HISTCDRY It was a bright sunny day in September, 1949, when 40 Freshmen pushed through the already assembled throng of upper classmen as we entered Carthage High School. Our home room teacher that year was Mrs. Young Allen, known to us then as Miss Helen Boyette. We were confused by the various rules and regulations, clanging bells and changing classes. Miss Meade Seawell put us through a hard year in English, but by the time June rolled around we were firmly established in the life at CHS, and were eagerly looking for- ward to the Sophomore year. When school reopened in September the newly self-confident Sophomores began to look down on the incoming Freshmen and labeled them green as grass and not knee high to a duck , and marvelled at the amount of knowledge we, ourselves, had amassed in one short year. That same year interest in athletics reached a new high, We had the privilege of seeing our boys basketball team win the Moore County Tournament. The Junior year was one the class will long remember. The big event of the Junior year was the Junior-Senior banquet. The banquet with an April Shower theme was a success. In order to raise funds the class raffled a turkey at Thanksgiving and a ham at Christ- mas. Right before school was out the class went to White Lake to spend the day. That brought an end to the highlights of the Junior year. The Senior year full of vivid memories of a sneak day to Myrtle Beach, our class play, Busy As A Beaver , and a four day tour of Washington, D,C, has been the happiest of all. The class will be remembered by the various positions of honor held by its members. Jerry McLean took the spotlight as president, Johnny Grimm as vice president, Helen Scott as secretary, and Mary Ellen Smith as treasurer. Our beloved adviser Miss Meade Seawell was our guide and inspiration. To raise funds for the trip to Washington we raffled a turkey, gave a chicken stew, and put on a play. The most eagerly anticipated social event of the Senior year was the Junior-Senior banquet and Prom. In a beautiful colonial setting and soft lights we danced to the strains of the 82nd Airborne Division band. We will soon receive our diplomas then we go to scatter to the four corners of the world. But where ever we go we shall never forget our four years at Carthage High School. Harriet Davis Class Historian H
