CLASS OF I95I At last the Class of 1951 have reached the end of their high school career and are about to open the doors to higher education and opportunities of the outside world. As we look back into the pages of our high school days, we recall such happy events as the junior-Senior Prom in june, our Ditch Day, the Dress-up-days packed with laughs, and our senior snow parties. We owe a great deal of our success to our wonderful advisors, Mrs. Lois Anderson and Mr. Edward Trainer, who have stood by us throughout the years. Now, as we are about to graduate, we wish to bid farewell to Caruthers and to wish all the classes that follow, the best of luck to them in their Senior years. They got the traditional initiation of lipstick and looked like regular redskins for several days. After receiving their Welcome Party from the sophomores, the class launched on their active career by returning the favor. Class officers for that year were: Grace Masterson, President, Vernin Petrey, Vice Presi- dent, Colleene Pouncey, Secretary, and Margie McCormick, Treasurer. The class was guided and directed by the Advisors, Miss Betty Tietz and Mr. Wilbur TeSelle. The membership had reduced to fifty or more persons when school re-convened in the fall of 1948. Some had moved away, others married or dropped school to work. jerry Tiller was Presidentg Wayne Davis, Vice President, johnny Bartlett, Secretary, and Delia Hall, Treasurer during 1948-49. A Shamrock Swing was sponsored in March, 1949, and various other activities were conducted. Mrs. H. Anderson, Mr. Link Anderson, and Mr. E. Trainer were new Advisors for the year. The class was still smaller the following year for still more students had left the company. That was their junior year-and what a busy one it was! Like all juniors, they had to prepare to sponsor the junior-Senior Prom. A concessions booth was set up at the annual Caruthers Fair and pop corn, peanuts, and soft drinks were sold. Amateur barkers could be heard almost any time during the three days, building up and supporting the quality of Junior Class Products. A queen contest was sponsored, the winner to reign over the dedication of the new gymnasium. A candidate entered from each class. Rainbows was the theme chosen for the Prom and the date was set for May 26, 1950. The class as a whole immediately jumped to the task of planning and decorating the gym for the event. Crepe paper, ballons and a large rainbow ending in a pot of gold completely covered the half of the building. Class officers were: President, Lila Loveg Vice President, jerry Tiller, Secretary, Mary Ann From, Treasurer, Margaret Reed. Finally, in September, 1950, the class entered the doors of C.U.I-LS. as seniors. Several more old members were gone and a few new faces added. The number stood at forty-two. Officers were elected at the first class meeting. They were: Treasurer, Charles Scott, Secretary, Walter Lock, Vice President, Marian Becker, President, Lila Love. Most of the year the students were occupied with individual responsibilities but they did get together to sponsor a semi-formal Christmas dance. Now, at last, the class of 1951 has reached its goal. Thirty-five students are crossing the stage to receive their diplomas and go their separate ways to greater achievements. Some of the students will continue their educations in colleges or universities, others will begin to work immediately in stores, offices, or on farms. More, especially the fellows, will he joining the armed services and going to the defense of our country. All, regardless of occupation, will retain the memories of work accomplished and sad and happy hours spent at C.U.H.S. JUNIORS 3 15 1? if I lx A X CLASS OFFICERS-L. Chapman, Presidentg H. Lane, ADVISOR5-W. Rowley, D. Loyeridge, J. Ritchey Treasurerg D. Beck, Vice President. The junior Class was off to a good start this year, by sponsoring a junior Booth at the Caruthers District Fair. The juniors sold candy, pop, and popcorn at the games as another means of raising IUODCY. One of the largest projects the juniors attempted, was sponsoring the contest for Basketball Queen. The profits made from these activities were used for the annual junior-Senior Prom and to pay for yearbook pages. They were guided and directed through the year by Mr. Rowley, Miss Loveridge, and Mr. Ritchey, acting as advisors. B. Gattenby, Student Council Rep.g S. Harris, Secre- tary Prom Committeeg M. After two years at Caruthers High the sophomores are still looking forward to next year when they will be one more step toward their goal. In their freshman year they were lost, looking admiringly at their upperclassmen. That is, they were looking forward to being sophomores at least so they could sweep down upon the next class of freshmen with a torturous initiation. Now, in their second year, as sophisticated sophomores, they got off to a fine start by putting on the annual freshman-sophomore dance. The dance was a big success, and also revealed the social ability of the sophomore class. They have also entered into all the sports and won several places. Naturally the sophomores are looking forward to becoming pretty juniors, and then high and mighty seniors. 4' f N ii f X 'W . l 5 ?,,,g,! e .J : w W...-K be freed r. ,gr V j'j1,,r'R 'ii 2 E I tti f i K. fi g igs: Qfifif i 0 ...eg S ,fag ,era S fa ee,rr H5 1 time RALLY and SOCIAL COMMITTEES and STU- Dena Cline DENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE-Front row: Yell Leader N. On September 18, 1950, one hundred and seven slightly confused and bewildered students started their four years' career at Caruthers. For the first week, their charming countenances glowed either from lipstick or from blushing. The freshmen soon proved that they could be a success socially. They were well behaved guests at the Welcome Dance staged by the sophomores and equally well polished hosts at the Halloween Dance which they put on for the student body. The freshmen proved early in the year that they can balance the budget. They made money by winning on their float entry in the Caruthers Fair, by selling cakes, and by giving a dance. At the end of the year they bought a gift for the school. RALLY and SOCIAL COMMITTEES and STU- R. Benegar, J. McConnell DENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE-Front row: Yell L-wdm B. Reddell, E. Ball, B. HOME ARTS Home Arts and Crafts was a new organization in school this year. The girls who joined the groucp learned how to mold and paint ceramics. They also gained much valuable knowle ge concerning colors and color combinations. The little figurines made nice gifts or decorations for the home. The Girls' League had their annual Christmas party December 21. There was a carnival and a banquet. The freshman girls prepared the meal. A large number, about twenty, boys went out for Cross Country, but the number dwindled down to only ten. They have had meets with Laton, Hanford, Bakersfield and Coalinga. As a reward for their excellent showings, Mr. Cook took them to Los Angeles for a meet, in which they competed widm many schools. Our team tied Bakersfield this year which proves good skill because Bakersfield had about twenty runners. Next year the prospects are for an even better year than this one. Cross Country will be considered a major sport in the Sierra League. It will be run during the half-times at football games. The Coalinga meet in March determined the Shasta League championship. , I of i ...Q--u aa , ' E 5 i if .F Qi . sw, M .37 . 4, Manager, Robert Waggoner Captain, Ruben Lugo Coach, Ink Cwk 1 BA KETBALL This speedy little team came out for the 50-51 season with twenty-two players. Four failed to stay the season through. Bowen, Gonzales, Norton and Braga made star showings in defense and offense. Half of the group earned award points for Varsity C membership. Always present earliest in the evenings performances, the team drew a large crowd for every event because the fans liked their good clean games and precision teamwork. The first string will make a winning B team for the 51-52 season while the remainder of the group will be on the C court again better than ever. li 13 B 20 14 Kneeling: D. Lacy, D. Poole, T. Top honors went to forward Dick Beck and center Charlie Cox, who divided high points for goals throughout the year. The B's will lose only four men for next year, so the outlook is encouraging. Also with several players from the C team coming up, and Coach Speight with this year's experience to his credit, next year should find Caruthers High possessing a real basketball team of winners.
