The students of CHS, as individuals and as groups, are greatly influenced by the generosity and the concern of the townspeople. Likewise, the youth of the area serve as a source of help, pleasure, hope, and enlightenment for those around them. In this 1966 PINE BURR, we, the staff, have tried to express this idea of a mutual cooperation between the town and the school, for as the sages say, We are as strong as our weakest link. Mr. and Mrs. Grady LaGrone are the inspiration and learning stimulus for many students who have entered CHS doors throughout the years. Both have served the school diligently and unselfishly, Mr. Laflrone as guidance counselor, civics teacher, and in many other positions in the pastg and Mrs. l.aGrone as senior high literature instructor, with responsibilities as senior sponsor and annual sponsor for several years. In addition, their con- tributions to the community through civic clubs, church work, the Miss Panola County pageant, P-TA, Lions Club, and many other worthy organizations have won for them the trust and admiration of citizens of the area. For these reasons the PINE BURR staff honors Mr. and Mrs. Lalironentwo important links between school and community. Mrs. LaGrone this year directed the Village Play- ers in the production of Archibald MacLeish's 1.B. Her interest in drama led her to direct the senior play for several years. Her unselfish concern for the future of her students has been an incentive for suc- cess to many of her students. Special Links . . . bv! K. Although a student rarely realizes the importance of the Honor Society nor how one attains this achievement, to be in the Honor Society is one of the most important parts of one's high school career. Basing the honor roll each six weeks upon the top 152 plus the points that a student attains based upon the courses he is taking, makes the student eligible for the honor roll. For instance, physics points count twice what homemaking do. Thus a student who may have all A's mayxnot necessarily make the honor roll. After a student has made the honor roll three times in one year, he is eligible to be in the Honor Society. Carthage prides itself on its scholastic achievement. Only because of the difficult man- ner of gaining admittance to the Honor Society can one understand why scholarship at Carthage is one reason the community and the state consider it a pilot school. .51-:annual t , 1,1 'B , Q1 t 1 i , X T! 3 V' i V I 7 ..1, 'Q lin. Serving the interest and needs of the student body were the homeroom representatives, organization leaders, and class presidents. At the beginning of the year, council officers were responsible for helping new students become familiar with the school. At this time a calendar of dates was formulated. Mimeographed minutes of the meeting were placed in each homeroom by the council. As an incentive for the student body to attend all sports functions, the competition between the classes was instigated. After the homecoming game, the council was host for the Sweetheart Dance in honor of the football sweetheart and her court. An activity of merriment also sponsored was Twirp Week, Students 'were allowed to wear western clothes on Western Day. A new function of the council was to provide eighth graders who would be entering high school in the fall with information on available clubs and activities. Organization leaders spoke to the Koonce audience on their respective clubs. General activities included selling football ribbons, conducting pep rallies, planning receptions after home games, and entertaining the council members with a party in the spring. 1 GQ 1 SPONSOR Left to right: Gary Don Edge, Phil Bounds, Rob Trimble, Eddie Weaver. A Season of Surprise For the best season in two years, the Bulldogs posted a 7-4 over all record and a 4-3 record in district competition, ending up third in 7-AAA. The statistics of football season will soon be forgotten, but memories of events brought about during this time will hold a special place. No Carthage fan will forget the night of the Palestine game. The dismal prospect of dropping the fifth consecutive game, any hope was all but gone for the Bulldogs. With only one minute and fifty- four seconds left in the last quarter the Dogs streaked from behind to win their first game. They were victorious in the next two en- counters. A rivalry dating back forty-three years exists between the two foes, Center and Carthage. Each team had won 20 and tied 2. Car- thage was looking for a victory that would keep them in league standings but upsetminded ,Center put a damper on Carthage's hope by winning in a 14-13 thriller. The Bulldogs then downed league-leading Kilgore 20-O. They were once again in the running to wear the 7-AAA crown. Excitement was great at the pep rally preceding the Carthage- Nacogdoches game for two reasons. It was possibly the last pep rally for seniors to participate in if they were defeated, and an hon- or was bestowed upon a great friend and fan of the Bulldogs, former head coach J. E. fRedj Willis. Coach Willis, a veteran of 44 years of coaching experience, was presented the football used in the Kilgore game and a citation which expressed the deep love, res- pect, and appreciation the students have for Coach Willis. Carthage did not represent the district in the state playoffs, but as Coach Fred Goeke says, It could have been a lot worse. 88 Wins for Carthage i .Eiga 'E Mitchell McMillian, Dale Evans, Eddie Morrison, and Coach Fred Goeke work hard during summer practice. This was the winningest team Carthage has ever produced. The season record was 27-5. The team finished second in Dis- i I trict, one game behind Kilgore. Since the formation of the Koonce junior School three years ago, the Student Council has been one of its leading hands in helping to formulate the work of the school. The students look to the council to make their important decisions, to sponsor its parties and socials, to supervise its elections, and to present to the public the face of Koonce Junior School. A student who serves on the council has contributed toward the success of his junior school and has prepared himself for work in the senior high organization. 2l7 Z 1 Mrs, Philip Koonce, Mr. Philip Koonce and Mrs. Q. M. Marin stand he-fore the portrait of Dr. P. B. Koonce for whom Koonce ,lun School was named, The ceremony took place at the close of school, May 20. 1966. Because of his outstanding support of education and his intensive interest in the success- ful development of the youth of the area, Dr. P. B. Koonce was beloved and respected by all who knew him. An enthusiastic sports fan, president of the school hoard, and local dentist, Dr. Koonce guided the progress of the Carthage Independent School District for many years, and during his term as president, directed the construction of the present high school huilding. Dr. Koonce's memory will live on in the name of P. B. Koonce Junior School and he a constant reminder through the portrait dedicated this year. 2l8 Dr. P.B.
