COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 3i2 444 1 THE 1964 CARTHAGINIAN CARTHAGE COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL, CARTHAGE, ILLINOIS EDITOR--Ann Ropp ASSISTANT EDITOR--Steve Hade BUSINESS MANAGER--Marsha Kiesow ASSISTANT BUSINESS MANAGER--Mike Huston Dedication We, the Carthaginain Staff, of 1963-64, dedicate this annual to Mr. Richard Biery and Mr. Marvin Humke. This dual dedication represents our sincere appreci- ation and admiration for a faculty which has made our school careers meaningful, profitable, and enjoyable. Mr. Biery and Mr. Humke have been particularly dedicated to making our school years a success. We are indebted to them for having set a stand- ard of ideals which will lead us to a pleasurably productive life. 2 The chinking student who, hour by hour, is true to his duty and himself is the student for whom there is always a place of distinction. The graduate who has earned for himself this reputation will be sought after by colleges and employers alike, and in these days of over-flowing colleges and unemployed youth, this statement is worthy of deep consideration. --E. And in conclusion we, the class of 1964, wish to bequeath to the Janitors, the unsung heroes of the boiler room, the sole use of the halls, bathrooms, and other facilities; to the faculty, the illustrious patrons of all knowledge and social behavior, the sole possession of the monogramed church key of the Senior class, also to the teachers what is left of their already feeble minds; to the administration, the protector of the underdog, the sole right and privilege to attend any and all school functions; to the cooks, the epitome of culinary perfection, the extensive supply of .Weiners and Kraut, cornbrcad and beans, and chipped beef on biscuits; to the head bus driver, Axie, a complete roadmap including all known shortcuts; to the student body we bequeath the exclusive privilege of entering the hallowed halls of CCHS in 1964-65; and to the school in general, the world renowned institution of learning, we bequeath the golden memories of days gone by. Lawyers- Mustain Orum Gronewold Roeth Witnesses: Allison Di Bona The Four Years War The shot heard ’round the world was fired on August 29. 1960, at Fort CCHS. In the declaration of war. Major General Dela- bar, head of the opposing forces, defied us to surmount the coming onslaught of education. Our forces of one hundred draftees marched into war led by Major General Moore (President), Lieutenant Colonel Prior (Vice President), Lieutenant Siegfried (Secretary), Captain Derks (Treasurer), and Sergeant Lionberger, (Student Council Representative). The recruits dispersed into various fronts. Among these were the Valley of the Shadow of Algebra, guarded by Colonel Davidson; the bottomless abyss of scientific knowledge, haunted by Colonel Kern; and the treacherous swamp of grammar, poetry, and literature, blocked by Lieutenant Hedgcock. The most feared adversary of all was the RUTHless veteran of the Gallic Wars, Drill Sergeant Riggs. To speak in their behalf, the enemy appointed peace envoys, Allison and Kem. In succeeding campaigns we fought on similar fronts against such notorious opponents as Corporal Ruth the Roadrunner Priddy, Major Mad Marvin Humke, lieutenant Happy Benjy Schroder, Admiral Clarence Lefty. . . Uh. . . Uh. . . Uh. .. Uh Wilson, Captain Hurry Up John Rodeffer, Private Fourth Class Timid Tony DiBona, and Commander Curly Bob Armstrong. Almost as great as our education battles were our financial ones, but victor)' came at last when we emerged from debt on Freshman's Day, better known as April 1. The tactic used in this maneuver—collection of class dues. During this campaign, the army of one hundred was diminished by the loss of Judy Amerine, Joseph Bartholowmew, James Booth, Larry Ellefritz, Earl McHugh, Sharon Frueh, Sandra Taylor, and Pat Ulrich. These were our only casualties in the battle of the Freshman Frenzy. In the second year our defense was strengthened by Mary Fleming, Penny Flynn, Ricky Grisham, Pat Hancox, and Donna Koslowski. The enemy retaliated by sending in four star General E. L. Ihrig, better known as ELI. The battles that followed were plotted by General Moore (President), lieutenant Colonel Gronewold (Vice-president), Lieutenant Derks (Secretary), Captain Wilhite (Treasurer), and Sergeant Edwards (Student Council Representative). These able-bodied leaders initiated such