Two matches were fired in January with the neighboring Joplin R. O. T. C. rifle teams, one at Carthage and the other at Joplin. The group also took part in the Corps Area Match, the results of which were mailed to the division offices in Omaha, Ne- braska, the Kemper Military Academy Match and the Hearst Trophy Match. The local rifle team is chosen from the R. O. T. C. unit as a whole. Practices are held several times a week at the Armory. The results of these practices determine the members of the team. Major E. This new group has a membership of 34. The Mariner Corps is a strictly demo- cratic organization and carries out the same idea as the R. O. T. C., of Which it is a part, in awakening student appreciation of the obligations of fine citizenship. Being a drill corps the outstanding advantages for the individual girl are physical exercises and discipline. The corps took part in several parades during the year and was a part of the mili- tary circus held at Junge Field in Joplin during the Fiesta celebration. Sergeant Leigh P. Carthage played Alba, Carterville, and Oronogo, mem- bers of the eastern half of the conference, and the winner in this group met the win- ner of the western half of the association. A large number reported this year for baseball. This may be attributed to the fact that it is a comparatively new sport in the athletic program and to the fact that this participation will give experience to those who are interested in try-outs for the new Carthage municipal baseball team. This Carthage team will be operated in conjunc- tion with the Pittsburgh Pirates and will make use of both foreign and local material. HYSICAL education for girls is anoth- er of the new activities recently es- tablished in Carthage High School. This year for the first time one teacher gave her entire time to the direction of the physical education training. These classes made use of a wide va- riety of games and similar activities. On clear days the main campus of the school was used by the students for their activities. On rainy days and during the winter months classes were conducted at the gymnasium on the second floor of the Recreation Center and also in the Y. M. C. A. building, which is adjacent to the Recreation Center. ln a social way the physical education classes were also active this year. ln J anu- ary the group entertained at a tea dance which was attended by a large number of the Carthage High School students. Swimming, bowling, dancing, and tennis were part of the year's program and were offered in an attempt to improve the physi- cal condition of the girls enrolled in the classes. The dances used include the waltz, ma- zurka, polka, schottische, ballet, tap and modern. All are considered as corrective rhythms. This year's advancement in swimming, tennis, bowling, volley ball and so forth, has given rise to the feeling that teams of girls will soon be organized in other Big Eight schools and that competition will probably follow the same as with the boy's football, basketball, track, baseball, golf and tennis teams.
