A 'Sf Of Study Commercial Shorthand Bookkeeping General Ari' Homemaking 1 w ,Q Trustees When Caruthers l-ligh School first opened there wos only one course of studyee college-preparatory. At the present time our board of trustees is providing for four courses-agricultural, commercial, college-preparatory, and general grqduation. The agricultural course is for boys only. lt prepares them for farming and the proper care of livestock. Shop and agriculture are the required subjects. As its name sug- gests, the college-preparatory course prepares for entrance to college. Included in this course are foreign language, mathematics, and science. Training in the commercial course of study includes a study of business principles, bookkeeping, typewriting and shorthand. The general graduation course is taken by pupils who do not plan to attend any higher institutions and do not care to specialize in voca- tional work. English, history, and physical educotion are required in all four courses. ln former years new subjects were added to the curriculum from time to time. None have been added the last few yeors, however, lt has been rumored recently that the board might consider introducing a shop course for girls and a home eco- nomics class for boys. Left to right: J. A. Butler, H. L. Smith, R. L. Gray, C. S. Moore, M. O. Pisor, The trustees of the Caruthers Union l-ligh School hold their regular monthly meetings on the third Monday evening of each month. l-l. L. Smith is chairman of the board and lvl. O. Pisor, the clerk. J. A. Butler, Roy Gray, and C Moore are the other members. The trustees manage the school business and decide on certain issues brought before them by the student body. This year the seniors made a petition asking that they could buy class sweaters. The trustees placed their approval on the petition. The trustees also considered a petition to have school dances. They decided, how- ever, to abide by a previous decision to allow only one dance a year, namely, that of the junior-senior banquet. . The five members of this body are constantly devoting their time and attention to the needs of the school. They are spending many long hours in careful considera- tion, to give the community the best educotional opportunities possible, and we wish to thank them for their attention to our numerous needs and wishes. ' Juniors ln the year ot T934 we, as 'lscrubs, entered the portals ot the Caruthers Union l-ligh School, Though trightened as we were, we soon got used to the ways ot high school, and atter initiation we settled down to work. As sophomores we gave the scrubs a party, Although we didn't get to initiate them, they had to entertain us at the party-and very good they were, too. We, as juniors, are torty-seven strong The tirst thing we did as juniors was to elect the tollowing otticers tar the yeari president, Pat Young, yice-president, Louise Ulmer, secretary, Barbara Pike, treasurer, Ruby Righetti, finance committee, Paul Tooker, social committee, Ida Nieto and lrwin Etird. The members ot the junior class are tilling many responsible positions in the schooi and on the annual statti Louise Ulmer and Russell Pisor are the student body vice- presidents, Pat Young is the yell leader, as well as the snap editor ot the annual, and Marian Shook is the assistant business manager ot the annual. Our class play, Little lyliss Fortunef' which was presented on March l9, was the first undertaking ot major importance. The members ot the cast cooperated with their directors in such a way that the work was made a pleasure The reports on the play were so tavorable that we are guite proud ot our accomplishments, The cast consisted of Faye lVlcTeer, Pat Young, Marian Shook, Dorothy. Eshelman, Loraine Bernard, Ada Lee Eaton, Constance Nystrem, lrwin Etird, Edwin Cowan, Frank Mills, and Howard Craven. 16 f Back row, left to right: Karl Fischer, Elmer Torlton, Russell Pisor, Frank Mills, Oliver l-lall, Clarence Prather. First row: Momi Wada, Ruth Jones, Carole Ring, Ruby Pense, Bernice McKinney, Pat Young, Jessie Swacker. Juniors We now have our class rings, and we surely are proud ot them. The junior-senior banquet is our next important event. We expect that it will be the best one that has ever been given at Caruthers l-ligh, The central committee Pat Young, Ruby Righetti, Carole Ring, Faye McTeer, Mary Ladd, Dorothy Eshelman, Marjorie Fraga, Irwin Etird, and Paul Tooker, have selected, as the theme tor the banquet, Valencia, which they plan to carry out as a grape festival in Spain. Ot course, we don't like to brag, but we predict that it will be a pretty grand affair, ottering a good time tor all. Many other interesting projects have been planned during our class meetings and carried out successtully. Our girls have been particularly conspicuous in intra- mural sports and have won many ot their scheduled games. We may proudly admit that the junior class is well represented in athletics, music, debate, dramatics, and other school organizations, and has helped in winning many awards tor the school by its talent. The students ot our class who were on honor study are ltsuko Asa- kawa, l-loward Craven, Minnie Engle, Marjorie Fraga, Caroline Jeremias, Mary Ladd, Bernice McKinney, Faye McTeer, Dorothy Qualls, Ruby Righetti, Carole Ring, Marie Ritter, Marian Shook, Louise Ulmer, and Betty Ward. Our class has been outstanding in many ways and has been a true sport in all of the school activities, whether winner or loser. lt has been above average in scholarship. l-loving completed another important period in our lite, we are now ready to enter upon our last lap and to work tor the highest goals and honors that are within our reach, 'l7 ' Sophomores An eager and confident class walked into th doors of Caruthers Union H gh School this year As freshmen we were fifty eight in all lvlr Walton was our adviser The out come of last year s election was as follows: president Thomas Brown' vice-president Jean Smith' secretary Helen Pisor' treasurer Bill Butlert finance committee Eleanor erg As sophomores we have fifty sos members at the pre ent time although we started with only fifty-one. Miss Nelson is our adviser. The first thing on this year s program was class election. After