Eric Joffrion and J. J. Rushing perform an experi- ment in Chemistry lab. Through the mathematics, science, and social studies departments, students learn to solve problems and to be more aware of the ever-changing world as well as their own community. Carthage High School's mathematics curriculum offers courses ranging from basic arithmetic to trig- onometry and solid geometry. Biology, a subject required for all students, may be followed with more advanced courses of chemistry and physics. In addition to teaching students history, the social studies courses, through Civics, help to develop better citizens. Q Training for future careers, students enroll in typing, book- keeping, shorthand, mechanical drawing, distributive educa- tion, and agriculture. Students planning to enter the business fields have particular interest in the two years of typing and one year each of bookkeeping and shorthand taught. Through the distributive education program junior and senior students obtain part-time jobs and attend school on a half-day basis. 4 In the home economics courses students learn not only cooking and sewing, but also learn nutrition, home furnishings ethics, and child care.
