CLASS PROPHECY CLASS MOTTO-WORK WELL DONE NEVER NEEDS DOING OVER CLASS COLORS-LAVENDER AND WHITE CLASS FLOWER-ORCHID As the summer of 1970 is just beginning, we find ourselves back in the good home town of Carthage. With nothing specific planned we begin looking for some source of entertainment. We are delighted when we hear that the world famous Merritt and Neill circus is honoring Carthage with a performance. It is a source of pride to our class of “60” that Don and Keith have become such renowned personalities. We arrive at the circus grounds just as Opal Burling is pounding the final stake for the big tent. As we walk down the midway, we see the barker, Karen Rosenboom, waving a cane franti- cally. Coming closer we hear her say, “Step right up and see the super-intellect in action. On further investigation, we find this attraction to be Dr. William Mustain. Later, we see two men watering elephants behind a tent, who turn out to be Darrell Hartweg, chief waterboy, and his assistant, Craig Pancake. On down the way we pass Terry Henderson, who is busy knocking down milk bottles, and Marion Jackson, who is plinking away at the shooting gallery. Since there is plenty of time, we decide to stroll around and see die side-shows. Who knows? We might meet some of our other classmates of “60.” Sure enough, as we approach a gayly decorated booth, we see Nancy (Bubbles) Ancelet doing her famous bubble dance. On down the line we find Butch in a booth titled Brandon’s Magic Show, mystifying a large crowd with his trick of separating carbon tet and alcohol. Just a step further are Donna Thompson and Kyra Corbridge doing an astounding juggling act. ____ While we stand gazing in awe Mary Freeman rushes up and worriedly inquires if anyone knows where Joyce Fry is. When she sees our inquiring expressions, she hastily explains that she is the circus’s horse trainer, and one of her performers has injured a leg. Joyce is the veterinarian who travels with the circus. After Mary hurries off, we move on and discover Joyce Prior doing her snake charming act with Connie Ufkes doing an accompanying snake dance. Tom Brown is exhibiting his strength as Strong Man. We are amazed to find Mary Ann Talbott as the Fat Lady. She explains that she consented to fill this expansive position only because of the Insistance of the side-show manager, Loren Bivens. Incidentally, Loren’s wife and assistant manager is the girl we all remember as Jo Anne Dickinson. Our attention is then drawn to a small group gathered behind the clowns’ tent. We are invited to join diem by Bev Dean, who Is the Dean of Clowns. Here, we also meet Keith Bentzinger, Janice Galloway, Bev Faulkner, and David Feagans. After a short chat, we find that Keith is monkey baby sitter for the circus and Janice keeps all the circus records and books up to date. Bev is manager of the fun house and David is head tent-lifter. As we leave this little reunion, we are attracted by a tempting aroma. We follow our noses and find ourselves face to face with Darwin Backer selling Backer’s Circus Rolls. “Take a look into your future,” someone cries and we recognize the voice as Frances Barclay’s, the fortune teller. Diana Bryden has just had her fortune told and she informs us that Frances is married and her name is no longer Barclay. Her kids and husband, Ed. do a yoga act. We hear cries of exclamation across the midway, so we hurry to see what the excitement is. Vernie Wear is doing his astonishing fire-eating act. Loren Smith, the sword swallower, tells us that Vernie is a wonderful performer but he is always taking a break and going out for fire- water. Loren also puts us up to date on Jerry Wilhite. He is the trainer of a new exotic bird, a “jail-bird.” Bonnie Johnson and John Kipling are just going into the tunnel of love when the owners of the Merritt and Neill Circus enter the Big Top. We rush and buy our tickets from the ticket saleswoman, Judy Ancelet, and frantically try to find a seat in the packed tent. Finally we locate a seat and are surprised to find Mrs. Neill and Mrs. Jones, whom we remember as Darlene and Pat, seated just behind us with all children thoroughly enjoying the circus. Jim Maier, band leader, strikes up the band and the show is under way. We notice that Bill Reuck has given up the French horn to play the bass drum. Byron Geissler, the ringmaster, announces the opening performance which is a daredevil driving exhibition by Terry Newell and Rodney Etter. Norman Kimmel and his wife, who was Marian Johnson when in high school, have just arrived late for the performance. Next, we have two fine and graceful tightrope walkers, Jane McNally and Larry Wilcox. Donna Murphy and Jearlyn Lunt enter on stately white horses and do an act of bareback riding. Ronnie and Dixie of the“Flying Warners” prepare for their aerial act. Lyndon Graham and Richard Linson are busy cleaning up with their popcorn and cotton-candy concessions. Janet Daugherty, cigarette girl, and Mary Ann Ufkes, with her lemonade selling are also busy. Paul Hendren was about to perform his high dive into a wet washrag, but chickened out when he heard that Bob Hibbard, his assistant, forgot to wet the cloth. To substitute for Paul’s performance. Bill Duncan and his Highdiving Duncanaires did an impromptu act. All eyes are fastened on the ringmaster as he describes the spine-chilling lion act which is next. We are all shocked when we see the lions enter with their trainer, who is none other than Judy Dean. Our amazement increases when we see “Startling Stan Twaddle bravely put his head into the lion’s mouth. For the next act, we sit back and relax a little as we watch the Bouncing Batch out there flopping around on a trampoline. They consist of: Harry Scanlan, Roberta (Bobby) Huett, Bob Walton, and Janet Huls. Janet Nicholas then fascinates the audience with a toe dance on horseback and Bonnie Phillips does some tight-rope acrobatics. A peanut vender, Eugene Earls, and a balloon salesman, Ted Smalley, come around and the Neills and Jones give them a boost in their business. We are distracted by a very unusual sound and soon discover that it is made by the Laughing Hyenas trained by the well-qualified Bob Grove. Following Bob and his hyenas comes Joyce Beaver with her performing Eager Beavers. Suddenly the tent is rocked with laughter as a clown, Tony Ruggles, hurries around the ring pushing a baby buggy in which Sandra Schroder is peacefully slumbering. As we file out of the crowded tent, we suddenly realize that we have seen or heard about each member of our class, and weknowthat the CCHS Class of “60,” with its unusual talents, will never be forgotten. I, Jerry “Willy” Wilhite, will all my talents to the class of ’61; they’ll be needing them next year. We, the Senior Class of 1960, do will and bequeath to the Freshman Class our “leftover students,” our good grades, our good spirits--that is beer, whisky, and rye--and our chewing gum left on the seats of every desk. We, the Senior Class of 1960, do will and bequeath to the Sophomore Class our Sunday School books, our choir robes, our perfect attendance at church records, our good behavior medals, our hymnals, and our rusty halos in hopes that they can polish them up. We, die Senior Class of 1960, do will and bequeath to the Junior Class our leftover magazine subscriptions, leftover candy wrappers, leftover play tickets, leftover baked goods, our good looks, charm, personality, and determination to make as big a success as we have. We, the Senior Class of 1960, do will and bequeath to Mr. Delabar and our Beloved Teachers all our cooperation which we failed to give; and we are sorry there weren’t more of us like D. H„ W. M., and J. D., but we didn’t want you to get too enthused about this thing called “larnin . This will was drawn up by Lawyers Warner and Schroder.