counting the yeas and nays Thomas Brown was found to be the new occupant of the all highest throne ' James Miyamoto sat as vice-president while Viola Renfro was given the honor of the secretaryship' Bil Walton was trusted with the financial end of the class. Togo lshii was elected to the finance committee and Jean Smith and Angelo Righetti to the social committee By this time there had been completely established in our minds the idea that this is our school that we are a part of it and that we help to make it what it is and what it is to become. We have developed the team-work habit are steadily forging ahead and will soon occupy a conspicuous place in the school s activities. We are proud of our record of the past two years and are looking forward to next year when we shall enjoy the thrill of assuming upper class responsibilities. The sophomore class is trying a new plan, which has never been used in our school before. lt has to do with the buying of the class rings during the junior year. lt is called the budget plan, and we are in hopes that it will teach us thrift and foresight. lt has been used successfully for over four years by the firm selling the rings, and has been a great advantage to the students of other schools where it was adopted. lt will save us money, and we will receive our rings earlier than usual. The Annual Staff Last November the statt met at dinner in the editor's home and made preliminary plans tor the publishing ot the yearbook, and since then they have spent many long hours in caretul consideration and in hard work, intent upon making this the best annual issued so tar. To stimulate the sale ot annuals, a prize was ottered by the statt to the clas having the largest per cent ot student body members by November tirst. Untortun ately, none ot the classes reached the reguired minimum percentage to claim the award. A snapshot assembly was conducted before Christmas, which resulted in obtaining a nice selection ot good snapshots. Several members ot the statt attended the Fresno Bee Yearbook Festival and the San Joaguin Valley Journalism Day in Fresno, where they attempted to get suggestions tor their many tasks. Now, as the work is tinished and the annual goes to press, we wish to extend our sincerest thanks to the student body, the taculty, and the patrons whose interest and cooperation have spurred us on and encouraged us again and again. We determined to build an organization of which we could be proud, and early in the year we elected the following officers: President . - - - Richard Fahrney Secretary-Treasurer Joan Edmonson Librarian --------- Myrna l-lylton The orchestra has assisted in almost all of the assemblies, and our big chance came when we provided the music for the student body variety show. We furnished half an hour of entertainment, with Joan Edmonson as our direc- tor, in the absence of Mr. Grauel, our director, and the twenty-four members of our orchestra wish to take this opportunity to thank him. u-uw-1---' Back row, left to riaht: Joan Edmonson, Leroy Christensen, Elizabeth Gallaher, Isabelle Correia, Leroy Stark, Chi- yoko Mayeda, Richard Grauel, Donald Elder, George Espinola. First row: Richard Fahrney, Sumi Ishii, Mari Asakawa, Myrna Hylton, Alyce Shoii, Mary Ellen Walton, Alfreda Harris. We also played in the county music festival which was held May 2 in the Fresno Memorial Auditorium. The Caruthers freshman orchestra is very proud to point to the fact that they were the largest group of all the orchestras that were represented in that festival. On April l5, we were the guests of the Washington Union High School in their presentation of the operetta, ln Old Louisiana. On Sunday, April 25, the orchestra enjoyed a picnic in Roeding Park. With this wonderful past record haw much will be to their credit by the time these musicians are seniorsl We will all be watching. 30 :WAV Mu A I r' H5 In x ll K El ,Lifml . The purpose of the league was to make the girls of the school helpful, loyal, and courteous to others. This year, on the afternoon of December 3, l936, we held our annual party. It was different from the parties we have had before. All the girls were asked to bring toys for the toy pile. A W. P. A, worker from Fresno furnished the entertain- ment, and refreshments were served by the freshman girls, The officers for the l936-37 term are: president, Noblet, vice-president, Ulmer, secretary, Berg, treas- urer, Young, sergeant at arms, Gilstrap, sponsor, Miss Wall. ' L...-gl ?i Glee Club b, composed of both boys and girls, has done exceedingly well thi year, Under the able direction of Mrs, Bernard, it has been moulded into a compact unit of harmony, Besides affording these songsters an opportunity to study standard part songs, the club rehearsals acquainted the members with good vocal literature adapted to their age and experience, The glee club not only provides a training ground for musicians, but it serves as entertainer at many school functions. The high point of the glee club's work came when they presented the annual operetta, The Buccaneers, which proved a great performance. The high school band and the school orchestra cooperated with the glee club in that entertainment The students in the music classes of the Washington Union High School were our guests at the matinee performance. Although hard playing was done by the B team, they lost every game except that with Riverdale. They deserve credit, however, for staying with basketball throughout the season, in spite of their many defeats. The C boys were the real winners this year, They took the division by winning all the regular league games they played. They also won the semi-final game with Parlier with no trouble at all, and saw the county championship dangling in the air all ready for them to claim. Sad, but they lost the claim on it when Fresno High defeated them with a score of 20 to li Caruthers is proud of the splendid record of her lightweights. A Back row, left to riaht. G. Rarisier, H. We lost our first league game with Laton by a score of l3 to 6. The next game was with Riverdale. Neither of the opposing teams was able to carry' the pigskin across the goal line. The third and final game was played with Sierra. We won l3 to 6.
