MANSHORTAGE SENIORS AT PROM SPORTS? ,Snnia ...flau,n!.Zf At last we, the class of 45 , are finishing our last year at Caruthers High. Much as We have wished for this day, it's coming brings us sorrow as well as joy. As Freshmen, we entered Caruthers 91 strong and after the first day we were 91 red Indians. Ignoring this grease paint we elected Harold Lawrence, presi- dent: Calvin Wise, vice president: Marie Stark, secretary, and Geraldine Graves, treasurer. During our Sophomore year we made Indians out of all the Freshmen we could catch the first two days. Then we elected Calvin Wise, presidentp Charles Wag- goner, vice-president: Wanda Brock, secretary, and Harold Beck, treasurer. As Iuniors we elected Charles Waggoner, president: Eddie Garcia, vice-presi- dent: Wanda Brock, secretary, and Melva Dildine, treasurer. The high points of this year were the Iunior program on dress-up day and the Iunior-Senior prom. Beginning our Senior year we elected William Ripley, vice-presidentg Geraldine Graves, secretary, and Charles Waggoner, treasurer. When Charles joined the Merchant Marine, we elected Margaret Ramey as his successor. ' The Senior class has taken part in many school ac- tivities and has sponsored several of them. Different members of the class have taken part in different activities such as sports, the Band, and the Cadet Company. Everyone took part in sports, but the out- standing ones were Harold Beck, Lawrence Kahn, Eddie Garcia, Charles Waggoner, and Roy Harris for the boys. The outstanding girls were Tiny Miller, Mar- garet Ramey, Eleanor Dostinich, and Sally Aguirre. In the Band we have Rollin Swacker, lack Camp- bell, Ben From, Charles Fink, Eddie Garcia, Roy Harris, and Melva Dildine, The Senior members of the Cadet Company are Ben From, William Ripley, Roy Harris, Eddie Garcia, and Henry Wise. These boys are pioneers in this field because this is the first year there has been a Cadet Company in Caruthers High. The Senior class also presented a Senior play which was the first presented in several years. It was given under the direction of Miss Wall on Iune l. The Iunior class entertained us at a Iunior-Senior prom on Iune 8. When we graduate from high school this summer, we will have realized our greatest ambition up to this time. But we will owe much of our success to the teachers and advisors who have helped us when we needed help, advised us when we needed advice, and admonished us when we got too uppity. With this thought of gratefulness in our hearts, we leave Caruthers High to seek our places in the world, or to go on to places of higher learning. president: Dorothy Printz, OFFICERS. Although the war has hampered our normal progress, we have done the utmost to bring back some of the old tradi- tions and annual activities that seemed to have been forgotten in the past few years. We organized the class by electing the following officers: President, Paul Hansong vice-president, Ray Whitey secretary, Bernice Engle: treasurer, Irene Coen. On March thirteenth, we invited the Seniors to participate in a dress-up day. There were some very clever costumes and everyone had a good time. We pre- sented the annual lunior Class Play, entitled Professor, How Could You? , a lively threeoct comedy to provide funds for our lunior-Senior Prom. On April eleventh, We sponsored an assembly for the enjoyment of the student body, which was participated in by some of our most talented Iuniors. In sports, we were well represented by several star Varsity and Block C letter- men. The luniors represented a fair share of the athletes in all the different sport fields. And it is believed that we will play a great part in the winning of the leagues next year. Our lunior girls held down their part of the sporting front by winning the inter-class volleyball championship. By ordering our class rings in the latter part of our Sophomore year, we were able to receive them early this year. This plan turned out to be very successful and everybody seemed well pleased with their rings. Pat Quist and Gene Reno were the lunior representatives in the C.S.l:'. The Iuniors were hosts to the Seniors at the prom on the eighth of Iune, thus ending an active year. l l n-Q COMMITTEEMEN. Back row, left to right: O. Lis ey social, L. Wininger, rally. Front row: I. Our first activity was the initiation oi the Freshmen. Nothing rash, just a little lipstick smeared in the right places. At our first class meeting we elected our officers and committee members. They were elected as follows: President, Bill Righettig vice-president, Lloyd Ray: secretary, Frances Pitts: treasurer, Marguerite San Sebastian: com- mitteemen, Robert Iocoy, Rosemary Thomason, lim Baltazar, Louise Ramey, and Donald Ripley. We also planned the Freshman party which was given near Hal- lowe'en so we used Hallowe'en decorations and games. The two classes being so large, the Grammar School auditorium had to be used. Refreshments, consist- ing of apple cider and doughnuts, were served. We can truly say it Was a com- plete success. Football season saw a grand turnout oi Sophomore players. Members on the C teams were: Robert Iocoy, lim Baltazar, Don Ripley and Gail Motheral. On the B team: Bill Righetti, Lorin Short, Tommy Ethridge, Richard Norton, Clarence Harris and Francis Correia. Only one Sophomore made the A team and that was Albert Khan. Sophomores contributed largely to basketball and baseball also. Packer, Loretta Ethrldge CMM' On October 2, 1945, seventy-two Freshmen enrolled at Caruthers High. We felt very big at the idea of being high school students, but soon changed our minds when the Sophomores smeared us up with lipstick. We entered the classroom and started our first day of high school, that is, those who found their rooms. We caught on quickly and were soon going about the regular routine of school. We studied hard and soon had the Seniors amazed at our intelligence. At our first class meeting under the leadership of Mt. Ritchey, our advisor, we elected our class officers as follows: President, Norman McTeer: