— 1963 Carthaginian Editor....................Nancy Eichhorn Assistant Editor...................Ann Ropp Business Manager...................Mary Sullivan Assistant Business Manager. . . . Marsha Kiesow Mr. Ihrig’s Message Educators and parents must not forget that America’s greatest defense is knowledge and wisdom. America’s greatest wealth, her youth. Our youth of today will find among their needs for the future, the skills and at- titudes for effective human relationships; the communication skills and problem- solving skills for living in a complex society; marketable skills in handling vocational assignments in an ever changing automated world. These skills and goals may be attained only through the cooperation of three groups: dedicated teachers--responsive students--concerned parents. May the graduates of C.C.H.S. always be well prepared to reach THEIR goals. --E. L. Ihrig Principal Dedication We, the Yearbook Staff, in appreciation of his diligence and hard work as yearbook sponsor, his ability to make our work interesting and enjoyable, and his willingness to prepare us for higher educa- tion, do dedicate this 1963 Carthaginian to Mr. Dan Kern. He is not only an inspiring teacher, but a true friend to every student. . . . Carthaginian Staff Administration STANDING: Albert Johnson, Loren Gelhaar, Robert Bright Jr., Howard Coffman. Lawyers: Boyer Garrelts Rea Snyder Witnesses: Hedgcock Humke Class History August 28, 1959, was the day that began many pleasant memories and experiences for the class of 1963 as we entered the doors of CCHS. On our first day as timid little freshmen we elected for our temporary officers Myron Marlett, president; Jane McDaniel, secretary-treasurer; and Judy Boyer, student council representative. Later we chose Lee Derks, president; Myron Marlett, vice-president; Jane McDaniel, secretary-treasurer; and Judy Boyer, student council representative, to lead us through the year. Judy Boyer represented our class on the junior-varsity cheerleading squad, and Barbara Garrelts and Larry Whistler were the freshmen attendants at the Sweetheart Ball. During our freshmen year we failed to gain any new students, but Julie Maier, Betty Rhodes, and Leland Seaver moved away. We successfully passed all challenges hurled at us by the upperclassmen and advanced to the second year of our high school education. Our chosen leaders for our sophomore year were Mary Ann Sullivan, president; Dave Laffey, vice-president; Carol Keller, secretary-treasurer; and Jane Copelan, student council representative. We were more active during our sophomore year as we sponsored a car wash and a May dance. Mary Ann Sullivan and Myron Marlett were the royal couple for the dance. Evelyn Green and Gary Wells were attendants to the Queen of the Sweetheart Ball, and Judy Boyer, Jane Copelan, and Barbara Garrelts were elected to cheer for the Little Blue. Mary Ann Sullivan was the only class member to be elected to the National Honor Society. As sophomores we learned the pronunciation of scientific terms from Mr. Bornman. During our sophomore year we lost Georgia Covert, Larry Ellefritz, Glenda Hale, Earl McHugh, Russell Phillips, Jayne Plumley, and Larry Whistler, while we gained Roy Wright, Caroline Cline, and Wilma Katzenburger. In the fall of 1961 we found that we shouldered the responsibilities and activities of upperclassmen. The officers for this important year were Myron Marlett, president; Bob Galloway, vice-president; Barbara Garrelts, secretary; Jane McDaniel, treasurer; and Jane Copelan, student council representative. Our biggest money-making project was a luncheon for those who attended the Teachers’ Institute. It was the first project of this type, and it proved to be a hugh success. Our class discovered its hidden talent when the play, The Remarkable Incident at Carson's Corners, was presented under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Priddy. The junior class was well-represented in the Homecoming court by Judy Boyer, Jane Copelan, and Barbara Garrelts. The attendants at the Sweetheart Ball were Jane McDaniel and Don Snyder. As usual the class rings were received with enthusiasm and some were lost with even more enthusiasm. Paris provided the setting for our enchanting Junior-Senior prom and the gym was decorated to represent a Parisian garden. The Eiffel Tower in the center of the gym reached up to the silver star- studded sky. Sidewalk cafes were featured, and a flower vendor's cart added to the atmosphere. Tiny Biggs and his band furnished the music for dancing. The stage was transformed into a garden where Barbara Garrelts and Myron Marlett were crowned queen and king. Judy Boyer and Dave Laffey were first attendants and second attendants were Linda Bell and Don Snyder. Varsity cheerleaders from the junior class were Judy Boyer and Jane Copelan, with Barbara Garrelts as alternate. Members of the junior class elected to the National Honor Society were Jane Copelan, Myron Marlett, Jane McDaniel, and Joyce Rand. Myron Marlett and Jane Copelan were chosen to represent CCHS at Boys' State and Girls' State, respectively. Alternates selected were Jim Johnson and Jane McDaniel. In order to become better prepared for our future (being housewives, janitors, ditch diggers, etc.) we wrote research papers for Miss Allison. During our junior year we gained Pam Comstock, Duane Webster, and Gary Van Beck and lost David Matthaidess, Wilma Katzenburger, Nancy Meyer, Velva Jean Thomas, and Jean Malloy. Officers chosen for the final year at CCHS were Dave Laffey, president; Gary Wells, vice- president; Athena Cole, secretary, Sally Naylor, treasurer; and Connie Schone, student council representative. Judy Boyer was elected by the student body to reign over Homecoming activities and Barbara Garrelts and Nancy Eichhorn were members of the court. Varsity cheerleaders from the senior class were Jane Copelan, Judy Boyer, and Barbara Garrelts. Jane Copelan and Jerry Smith were the queen and king of the Sweetheart Ball, and Connie Schone and Mike Rea were their senior attendants. Myron Marlett was elected Student Council President. Jane Copelan was editor of the Blue Hi-Lites. Nancy Eichhorn was editor of the Carthaginian. Jane McDaniel was elected GAA president. Carol Keller was elected Band president. Mike Rea was elected C-Club president. Evelyn Green was elected FHA president. Jane McDaniel was elected Honor Society president. Lee Derks was elected FFA president. The recipients of the DAR and SAR awards were Jane Copelan and Dave Laffey. Ruth Ann Walton received the Betty Crocker Homemaker award, and Barbara Garrelts won the Crisco award. Five members of the class won the Illinois State Scholarship. They were Judy Boyer, Lee Derks, Jim Johnson, Dave Laffey, and Jane McDaniel Members of the class elected to the National Honor Society were Dave Laffey, Barbara Garrelts, Judy Boyer, Jim Johnson, Darlene Wachtendorf, Athena Cole, Nancy Eichhorn, Dixie Huls, and Sally Naylor. During our last year at CCHS, we gained Margie Wetzel and David Pettit, and we lost Marilyn Meyers. The Christmas dance, which was sponsored by the senior class, proved to be enjoyable to all who attended. Class members were the nucleus of the band and choruses, all of which received superior ratings at state contest. Jane McDaniel represented CCHS in the All State Chorus. The senior class play, The Mouse That Roared, which was directed by Mrs. Lee Huston, was a success. So our four short years at CCHS have come to a close. Although our years were marked with disappointments as well as happiness, we were able to take them in stride and rise above the situation. Thus, with diplomas in hand, we close the doors of CCHS only to open new, more challenging ones in the future.