unique operation as the sale of candy, the construction of the world's only birthday calendars, and the patenting of the invaluable aid to study, the sophomore book holder. The casualty list for this battle included Pat Cramer, Bobby Dean, Penny Flynn, Norman Ganion, Mike Grim, George Jackson, John Martin, Donna Pennington, and Nina Watson. Following the war's second year, the following company leaders were decorated for scholarship excellence by admittance to the National Honor Society: Bill Edwards, Sharon Folkerts Johnson, Norman Ganion, Marsha Kiesow, Rodney McGaughey, John Martin, Elwanda Merritt, Jim Moore, Steve Mustain, Chuck Prior, and Lester Redenius. At the end of the third year, the following names were added to the honorable list: Judy Boyer, Mick Derks, Vernon Huls, John Lionberger, Jane Minor, and Steve Orum. Added to the ranks of glory at the end of the fourth year were Judi Rice, Ann Laffey, Diana Gronewold, and Tom Tomlinson. The victories of our first two years enabled us to acquire the advantages of upper classmanship. To prove our worth we took a summer campaign which led us to the infamous battle of the ice cream social on the local village green. To bolster our forces for this all-out effort, we acquired strategists such as Charles Betts, Claudia Betts, Donna Finley, Sharon Haley, Rosalyn Hardy, Kathy Karvonen, Allen Moore, and Wayne Wetzel. To break the monotony of military life, our camp was made the scene of a theatrical production entitled CURTAIN GOING UP. To celebrate our past achievement and to encourage us in our further endeavors, we converted the fort into a Hawaiian Island for the presentation of our prom, Surf and Shadows. This wondrous achievement was accomplished only with the help of our foreign advisors, Allison and Rodeffer. Reigning over the festivities were Paulette Ogren and Bob Hanks. The morning after the night before, The following casualties were discovered: Chuck Betts, Claudia Betts, Donna Finley, Linda Gann, Ricky Grisham, Pat Hancox, Rosalyn Hardy, Arden Moon, Allen Moore, Joyce Russell, Jim Ward, and James Warren. At the end of the year, Commanding Officers Edwards (President), Moore (vice-president), Gronewold (Secretary), lion- berger (Treasurer), and Hanks (Student Council Representative) passed command to Officers Prior (President), Kiesow (Vice-presi- dent), McDaniel (Secretary), Johnson (Treasurer), and Mustain (Student Council Representative). Delegates Jim Moore and Kathy McDaniel were selected to attend Boy's State and Girl's State for further training in warfare tactics. We began the decisive battle with Sharon Davis, William Holmes, and Shirley Jean Lowe as new draftees for our cause. The following members of our core were promoted to positions of leadership in their respective divisions: Jim Moore was president of the student council. Diana Gronewold was editor of the Blue Hi Lites. Ann Ropp was editor of the Carthaginian. Ann Laffey was president of the GAA. Larry Dittmer was president of the band. Bob Hanks was president of the C-Club. Jane Minor was president of the choruses. Judy Boyer was president of the FHA. Lester Redenius was president of the FFA. Bill Edwards was president of the Honor Society. Again the enemy chose to revitalize their diplomatic legation by sending in the Pizza Bender, Anthony Di Bona, to aid Ambassador Allison. Flown in especially for demonstrating the use of a new weapon called MOTHER IS A FRESHMAN was Douglas Jet Myers, the Kirksville cannonball. After four long years of war, we found the following soldiers worthy of distinguished honors for good citizenship: Diana Gronewold, Bob Hanks, Marsha Kiesow, Bill Edwards, Judy Boyer, who also won the Betty Crocker Award. The Illinois State Scholarship Commission recognized the following troops: Mike Bernstein, Jim Moore, Steve Houston, Mike Derks, Steve Orum, Marshe Kiesow, Kathy Karvonen, Ann Laffey, Steve Mustain, Lester Redenius, Jane Minor, John Lion- berger, and Larry Dittmer. Now we come to the end of the great Four Years War. Victory is in sight. Eighty-four survivors are expected to hear the liberty bell ring at 3:38 p. m. on May 28, la964. Thus we, the official historians of the class of 1964, conclude our history with the hope that our comrades will not turn us over to our adversaries to be persecuted for the remarks we have made about them in this document. 61 Senior Achievements DAVID KEITH ADAMS: Boys'Chorus 2.3,4; F.
