' FORGWORO As the years go by and the events which we have looked forward to become events of the past, we slowly turn back the pages of time as we look through the La Puerta. Turn slowly, lest you forget the many friends you made and the m any joys and sorrows which you experienced. And let us never forget that these are the Fruits of our Harvest. Mr. Holly Miller We, the students of the Caruthers Union High School, respectfully dedicate the 1955-56 La Puerta to Mr. Holly Miller, who has been a custodian at C. U, H. S, since 1952. Mr. Miller was born in Silver City, New Mexico on September 13, 1905. He attended school in Arizona but moved to California in 1929. Besides his duties at the school, he maintains a ranch here in the Caruthers district. To you, Mr. Miller, we dedicate the 1955-56 La Puerta because of your un-tiring help in the activities above and beyond your regular duties. TRUSTEES MR, KLEPPER Superintendent: MR. ANDERSON MR. HANSEN. MR. TURMIRE Superintendent ' s Message: The graduating class of 1955 and 1956 has the honor of being the first graduating class from the New CARUTHERS UNION HIGH SCHOOL. The Class indeed has reaped a bounti- ful harvest. Several members of the class have received scholarships, honors, and awards. Examples of the outstanding awards are as follows: Kirby Hansen has received the principal appointment to Annapolis due to his outstanding scholastic achievement. This has been the first time that a student of this school has received such an outstanding honor. Ronald Uhles, another member of this graduating class, recently in competition with all Agricul- tural Students in California made a per- fect score on the Agriculture co-op test, which is the first time this has been accomplished in California. Many other graduates are likewise receiving great honors, as will be noted while viewing this annual. Congratulations are in order to this outstanding graduating class and to the teachers and administration who have guided so successfully this class to graduation. HARRY R. ANDERSON District Superintendent of Schools MR. PACKER MR. COX --.-V-. ' SECRETARY Doris Kazmir ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR Mr. Rose We are just completing the first school year in our new high school. Anytime we talk about school, our attention is focused upon the importance of a real education. What will the harvest from this education be? This is one investment that we can nnake which neither dissipation nor revolution can take away from us. Times may change but an efficient education can be used by e ' ery one to support himself, or herself, no matter what changes may occur in the conditions of the country. To the seniors, may the fruits of your harvest from your High School training soon be within your grasp. To the undergraduate students, may you continue your invest- ment in education until you can enjoy the harvest of a happy self-supporting life. Our first stop in Caruthers was at the Caruthers Chinese Theater. To our surprise, we met our old friend Darrell Dondit. Darrell had been Student Body President during our Senior year at Caruthers High. He told us that he was now the Manager and Owner of the Caruthers Chinese Theater. The first feature was about to begin so we excused ourselves from Darrall and entered the auditorium. As we entered, we happened to trip over the feet of Sidney Ward. He told us he had a kink in his neck so he had to sit side -ways in his chair to see the movie. We talked to Sid for a while and then our usherettes happened by. To our surprise they were Nancy Tovmsend and Shirley Johnson. We talked to them for a while and then they escorted us to our seats. Then the movie began. It was a technicolor feature by the name of Raider Alley After Dark. It was an exciting murder mystery and to our surprise, we noticed that Edward Aguirre was the main actor. Co-starring with him were Delores Hager and Bernice Cox. These three actors were given Raider Awards for their excellent performances in the picture. During the picture we got a yen for a bag of delicious, hot popcorn, so we headed toward the refreshment stand. There we met Joyce Percy. Since Joyce had been the star popcorn maker for our class when we were Juniors, she was in great demand by all the theaters. She told us that she and Shirley Estes were starting a popcorn company by the name of Percy-Estes Corn Company. After the movie, we left the theater and were strolling down the street when we happened to meet Oma Bell Jahnson. She was a private secretary for Bob Saling Mathematics Inc. Oma Bell had typed at a speed of 365 words a second when she was in high school and she was now on the Caruthers Olympic Typing Team. She told us that Bob had gone into the field of teaching mathematics and was now teaching Mr. Zimkowski a few simple problems in Trigonometry. We left Oma Bell, climbed into our jet-mobil, and headed toward one of the laboratories that had been built in Caruthers. To our surprise, we noticed that the name was Hansens ' Laboratories. This