Lawyers: jetstar Clark flirt Emmert tiger Gronewold Rodger dodger Snodgrass Witnesses: Allison DiBona THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY The mighty ship Class of '65 set sail from the great Continent of Scofield on May 25, 1961. Destination--Island of CCHS. Auxiliary forces were sent from the surrounding islands of Ferris, Denver, Bentley, and Brunside. Upon arrival at CCHS on August 28, 1961, after we were taken prisoner by Chief Ihrig, the first order of business was the election of ship's officers. These were: Captain Keith Hartweg, First Mate John Wright, Keeper of the Journal and Treasure Chest Sue Kipling, and Representative of the Crew Tom Sherer. The treasure chest needed replenishing immediately, so we crew members made a few extra gold pieces by selling birchbark programs at native football games. Also, to spur the lagging spirits of the crew, Linda Dickenson, Sue Kipling, and Susan Emmert were chosen as cheerleaders. Unfortunately we lost a few of our members to an unfriendly group of cannibals during our first year. The casualty list included Andy Brown, Jaynes Carey, Pat Faulkner, Rhonda Flynn, Viola Katzenburger, George Moore, and Nancy Thomas. Our first year on the island we managed to learn a few customs of the natives. We learned the native languages from Hedgecock, McCallister and Riggs. From Witchdoctor Rodeffer we learned that x coconuts plus y coconuts equals one coconuts tree. We learned about the rocks of the land and the working of crude machines from Cannibals Kern and Humke. Also, we learned the latest native chants and bongo beats from Glenn the head-hunter Mortenson. Our second stage of our voyage began in the autumn of 1962. By then we were more used to the customs of the island. Leading our crew this year were: Captain John Wright, First Mate Mike Austin, Keeper of the Journal and Treasure Chest Gloria McDaniel, and Representative of the Crew Martha Johnson. Added to our worthy crew were the following deserters from other ships: Albert Ancelet, Dorothy Stigall, Dean Grafton, and Carmen Wright. Deserters from our crew were Billy Cox, Sylvia Crear, Leonard Etter, Ike Gann, Steve Gann, Susan Gann, Wanda Hale, Sharon Kellett, Rose Lara, Bill Moon, Connie Murphy, Connie Smith, Jack Patrick, and Rita White. Chosen to cheer us this year were Bobbi Stewart. Sue Kipling, Linda Dickenson, and Susan Emmert. We furthered our knowledge of the island this year by learning of the plant and animal life of the island from Cannibal Kern. For service above and beyond the call of duty those chosen to the National Honor Society were Diana Burkhart, Joyce Crawford, Barb Gorby, Sue Kipling, Larry Markey, Gloria McDaniel, Diana Newman, and John Wright, and Martha Johnson. Representing our crew at the Love Dance this year were Mike Austin and Sue Kipling. Leading us in the third stage of our voyage at Island CCHS were Captain Mike Huston, First Mate Rudy Aten, Keeper of the Journal Jetty Clark, Keeper of the Treasure Chest Barb Gorby, and Representative of the Crew Sue Kipling. Those who deserted our ranks this year were Greg Benjamin, Leona Dobbins, Steve Hade, Louis Logan, Bobbi Stewart, and Connie Welch. Mike Baird was the only addition. For the entertaining of the crew and for a few extra gold pieces for the treasure chest, some of the members presented a play entitled ARSENIC AND OLD LACE. Representatives to the Love Dance this year were Jim Brewer and Linda Dickenson. Chosen to the National Honor Society were Mike Baird, Jetty Clark, Linda Dickenson, Steve Hade, Mike Huston, Linda Markey, Bob Monnier, and Sarah Russell. Sue Kipling was crowned Homecoming Queen and her two Junior Attendants were Linda Dicken- son and Sandi VanBeck. Now that We had attained the status of three-year residents of CCHS island, we were permitted to put on the traditional all-night brawl called The Days of Wine and Roses . Reigning over the festivities were Queen Martha Johnson and King John Wright. Barb Gorby and Bob Monnier were chosen to attend Girl's State and Boy's State. The last stretch of our visit to the CCHS Island began in the fall of 1964. Leading us this year were Captain Martha Johnson, First Mate Jim Brewer, Keeper of the Journal Susan Emmert, Keeper of the Treasure Chest Joyce Crawford, and Representative of the Crew Linda Dickenson. Karen VanHove was chosen Homecoming Queen. Her Senior attendants were Sharon Jones and Bev Dion. Elected to other positions of leadership on the Island of CCHS were the following: Mike Huston, president of Student Council; Barb Goby, editor of Blue Hi-Lites: Martha Johnson, editor of the Carthaginian; Jetty Clark, president of GAA; Bob Snodgrass, president of band; Tom Gronewold, president of the choruses; Mike Austin, president of C-Club; Karen VanHove, president of FHA; Jim Brewer, president of FFA; John Wright, president of National Honor Society. Several of our worthy crew received special awards. Sharon Hurt received the Betty Crocker award for best stew making. The following were given State Scholarships to aid their escape from the island. There were the following: Connie Benoodt, Mike Cravens, Joyce Crawford, Susan