HJ Miss Hflewpjdw l D 0 There is a time for recognizing a person who has contributed to the success of Carthage High School. XVe, of the 1967 PINE BURR, wish to honor one whose time has been spent in preparing Carthage youth in the field of mathematics. Miss Helen Rider has striven to improve her teaching through constant participation in summer workshops and mathematic insti- tutes. Miss Rider has sponsored the senior class this year and in the past years she has been a friend to the students in her classes. Her witty sayings, her clever board dis- plays, and her quiet assurance have lent an air of friendly learn-ing to CHS. We salute Miss Helen Rider. In the past, CHS elected a boy and girl who were the Best School Citizen, Most Cour- teous, Cutest Couple, Friendliest, Wittiest, and Most Athletic. The students had such difficulty in deciding on the right category in which to place a student, therefore the PINE BURR staff and Student Council members elected to do away with the old honors. Thus, the students of CHS elected ten classmates to be the CHS Favorites. f x HY' X , 3, '35 an L, qw , n hd A fw ' ' , +A ., ,EAN . gw: : ,1.,- .. Riff. E 5 f j 2 1 if 84 ' -4 'Z a H i . ' EQ? Carthage is proud of its scholastic achievement, which is so strongly promoted by the High School Honor So- ciety. Although many students fail to realize the importance of the Honor Society, to be a member of such an or- ganization is one of the most important parts of one's high school career. The honor roll, which is announced each six weeks, is based upon the top 1592 plus the points that a student receives according to the courses he is taking. For in- stance, a student taking physics receives more points than a student taking homemaking. Thus a student who makes all A's may not necessarily make the honor roll. When a student has been named to the honor roll three times in one year, he is eligible to become a member of the Honor Society. Each student receives an honor pin representing his membership. 37 f:.-. to Donna Austin and Karen McKee placed second in district debate. Included among the year's activities of CHS's Student Council were selling ribbons and conducting pep rallies and bonfires during football season, sponsoring a Sweetheart Dance and other parties, decorating the Christmas tree for the school, and helping with the Heart Fund and March of Dimes Drives. Other annual events sponsored by the council were Twirp Week and Western Day in the spring. Koonce students who are to be entering high school were given information from council members on what to expect next year. The Student Council consists of the officers, homeroom represent- atives, organization presidents, class presidents, and editors of publica- tions. Each homeroom was given a copy of the minutes of each meeting so that all students would know what had been planned. Q Doyle Haynes makes a campaign speech for Stu dent Council elections. ff! Local boys won the County Forestry judging Contest and went to state at Nacogdoches. Programs were provided for the Lions and Kiwanis Clubs. The club also celebrated National FFA Week with downtown window exhibits, rotunda displays, and large posters. i A local project show and sale was held, in which 75 animals were involved. Approx- 'imately 150 were present for the annual Parent-Son Banquet. Much time and hard work also goes into the FFA Parade and Rodeo. The local FFA won a Gold-Star Emblem for being an Outstanding Chapter in the State. This is just what this yearls staff has done. At the Texas A 8: M Publications Wforkshop in the summer, Mary Higginbotham and Hazel Hichols represented the PINE BURR. Our cover design, the one on this yearbook, won third in state competition. Another interesting factor is the mondrian make-up on the theme sheets. This play on Cubism is used in most magazines and newspapers today. It creates balance, harmony, and a solid sense of unity. To start this school year off, staff members met at the Higginbotham home to plan coming activities. The selling of ads was discussed, also. After these were sold, each stu- dent settled down to the task of preparing his own section. i Mess U6wlrCt'Q i Much teamwork is needed on this type of work, however. Attending the Texas High School Press Association at Denton, were Paul Palmer, Le Anne Duckworth, Karen Craddock, Jane jones, Judy Shumate, and Miss Virginia Knapp. Here, the '66 annual won an All-Texas rating.