vice-president, Bill Naborsp secretary, Ioann McClain: treasurer, Edward Ehoffp committeernen, Sally Tiller, Alfred Haggard, Marilyn Packer, Mary Ruth McCormick, Bob Bier, Loretta Ethridge. We were entertained by the Sophomores at the Freshmen-Sophomore party under the leadership of Ioyce Mclntire. We were told a spooky ghost story and sent through a dark room filled with spiders, and numerous other things. The Sophomores topped off the evening by serving refreshments. A few of the Fresh- men boys played football enough to win their letter. In basketball the C team is almost entirely Freshmen, and others play A and B class basketball. The Fresh- men girls also made a good showing in sports such as volleyball and basketball. In the future years we Freshmen plan to carry out our work as successfully as possible. We are striving to make our school and class better than any other one. Hrxs Mr. Hylton enrolled? Are you HGDPY, Couch? Neat shoeloces, lfvf rylmrly roody? Our ussislrrnt baseball coorh. A-hem!! It has participated frequently in assemblies, and its help has been greatly appreciated. The main feature of the year in which the Band took part was the fourth annual Bandjorie. The theme carried forth in the Bandjorie was that of fairy tales. Many selections were played by the Band, both marches and overtures. Several special numbers were also presented by various members of the band. The persons who have rated as the best first stand players are as follows: Iack Campbell, trumpet: Melva Dildine, clarinet, Harvey Iaclcson, drums: Harold McCarter, baritone, and Rollin Swacker, trombone. A new section has been formed as a part of the Band. This special qroup is a Swinq Band. Under the able leadership of Mr. Ritchey, it has proved to be quite a success. V --1-,. Hanson, H. The orchestra has a membership of twenty-eight stu- dents. lt has performed for many assemblies but its main performance was given during the Bandjorie. lt was rather handicapped with having so few string instru- ments, but Mr. Ritchey again helped them come through the worst spots by playing his violin. The lunior and Senior classes wish to express their thanks to the orchestra for its willingness and helpfulness in playing for the Iunior and Senior plays. The mixed chorus has also participated in several programs. Quinter Lislcey, the only male singer in the chorus, deserves a vote of thanks for supporting the bass section. A special trio from chorus has sung on many occasions. The three girls in this trio were Lucille Amorino, Kathryn Hammond, and leanne Spaulding. Sitting: P. Ouist Standing: Q. Liskey l. The Blue Baiders captured the Sierra League title, winning six out of seven games. Iackson proved to be unstoppable with his hard-hitting line plunging. Captain Beck, with his shifty, broken field running, showed much ability also. The Beck to Khan, combination provided for many of the touchdowns, with Beck throwing them and Khan pulling them out of the air with his fancy snagging. Much credit is due to our fine coach who guided us through a suc- cessful season. The middleweight squad placed third in league standings, winning four games and los- ing three. White performed notably at end and accounted for many of the touchdowns. The lightweights failed to take a game as they lost six and tied one. Handicapped by the lack of a gym, the Ca- ruthers heavyweight, middleweight and light- weight squads placed fifth, fifth and fourth, respectively. Competing against the six other schools in the Sierra League, the Blue Raiders ran up against some exceptionally strong com- petition. Led by Captain Khan and Forwards Beck and Garcia, fast-breaking forwards, the heavyweights at times appeared very flashy. Our middleweight team played many hard and exciting games. Harris and Captain Rod- riguez played fine ball and accounted for many of the points for the quintet. Fry also performed notably at guard. After a dismal football :season the lightweights blossomed out and played fine basketball. Hag- gard, oenter, and Captain Reno and McTeer, for- wards, starred for the Little Raiders. In the many different events at the meets rnany indie vidual stars have been uncovered and every one has derived a great deal from this sport. Mr. Ritchey has tutored the boys well and deserves high commendations for his work. Not having much of his type of sport for the last three years due to discontinuation of interschool sports the boys were handicapped since they had not had experience necessary in this sport. Many exciting races have been run by our track team and the competitive spirit of the school has been heightened considerably by the participation in these meets. L. Khan, D. Rodriguez, R. Norton, H. Tennis being an all-year sport, saw Mrs. Edmon- son coaching the team from mid-October until May. A school tennis team was chosen by a series of tournaments in which anyone was entitled to play. One tournament was held with Washington Union High School. Caruthers made an excellent showing in this tournament, by Winning four out of five games. Washington won the girl's doubles. The steady improvement of our sophomore and iunior players brightens the outlook for next year in spite of the loss of the senior stars. Thanks to Mrs. Edmonson for her work with the tennis team. 3 IV I Nl M I N G Yes, perhaps you will see our favorite girl's long tresses hanging uncurled down her back and wonder what has happened. Probably she has just been in the pool for the opening of the swimming season. However, the swimming pool on the day these pictures were taken could not in any sense have been considered a miniature substitute for Shaver Lake. It lacked the mar- velous, wooded surroundings and the pleasant shade: in- stead it offered to students desiring to soar through the air with the greatest of ease, definite and concrete difficulties. We can only hope that when the season opens for these capable aquatic stars, there will be water in the pool. Back row, left to right: l. Coen, M. Packer, R. Markarian, M Dildine, G. Andris.