Gelhaar, Barb Gorby, Martha Johnson, Larry Markey, Bob Monnier, and Diana Newman. Jetty Clark was Queen and Steve McNally King at the Love Dance. Senior attendants were Steve Hanks and Linda Brodie. We added more pieces to the treasure chest through the production of our play MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS. The following were added to the list of honorables in the National Honor Society: Connie Benoodt, Bob Snyder, Karen VanHove, and Pat Williams. On May 28, 1965 we were all rescued, and each of us went to his destination. THE PROPHECY OF THE SENIOR CLASS Today was the big day for Sue and Rudy. Today was the day they were to take the tractor into New York City for its yearly tune up. So Rudy, all dressed in his bib overalls, fired up the big John Deere's diesel and Sue parked herself next to him. (It was a tractor built for two.) Rudy peeled her into the highway and they began their 50 mile drive to the big city. Cruising along at 25 miles their mighty John Deere was passed about every 10 seconds. Most were polite in doing so, but there was this one guy in a black Ferrari. He just pulled up along side the John Deere, reved up the engine and pupped the clutch. Rudy identified the guy as Rich Ancelet and Sue identified the 3 chicks in the car with him as Cinda Hardy, Carolyn Burdette, and Lisa Fecht. Tied onto his bumper was a 25 foot piece of rope hooked to a little red wagon. And in the wagon--you guessed it--none other than Karen VanHove. Still the same old Richard was the remark made by one of them. It seemed hardly 5 minutes since the incident with the Ferrari when they were almost scared off the tractor with loud blasts similar to that of a dragstrip. Sure enough, 2 cars were dragging--one a red Volkswagen driven by Martha Johnson and a yellow and purple polka-dot Mustang driven by Dennis Newell. It looked like a close race but Dennis had about a car-lenghth lead. A few more miles went by when Rudy noticed they were about out of gas. Noticing a gas station up ahead, they decided to pull in. First waiting on them was owner and operator of the station, Butch Lovell. Sue went inside where she was waited on by the owner's wife, Linda Kelley. Sue asked where the powder room was, and she was told to ask the rest room attendant in the white suit for the key. The attendant turned out to be Roxie Ranck. Meanwhile, as Trent Lawrence and Larry Patrick were checking over the tractor, Rudy noticed Tom Bishop painting a racing stripe on an old black Mercury. Finally both were ready so they headed out again for the big city. Our twosome had chugged along about another 25 miles when they began to see big signs warning of highway construction ahead. Rudy slowed the tractor as they came into the con- struction zone. There were five workmen working on this stretch. At the head of the new was a tower of strength--namely Terry Young. On the air hammer was Bob Carle; David Grainger had control over the crane; the dump truck was manned by Jerry Whitaker and the man waving traffic through was Phil Cale. Our team moved right through the construction zone on Mr. Cale's instruction and were winging their way to the city again. A little while later they were right smack in the middle of New York City. They came to a stop at one intersection where a policeman was directing traffic. Sue recognized the police- man as Russell Harrell. Right next to them as they were stopped, there was a man yelling Extra, Extra, Read all about it. Yes, sure enough, it was Mike Welsh selling the New York Times. The first thing Sue and Rudy decided to do was check into a Hotel. Rudy pulled the big John Deere right up next to the awning covered entrance to the Hilton Hotel. The doorman helped Sue off the tractor and es- corted them inside to the desk. Rudy signed in, but in doing so he noticed there was a long list of names ahead of his. Hey, Mack, he said, This hotel holds all these people signed up here? ” Sure, that's the list of names for the Mother's Convention we're holding this afternoon. Rudy recognized several names on the list--namely Colleen Fink, Jennie Gann, Marsha Gordon, Connie Mabry, Sharon Mosely, Sandi VanBeck, and Joan Hasten. Then the bellboy arrived and took Sue and Rudy to their room. The maid was just finishing up the cleaning. She startled both of them as she turned around, for it was none other than Gloria McDaniel. Room's ready, she pronounced and hurried out of the room. Boy, this room's even got a TV in it, Rudy said as he went over to flick it on. Naturally a commercial was on. It was the doublemint gum commercial song, and singing it was Rodger and Bob Snodgrass accompanied by Bev Dion and Joyce Crawford on the Clarinets. I guess there's nothing on that thing. he said as he shut it off. Sue picked up the newspaper to see what there was to do in this town. She turned to the theater page and found one nearby the hotel. It was the Mike Baird Cinema Theater. A double was playing. The first show starred Dale, Eddie, and Mary Galloway in Those Galloways and the second one starred Donna, Larry, and Linda Markey in Stark in the Dark. That didn't sound too interesting so she