doing a great job, all the people who pro- vided for the yearbook, Mr. John Maxwell who took most of the photos in this yearbook, Mae Lynn Studios for the fair photos, the faculty for their patience on picture taking and deadline days, to Mr. Bush, my teacher eighth period, when I was late, the office staff who put up with the staff on deadline days, Barry Crow, our yearbook representative, Who was always at our disposal, Jim Ruhl, yearbook repre- sentative Quntil a car accident caused his hospitalization, who taught me the steps of yearbook preparation, Fred Jaso for his management of the business end of the yearbook, so he says, and a very special thanks to you, the student body. Though they did not capture the league title they did capture a second place trophy at the Coalinga College Tournament held December 27, 28 and 29, They lost in the championship game to Central by a score of 54 to 66. The team scored a total of 857 points to their opponents 866 points. The Raiders averaged 61.2 points per game while their opponents scored an average of 61 , 85 points.
