WM amMMi .sssajt X h. ■i ■i ' M ' ' . 1 Mr. Turnmire, Mr. Cox, Mr. Packer, Mr. Hansen, Mr. Klepper SUPERINTENDENT ' S MESSAGE This Annual has been dedicated to Private Jack Kelso, a United States Marine, who was award- ed the Congressional Medal of Honor, post- humously, for gallantry in action in Korea. Private Jack Kelso was a former student here at Caruthers Union High School, and it was my pleasure to have been Jack ' s teacher and coun- selor at various times during his schooling here. Private Kelso was a good student in school, but felt that he had a greater duty to perform for his country. This duty was carried out by the courage Private Kelso displayed on the battle- field in Korea. Private Kelso received the United States highest awards, the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Silver Star, and the Purple Heart. It is gratifying to know that our Annual staff and their advisor were very conscious of the greatness performed by Private Kelso to his country and his fellow classmates, and that the dedication was made to Private Kelso. May his greatness never be forgotten by his many friends. Mr. Anderson

The marks of an educated man or woman have often been described, but they elude exact defi- nition. No diploma can enforce credentials that the graduate himself fails to demonstrate by his manners, his conversation, and his readiness. No lack of a diploma can prevent ultimate recognition of the person who has the real es- sentials which school has tried to impart. Hence it is always with a certain modest dis- claimer that a school administrator bides God- speed to a graduating class. Nobody can realize better than your principal how much might have been done for you, and in how many ways we have fallen short of our ideal of helpfulness to all students. Our age has been criticised for materialism , immaturity and anti-intellectual bias . These are not the marks of Caruthers alumni of my acquaintance. My conviction, rather, grows stronger each year, that maturity and respect for the ennobling things of life characterize the spirit of the Caruthers tradition. To that enduring and transforming spirit I com- mend your loyalty, knowing that it will grow steadily stronger and more significant through- out your lives.