turned the page. On this page was a big ad telling of an open house at the Charles Hoing High School to show modern teaching techniques. Sue, being a teacher at the local farm school, immediately talked Rudy into going over. While there they met many members of the faculty, including Bob Monnier and Diana Newman, the Math Dept, heads, Connie Benoodt, counselor for girls, Agriculture instructor Phil Wildrick, English Dept, instructor Sandy Bennett. Also while there they were shown the grade school section by principal Mark Rogers. Today the first graders were being treated to some fairy stories told by Keith Hartweg and Sharon Jones disguised as Mother and Father Goose. At the end of the school tour Sue and Rudy decided to take in a baseball game. Seeing that Shea stadium, home of the Mets, was right across the street. Rudy bought the tickets and a program and they found their seats. Checking the program they found several familiar names on the list. Batting a cool .230 and playing shortstop for the Mets was Mike Walton. The batboy was Shotsie Huls and head umpire was one Mr. Richard Kinman. A few seconds later the P.A. announcer blurted out that the national anthem would be sung by Michael Huston accompanied by Kinda Dickenson on her swingin' oboe. No sooner was that ordeal over when a familiar voice was heard-- Hot dogs here; get your red-hot dogs! Yes, it was none other than Mike Kilgore plastering a weiner with mustard. After the ballgame was over, they decided to walk thru Central Park to get to the Empire State Building. As they walked thru the park, they met Jim Brewer and Linda Brodie coon hunting right in the middle of the park. They finally reached the Empire State Building. They got into the elevator that would take them to the top. The elevator operator was Mick Milby. Also on the way up to the top floor was the chief engineer for J. J. Freeman Tinker Toys Inc., Carol Jacob. They then walked into the observation room where you are able to see the N. Y. sky- line. Up over 1, 000 feet washing the windows was Lanny Guymon and Andy Newman. A blimp also flew with a banner streaming behind it saying VOTE FOR PATTY WILLIAMS IN 1984. Right after the blimp went by, they noticed a lot of confusion on the ground. It seems someone had fallen out of a window. Sue and Rud made their way to the street and found that the unfor- tunate person was Bob Ferrell. The ambulance was ready with Dr. Austin with help of nurse Sharon Hurt administering first aid. He called for a stretcher and over came Greg Jones and Steve McNally to carry him off. He only fell 13 stories so he wasn't hurt too badly. Rud then said that he was going back to the hotel, but Sue said she wanted to go to Macy's Dept. Store. She waved down a taxi and rode to Macy's. The taxi was ably driven by Bob Snyder. While buying over $300. 00 worth of items there she met Elaine Dittmer, saleslady at the Cosmetic Dept, and Robert Reed who sold her a Madras umbrella for the tractor. Macy's had a hair salon in the basement so that was Sue's next stop. Right in the chair next to Sue was Carol Schone, and the beautician was Carmen Wright. The manicuring was done by Rose Mary Rea. That little deal cost her another $25 so Sue thought she better get back to the hotel to spruce up for their dinner engagement at the N. Y. Playboy Club, owned and operated by John Chenoweth. At 7 o'clock Sue and Rud were off to the night club. They entered the club and checked their hats and coats with the hat and coat girl, Candy Smith. The two sat down at the table and noticed that at the table right next to them sat Connie Duffy and Bob Kurrle and Tom Grone- wold and Susan Emmert all dressed up like beatniks. Man, they were snapp'n their fingers and stompin' their feet just like they were right out of Greenwich Village. Across the aisle the other way sat the editor-publisher of PLAYBOY magazine, Ronald Lucas and his wife Karen Graham and their 14 kids. Albert Ancelet was head waiter assisted by his wife Barb Gorby. The entertainment was directed by the master of Ceremonies Dan Harnetiaux and the music was provided by a combo called Dean Grafton and his Nelsons. Conrad was at the bass guitar, Ronnie at the organ, Connie at the drums, and Dean on the harmonica. They sang a tune called the Denver Market Blues . Also roaming around the club were cigarette girls, Leah Boston and Sherri Welch. In addition, photographer Mike Cravens was busily photographing John Wright with Sarah Russell (Mike's model) on his lap. Then the big surprise of the evening was presented. The U. S. Olympic team was presented to the guests. The squad was coached by Ronnie Reed who was assisted by Diana Burkhart. Some of the members of the squad were Jetty Clark, pole vaulter; Susan Gelhaar, shot put: Alice Spiker, swimming gold medalist; Peggy Rampley, Olympic wrestling champion; Tom Sherer, golfer; and Dick Lunt. horse jockey. After the introduction of the rest of the team, Rudy glanced at his watch. It was almost midnight and they had to be home by five the next morning to milk the cows. So they went back to the hotel, packed up, and climbed on the tractor ready to head back home.
