BETA CLUB The National Beta Club is the honor club at Carthage High School. Each pupil must prove to be outstanding in character, leadership, and scholarship before he is invited to become a member. Upon acceptance of his invitation each pupil, when becoming a member of Beta, pledges, in presence of the student body, to maintain his high standard of scholarship. Although Beta was started at C. H. S. back in 1934, it was allowed to lapse about two years later. It was reorganized in 1943 and has been an active and effective club at Carthage High ever since. 11 President any 45 Brantley Kelly .fi .. , V, . A . Forty freshmen made a crash landing into Carthage High on a clear September day in 1950. Mrs. E. L. Tilley was our homeroom teacher and under her supervision we enjoyed several parties, weiner roasts, an Easter play, a senior farewell tea, and a tour of our capitol city, Raliegh, in May. September, 1951, we returned as Sophomores. Our school was almost as new to us as when we were freshmen, as our new principal, Mr. L. S. Isaacs and several new teachers joined us that year. Our homeroom teacher was Mr. W. B. Hill. This year almost half of our class was tapped into the Beta Club, and a good portion made the Monogram Club. We remember our class parties which were always pleasant occasions. Mrs. Ola Phillips was our Junior homeroom teacher. Thirteen juniors from Fram Life joined us. After grand sales experience, hard work, and diligent plan- ning we gave a banquet that will long be remembered. The theme was Song of the lslands with a Hawaiian setting. Under the starry sky we danced to the strains of the Melody Masters of Sanford. We realized that our time at Carthage High School was getting shorter for the commencement marshalls were chosen. They helped serve refreshments at the farewell tea honoring the seniors and their parents on class night. We still can't believe it, but we are seniors, struggling, as usual, with Mrs. Phillips as our much loved homeroom teacher again. Our Senior play entitled Give Me Credit is to be presented on March 19, 1954. We will leave March 31, for four days, on our long dreamed of trip to Washington, D.C. We have seen many changes take place during our four years. The new ad- dition to the old building and our modern gym have been constructed. We are glad to have had the privilege of enjoying both of them. We are going out from our Alma Mater and as we look back . . . we have grateful memories of faculty members, friends, ball games, hard lessons, and club activities. We will always love you .....
