(Jar haye Cjo n n unity Dfiyh School In September 1963 the plaintiffs of the case--the class of 1967--began a suit against Carthage Community High School for diplomas. The suit was to drag out for four heated years, opening with his Honor Ihrig presiding. During the first session of the trial, the attorneys for the plaintiffs were Ann Goetz, Chairman; John Wilson, vice- chairman; Pam Allen, clerk; and Dave Dion, representative. The defense council and assistant were Mrs. Hedge- cock and Mr. Armstrong. The plaintiff's plan of argumentation was to show by precept and example that their combined abilities had earned them their diplomas. The first witnesses were the Sweetheart Ball attendants, Alice Ancelet and Steve Siegfried, who testified of the Class's sociability. Connie Gregory was a late arrival. Leona Beaver, Barbara Dobbins, and Bill Young were subpoenaed but soon left. The second session of the trial began with D. ve Dion as chairman of the attorneys for the plaintiffs: Kevin Walker, vice-chairman; Warren Johnson, representative; and Steve Siegfried, court clerk. Witnesses arriving late were Richard Welch, Chris Curtis, Steve Archer, Linda Bethard, John Myers, and Pat Taylor. The witnesses who left the court room were Mary Garard, Connie Kellett. Larry Lovell, Benny McMillan, Tommy Smith, Connie Gregory, Judy and Sharon Toothman, Steve Benjamin, and Frank Boyer. Those who came but soon left were Tom Kelly and Steve Goodwin. Character witnesses from the National Honor Society were: Shirley St. Clair, Ann Goetz, Bill Knight, John Myers, Hannah Bernstein, Marjorie Smith, Bonnie Swarbrick, and Linda Melvin. The defense attorneys were Mrs. Riggs and Mr. Humke. Finally, after nine long months, the trial was recessed for three months. The third session of the trial began with a new judge - the Honorable Ronald H. Fraser. The new attorneys for the plaintiffs were: John Myers, chairman; Ann Goetz, vice-chairman; John Wilson, representative; and Ramona Duffy, treasurer. Linda Melvin was the clerk of the court. The defense attorneys were Mrs. Cobb and Mr. Brown. The first witnesses were the Homecoming attendants--Queen, Susan Siegfried, and attendants Ann Goetz, Nancy 98 Campbell, and Alice Ancelet--who again testified of the sociability of the class of 1967. Next came the cast of the Junior Class play, We Dude It , who made a dramatic testimony of the acting ability of the plaintiffs. To show how industrious and hard-working the class was, many witnesses told of the thought, planning, and fun in- volved with the Junior-Senior Prom, Gone With the Wind”. Nancy Campbell and Randy Allen, Prom Queen and King, and attendants Linda Melvin and Dave Dion, Pam Allen and John Myers testified that the prom was a great success. A final dramatic testimony of the honor and good citizenship of the class of '67 was made by Pam Jobe and Rick Weinberg, new Honor Society members; Barb McDaniels and Tim Tomlinson, Girls' and Boys' State Winners; and by John Myers, winner of the History award. In this 1965-66 session, Joanne Carle and Mary Ann Londrie were the only new witnesses. Wendell Biggs came and soon left. Many witnesses were disappointed with the turn of events and so decided to leave. These people were: Joy Casley, Alice Ellefritz, David Kelly, Sheila Shepler, Steve Siegfried, Jim Sewell, Diana Young, Steve Archer, and Wendell Biggs. The final year of the suit began with John Myers, chairman; Randy Allen, vice-chairman; Pam Jobe, clerk; Richard Rea, treasurer; and Kevin Walker, representative; as new attorneys for the plaintiffs. The defense coun- cil was Miss Allison and Mr. McClanahan. Newly chosen character witnesses of the National Honor Society were brought to the witness stand. They were: Audrey Clark, Joy Dittmer, Ruth Folkerts, Carla Huls, and Karen Smith. The plaintiff next called Pam Allen, Ronnie Allen, Alice Ancelet, Dave Dion, Bev Thompson, Randy Allen, Linda Melvin, John Wilson, Barb McDaniels, and John Myers. These Homecoming Queen and King candidates testified on the class’s sociability. The next witnesses were Susan Siegfried, Pam Allen, Alice Ancelet, and Ann Goetz, who testified that the class of '67 had maintained good school spirit throughout the trial. 99 These members of the class showed the responsibility that they were entrusted with: Dave Dion - President of the Student Council Ann Goetz - Editor of the Blue Hi-Lites Pam Jobe - Editor of the Carthaginian Ramona Duffy - President of GAA Kevin Walker - President of Band Richard Rea - President of C-Club Warren Johnson - President of the Choruses Joy Dittmer - President of Thespians Bev Thompson - President of FHA Phil Alexander - President of FFA Bonnie Swarbrick - President of National Honor Society Marjorie Smith - President of the Library Club New witnesses were Michelle Park, Sandra Hunter, Vicki Pickett, and Sam Grimm. The defense council’s evidence was overruled because it was hearsay. The four-year suit ended May 29, 1967, in favor of the plaintiff. They received their diplomas that evening in the high school gymnasium.
