So spoke Mr. Rice at the first convocation program in 1936. Yes, it is a small class, for today there are only 125 membersg but the multitude of honors that have been bestowed upon the members would indicate that quality is far better than quantity. In all organizations and athletics the juniors have predominated. On the basket- ball court three outstanding members of the varsity were of the class of 1940. The juniors play a large part in the musical organizations, over half of the soloists and quartet members are juniors, and in the recent operetta eight of the thirteen principal parts were played by members of this class. The juniors furnish the leaders for the dramatic and literary societies and the two members of the debate team are members of this class. To be eligible for election to the National Honor Society, a student must rank in the upier third of his class in scholarship. The faculty votes for the pupils on the basis of character, leadership, service, and scholarship. Not more than fifteen per cent of any senior class or more than five per cent of any junior class may be elected to this organization. The service of the society to the school will be to serve as student council this year. A student council participates in the government of the school with its powers delegated to it by the principal and the faculty Since they are directly responsible to the superintendent and to the board of education. Both of these teams were heavy' favorites. Continuing to win, they beat Aurora 12-0 and Lamar 19-6 to make it five in a row. Then Fate took a hand and Joplin handed Carthage their first defeat of the season with two field goals scoring six points to the Tigers' nothing. Mt. Vernon then made it two defeats by beating Carthage 18-6. Webb City then put the finishing touches on the season vi ith a 6-0 defeat of Carthage. O 3515665111 Although a minor sport, baseball has become very' popular in the high school. This is shown by the large number of boys reporting for baseball each year. This year fifty-five boys came out for the first practice and have taken much interest in developing the skills of the game. Coach Amos had a very small nucleus of lettermen around which to build this year's team. However, the replacements necessary due to graduation were well taken by members of this year's squad. Carthage has made a splendid record by winning the League championship the past three years with very few defeats. The team this year is living up to tradition by shaping into a splendid ball team, that is on its way toward another championship. TOP ROW-Paul Carter, Roland Stearns, Tom Hodson, Joe Morrow, Kenneth Hickey, Jonathan Sharp, Eugene Rapp, Dick Deming, Bob Howseman, LaVerne Dudman, Harland Rush, Bill Morgan, Bob Woods. Joe Vivion, A. H. Rogers, Jack Boggess, Lloyd Isbell, James Montgomery, Jack Haizlip, Carl Rush. Track Coach Dunphy's prospects for a track team were unusually bright this year, for eight of last year's lettermen returned. The first event of the season, a dual meet with Joplin, occurred April 6, after a very brief training period. April 14 the Tigers competed in the Jasper County meet in Joplin. The following week part of the squad entered the William Jewell invitation high school meet. A part of the squad also entered the state meet in Columbia the last week in April. The last event of the season, the Big Eight conference meet, was held in Monett, May 2. One of the biggest track and field events, the annual Joplin relays, was abandoned this year. Tournament! Eldon Tournament Carthage entered four tournaments. The tournament at Eldon, however, was the most important in the sense that an inspired Carthage team, although losing a prac- tice game to Eldon, came through to win first place by defeating four first rate teams. Larry Flanigan, a member of the Carthage team, was awarded a medal for the best defensive player. Jasper County Tournament For the first time in years, Carthage held a tournament here inviting various schools in Jasper county to participate. Carthage and Joplin were the only two teams seeded. In the first game Carthage nosed out Carterville, 80-29. By virtuelof two other victories, Carthage won their way to the finals where they were beaten by Joplin, 21-20. Regional Tournament Carthage entered the regional tournament at Neosho defeating Webb City in the opening game only to lose another game to Joplin by a small score. In the consolation game Carthage lost a heart breaking game to Springfield. Junior High Tournament A team composed of Freshmen won the Junior High Tournament at Joplin by defeating four excellent quintets.