was where Kirby was trying to produce a chewing gum which would not tire your jaws. After we toured the laboratory, we left and headed toward the community gymnasium. We had heard that two of the most famous basketball teams in the universe were going to play against each other. The teams names were the Globe Clobbers and the Rod Heads. The Globe Clobbers were coached by Mary Alice Beatty. Mary Alice had been nick-named Sharp-shooter Mary by her team. The team consisted of 7 ' 5 Bill East (alias Shorty), Bob Griffin. Bill Phillips, George Robinson, Charles Miguel, Eldon Crawford, and Carmen Ortiz. Carmen had been chosen Woman Athlete of the Year by sport writers across the nation. The Rod Heads were coached by Leo Wallace. Leo had been a great athlete before he became the coach. He had been the star track man for Caruthers High, running the 440 in one second flat. His team consisted of Goldie Williams, Ina Edliind, Barbara Hick s, and Dwight Johnson. Dwight was their star center. It happened that the referrees at that basketball game were Johnny Johnston and David Barber. After the game, we hurried to catch the last performance of the Dancing Dollies from Mars. •■ We found out that the Dancing Dollies were none othere than Betty Osterhoudt, Evelyn Niel, Teresa Ransom, and Elizabeth Lacy. These four girls had competed in a dancing contest to see which one would get the leading part. Since they all tied for first place, they decided to form a dancing team. Now, they are universally knovm. While we were in Caruthers, we stopped by the Caruthers Opera House. We were very lucky that day because we just got in to see Madam Raiderette. Madam Raiderette happened to be Lionor Lugo. Her co -actor was Bart Crimm. Bart had a solo all to himself in the second act but since he had had a stroke of laryngitis, he had to let Lionor do it. It wasn ' t very effective. After the opera we decided to have something to eat, so we headed toward Jerry Hayes ' Restaurant. We had heard that Jerry served the best food in town. His waitresses, to our surprise, were Rochelle Leavelle, Phyllis Chappa, Margie Glasgow and Ida Sue Cleveland. These girls weren ' t ordinary waitresses, they sang and danced as they served the food. At times it got pretty messy. Later, we decided to visit one of the prize ranches that was known all over the world. The name of the ranch was the Uhles Grape Farm. The name sounded familiar and to our surprise we found out that it was owned by our old friend Ronald Uhles. He told us that he had gone into the grape business when he heard that Ben Farmer was selling his looo acre farm. So he decided to sell his farm to Ronald and settle down v iere he could have more room to move around. We talked to Ronald for a while and we discovered some very interesting facts. We found out Henry Rotea had become President of the Raider Alley-Cats. The Alley-Cats were of fine social standing in the community. We found out that John Woods was teaching Physics at Mars University in Mars. We learned that Billie Ransom, Shirley Jones, and Jean Lawrence had organized a singing trio and were now touring the universe in order to raise money to retire. We left Ronald and headed toward nowhere in particular. All of a sudden there was a clanking in our jet engine and we headed toward the nearest space garage. We talked to the tow mechanics for a while before we found out that they were Barbara Jones and Mary Ray. At first we couldn ' t tell who they were under all that grease and oil. We talked to them a while and they told us to be back in about an hour to pick up our jet. We left the garage and headed toward the community swimming pool. It was a surprise to find out that Edward Moser was the life guard. He had developed so many more muscles that we hardly recognized him. While we were there, a contest was on the verge of beginning. This contest was to see who could stay under water the longest. Some of the late entries were John Patakas, Wayne Miller, and Norma Moore. It ttirned out that Norma won the contest staying under water for 3 hourj. This was pretty long but it didn ' t break the national record of 3 hours and I second held by Great Harry Matidal. After that, we- left the pool and headed back to the garage. Along the way we met Ben Salud and Arthur Riley. They told us that they were jet pilots working for the Trans Universal Jet Lines. After talking to Art and Ben for a while, we left and picked up our jet. It was getting late and it was time to return to our space station. Because without them this book would not have been possible. It ' s true that at times we all got in each others hair but, as a whole, I think that we behaved our- selves well. At times we gave Mr. Zepezauer a pretty bad time. Again, I want to say that my staff did their jobs exceptionally well and you should thank them for this book. As you go along looking through the pages, give some thought to the people who worried about meeting the deadlines and who worked hard trying to get their assigned copy forms finished.
