Class Prophecy SCENE: Plumley’s living room in the year 1973. Darrell is sitting on the couch avidly perusing a book. Virginia enters. VIRGINIA: Look, I found one of our old yearbooks. I can’t remember very many of these people. DARRELL: Blackie Allison married JoAnne Dickinson. He went to work with her father and be- came a painter. They were recently assigned to paint the White House, and while they were doing it, Blackie fell into a bucket of white paint -- now they call him “Whitey.” VIRGINIA: Didn't Blackie run around with Jim Derks? I believe Jim is the English professor at Ferris University. Jim never married because Norene Harrell ditched him to marry Gerald Fink, who is now Head Ping Pong Coach at Carthage High. Norene is assistant to the assistant P. E. teacher at the same schooL DARRELL: That reminds me of her high school friend, Loretta Brodie. Loretta married business tycoon Gunner Nelson, and they have a son who is nearly seven feet tall, and he’s only four years old. VIRGINIA: This is fun; let's go through the whole yearbook and see if we can remember everyone and if we know what they are doing. DARRELL: Here’s Reverend Ronald Freeman. After Ron divorced his third wife, he decided to reform and become a Baptist minister. He is noted for his “soothing sermons.” By the time he’s finished, the whole congregation is usually soothed and are sound asleep. VIRGINIA: I hear that Ronnie’s old friend, Jim Metternich, won the Indianapolis Speedway Race last month. Jim’s lawyer, John Naylor, has become famous for handling all of Jim’s divorce cases. Jim seems to like his cars better than his wives. DARRELL: Bob Henderson designed the first rocket ship to carry man to the moon. He even tried it out. There was only one small defect. He can’t get back. VIRGINIA: Bob’s old flame, Janet Lovell, is Dean of Men at Yale. She always did have a fancy for college boys. DARRELL: Speaking of Janets, Janet Drew’s latest recording of‘T Ran Out of Tees,” which was inspired by her golfing husband, Bobb Austin, is a big hit. It seems that Mr. Hanson’s pro- phecy came true, Bobb and Janet were married a month after school was out. VIRGINIA: Did you know that Roger Tweedt owns a string of bowling alleys and has made a fortune on his invention, the Tweedty Bowling Ball Washer? It seems he converted an old May tag Washing Machine into his Tweedty Bowling Ball Washer. DARRELL: Dick Faulkner was an instructor in one of Tweedt’s bowling alleys. Then he got his fingers stuck in a ball and was dragged to death. VIRGINIA: For entertainment in the bowling alley, Donna Fecht does a bubble dance. Bud Wear is her favorite bubble buster. Bud’s favorite song is “I’m Forever Chasing Bubbles.” DARRELL: Janice Dowdall has never married. I hear she is running a kennel for strays. VIRGINIA; Speaking of Janice, do you know what happened to Mary Lee Glose? DARRELL: She’s still writing to Ronnie Henderson. It seems that his plane is always up in the air. If it doesn’t hurry up and land, they’re going to miss the boat. VIRGINIA: I hear Charles Shumate is now working in Larry Wilson’s Luscious Spaghetti Factory. He is chief noodle counter. Chuck has really taken advantage of his high school math. DARRELL: I guess Judy Hoing and Mary Klein drill holes through the centers of the noodles. VIRGINIA: It seems that Wilson’s Spaghetti Factory has claimed several of our classmates. DARRELL: The critics in the newspaper the other evening really raved about Celia Lionberger and Nancy Montgomery’s performances in their new ballet at David Tanner’s famous Club 66. Their instructor is the famous ballet teacher, Jeff Clark. I wonder if Jeff has changed from Fords to Cadillacs yet. VIRGINIA: Remember Don Smith and Ed Owens? They joined the Navy to see the world and have been in the Great Lakes ever since. DARRELL: I hear their old buddy, Jim Frey, now owns all of the Keokuk waterfront hotels. Jim has certainly taken a new lease on life, hasn't he. VIRGINIA; Did you know that Carol O'Connell and Dean Lawson and their four children are celebrating their anniversary next week? They’ve been married for sixteen years. DARRELL: Do you remember Clifford Huls? He now owns a string of race horses and has one of the largest stables in the State. Tom Harrington, our old Student Council president, is chief scooper. VIRGINIA: George Gronewold now owns the world’s largest whiskey factory. No one knows how much George is worth, because no one can get him sobered up long enough to find out. At first George didn’t make too much money, because his head salesman. Bob Smothers, was drinking up all the profits. DARRELL: It seems that Doris Etter owns a whole string of gambling casinos. Bonnie Vance is in charge of the one in Las Vegas. VIRGINIA: Kathy Freeman, Reva Kelly, and Mary Lovell Rockhold are now appearing in New York as the Lumbago Sisters. Their act is really killing. DARRELL: Ora Jackson has taken over Oral Robert’s program. It’s too bad Ora can’t heal him- self. VIRGINIA: Frank Hasten is now a four-star general in the Army. He got a purple heart for de- stroying the ranks of the purple people eaters. DARRELL: Marilyn Minor and her husband, Larry Huls, have a trained seal act with Ringling Brothers Circus. VIRGINIA: Ken Ufkes owns eight farms near Basco. Every winter Ken goes to live in his pent- house on the French Riviera. His butler, Stan Prox, and his maid, Bernice Scheuermann, also go with him. DARRELL: Esther Huls and Peg White both hold very important positions in a sardine factory. They close the fishes' eyes before they put them in the cans. VIRGINIA: Leona Martens and her husband, Dick Mapes own a pea farm and they have ten little peapickers of their own. DARRELL: Bob Stoneking and his wife, Genelle Magin are missionaries in the darkest part of Africa. They seem to like the little people. VIRGINIA: Well, our classmates have done very well for themselves, but I wouldn’t want to change places with any of them, because I like living on Mars.
