Lawyers: Brodie Hendren Mustain Witnesses: Hedgecock Schroeder CLASS OF ’62 HISTORY We, the Senior Class of 1962, entered the halls of CCHS for the first time in August of 1958. It did not take long for our class of 81 members to learn that we were just green little worms and to the seniors we would squirm. Our first day as new members of CCHS, we elected our temporary class officers. Randy Reu became our first president and Terry Sherer our Vice-President. Later that year we elected permanent officers. President was Phil Hartweg, Vice-Pres. was Randy Reu, Sec.-Treas. Diana Priddy, and Student Council Representative Steve Brodie. During our freshmen year we gained three new students, Ivan Hurt, Linda Copelan, Wanda Hillyer. We lost Sherry Franks, Richard Kern, Margie Bishop, Margaret Houghes, and Ronnie Whistler. For a money making project we sold programs at football games. The only dance we sponsored was a May Day Dance and Phil Hartweg and Diana Priddy were chosen May King and Queen. Our attendants at the Sweetheart Ball were Randy Reu and Linda Copelan. The only cheerleader elected from our class was Linda Hibbard. Being underlings, we apparently didn't do any outstanding or important things, and what we did was over-shadowed by the upperclassmen. In the Fall of 1959 we became sophomores, and it was at this time that we began to leave a permanent imprint on CCHS. Once again we elected class officers: Bob Wildrick, President; Diana Priddy, Vice-President; Linda Naylor, Secretary-Treasurer, and Joe Dion Student Council Representative. During our sophomore year we lost Wanda Hillyer, Betty Dorothy, Oscar Casley, and Merlin Seavers; and we gained Ruth Taylor and Bill Harwood. Our money making project included a penny carnival which was a huge success. Our attendants at the Sweetheart Ball were Judy Welch and Bob Wildrick. Junior varsity cheerleaders from our class included Linda Hibbard, Judy Plumley, Judy Bratz, Sharon Wemhoner, and Judy Welch. Margaret Corbridge and Alice Dittmer were selected for Honor Society, and Phil Hartweg and Alice Dittmer were chosen as Sophomore Good Citizens. As sophomores we learned to always ask why by taking geometry under Miss Davidson. The biology kids will long remember the cut-up worms and fish, and none of us will ever forget the great Julius Caesar. As time went on we gradually progressed to what is known as the Juniors. Chosen to lead our jolly class were Joe Dion, President; Randy Reu, Vice-President; Judy Welch, Secretary-Treasurer, Diana Priddy, and Student Council Rep. Bob Wildrick. During our junior year we gained Janice King, Winnard Gann, and we lost Bill Harwood, Jerry Sargent, Colin Kelly, Ed Backer, and Judy Boss. Our class was honored to have Sue Habben as an attendant in the Homecoming court. Our attend- ants at the Sweetheart Ball were Joe Dion and Sara Geissler. Varsity cheerleaders were Linda Hibbard and Judy Welch. Honor society members chosen from our class were Linda Naylor, Harold Merritt, and Linda Copelan. Junior Good Citizens were Linda Copelan and Mike McNally. It was discovered early in November that our class contained a number of Thespians, and our class play Lute Song proved to be a huge success, directed by Jan Mason, a Carthage College student. The great day finally arrived, the day we ordered our class rings. The rings arrived in December amid joyous shouts of enthusiasm. The biggest event of the junior year was the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme, Stairway to the Stars was expressed in beautiful shades of blue, pink, and silver. The center of attraction was the stage which contained a long winding stairway leading to the stars. One corner of the gym contained a tiny wishing well and another contained an astrologer. Crowned King and Queen were Joe Dion and Sue Habben. First attendants were Phil Hartweg and Judy Bratz and Second attendants were Steve Brodie and Linda Copelan. Joe Dion went to Boys' State and Linda Copelan went to Girls' State. Honor Society members chosen from our class were Linda Naylor, Harold Merritt, and Linda Copelan, and Junior Good Citizens were Mike McNally and Linda Copelan. Mr. Humke and Miss Allison were our two new teachers that year. We all learned to live chemistry. At long last we became seniors. We were finally the leaders at C.C.H. S.; and, no doubt, we all became somewhat conceited. Officers chosen for our last year were Joe Dion, president; Phil Hartweg, vice-president; Judy Bratz, secretary; Jane Hendren, treasurer; and Bob Wildrick, student council representative. During our last year at C. C. H. S. we gained Charles Garard and we lost Bill Riley, Carol Huls, and Mary Scott. Sue Habben was Homecoming Queen, and Sharon Wemhoner was her first attendant. Varsity cheerleaders from the senior class were Linda Hibbard, Sharon Wemhoner, and Judy Welch. Linda Hibbard and Steve Brodie were queen and king of the Sweetheart Ball, and Phil Hartweg and Judy Bratz were their attendants. Alice Dittmer was editor of the Blue Hi-Lites. Jane Hendren was editor of the Carthaginian. Randy Reu was elected Student Council President. Steve Brodie was elected F.F.A. president. Marilyn Larson was elected G.A.A. president. Terry Sherer was elected Thespian president. Byron Humke was elected Band president. Rodney Rothert was elected C-Club president. Linda Copelan was elected F. H.A. president. Phil Hartweg received the S.A.R. award and Linda Naylor received the D. A.R. award. Judy Welch received the Betty Crocker Homemaker Award. During our senior year members of our class made some outstanding accomplishments. For the first time in the history of the Hancock County Basketball Tournament three boys from the same school made the All-County Team. These boys were our own Phil Aleshire, Joe Dion, and Bob Wildrick. Also, we were quite proud to have ten members of our class win A.C.T. scholarships, They were Steve Brodie, Margaret Corbridge, Alice Dittmer, Sondra Mustain, Linda Naylor, Byron Humke, Fred Ranck, Bob Wildrick, Randy Reu, and Linda Copelan. For money making project we sold magazines in the fall. Those winning prizes for selling the most were Harold Merritt, Sharon Faulkner, Randy Reu, and Jane Hendren. In the spring Rodney Rothert set many records in track and became the best track athlete in C. C. H. S. history. He was one of Illinois' top high jumpers. The annual Christmas Dance, which was a huge success, was sponsored by our class. Beautiful trees and lights enhanced the gymnasium. One of our big thrills, of course, was receiving our senior pictures. As in our junior year we presented a very successful class play, BERKELEY SQUARE. We owe a lot to our directors, Dave Werner and Kris Romeis. Those members from our class chosen for the Honor Society were Randy Reu, Joe Dion, Bob Wildrick, Dottie Wright, Sharon Wilson, and Janice King. Our most rewarding and final year at C. C.H.S. was highlighted by our trip to Kirkwood Lodge. Fifty-four seniors went on the trip, and each and every one of them will long remember it. And so our four short years at C. C.H.S. have come to a close. We are extremely proud of our class, and we are sure that we will long be remembered in the halls of Carthage Community High School.
