Carthage did not go untouched by the latest fashion trends. Punk was a popular theme, associated with shorter, spiky hair and more non-conformist attire than the usual Carthage College prep look. Even though it was a mild winter, leg warmers, in all kinds of colors and sizes became quite the rage. A critic of this style was Pastor Steve Samuelson who said uIt looks like theylre wearing their socks on the outside of their pants. The saying goes as the economy rises. so do the hemlines. This was evidenced by multi-color minitskirts and dresses seen on campus. Slowly but surely the na- tional economy under President Reagan plodded its way out of its doldrums so too did fashion at Carthage College become a little more exciting. ' Carthage College . . . In the fall of 1962, three-hundred pioneering freshmen arrived at Car- thagels brand-new - and still very muddy -- Kenosha campusv They were the entire student body here that year, while the mother school in the more rural Carthage. Illinois, continued with a full four-year program. A majority of the approximately thirty faculty and administrators on the Wisconsin cam- pus that year had moved up from the II- linois campus. though the remaining students and faculty didnlt move up urt- til 1964. .1 - a '1- trains... During that first school year of 1962-63, the campus was notably clifw ferent from the Carthage we see today. Nearly everything was centered in The Library-AuditoriumeScience building. with not only all classrooms and the Library there. but also twice-weekly chapel in the Wartburg Auditorium, faculty offices, administrative offices 0n the Library's second floor. music. art. and theater rooms, and even some run- ning and PE classes in the wide base- ment hallway. 1n the Student Center, v ytg I only one cafeteria was used for dining, the other was reserved for all social ac- tivities and many Physical Education events. Housing was limited to one wing of Denhart tdormitory project Al and one wing of Johnson tthen called Cen- tral Hall - Dormitory project Bl. Pastor Dudley Riggle, who was full- time campus pastor at that time, recalls that llthere was a strong sense of com- munity Faculty and students were all together much more for both academic and social activities? 20 Years of Growth in Kenosha Clearly. the size and appearance of Carthage has changed significantly in the past twenty years. FulI-time enroll- ment has over tripled, for example, in the 1982-33 enrollment of 950. The ad- dition of two more residence halls, Lentz Hall. the Johnson Art Center, the Natatorium, and Finally Siebert Chapel dedicated in 1976, has notably expand- ed the facilities available to students. Assistant to the President. Alan Ander- son. who was Director of Admissions in 1962-63, notes that the school has also advanced Financially. It is now valued at over $40 million. with a debt of only about $3 million. In addition, the en- dowment has increased from $600,000 in the early 1960's to over $10 million. The move was a tremendous adven- ture, Anderson summarized, tta less than a life-time experience. 91 Food Service Makes Changes g 32W To keep our daily routine from get- ting too tedious, Ted Nicholson impor- tuned some changes in cafeteria eating. Getting the day off to a good start was the supply of cereals to choose from, in- cluding that all-time favorite, Captain Crunch. At the next meal. the most drastic change of cafeteria style eating was implemented a that of self-serve. No longer did the men automatically get a hearty helping. while the women suffered with microscopic servings. Everyone could tand ditD take as much as they wanted. This also helped cut down on those embarrassing uback for seconds't trips. The ali-new hamburger bar was another welcome change in the lunch-tirne menu. Dinner, again, was self-serve style, with a choice of two en- trees. Our undying gratitude is extend- ed to Ted for his innovation and never ending struggie to keep our palates stimulated. 93 94 Whether one chooses Greek life or not, participating in rush is a great way to meet new people, make new friends, and possibly join a sisterhood or brotherhood which brings fun, friend- ship, and good times. Every fall and spring semester each sorority and fraternity has a rush week where rushees attend the parties given by the various organizations and then decide whether or not to pledge one of the organizations. After rush, is over, individuals who decide to join one of the sororities or fraternities must sue- cessfully complete a pledging period where he or she learns about the organization and proves his 01' her trustworthiness to the group. Pledges have been known to: carry folders, hats, brown purses. and yellow roses with them wherever they go; par- ticipate in line-ups or questioning. where they are tested on their knowledge of the organization; sing songs and do kick-lines late at night: at- tend or give parties with the other pledges and actives; wear tpledge bibs at meals; and greet active members. Carthage currently has four active social sororities and five social frater- nities on campus entitled: Kappa Chi Omega, Pi Theta, Sigma Alpha Chi, Kappa Phi Eta, Tau Sigma Chi, Delta Omega Nu, Beta Phi Epsilon, Tau Sigma Phi, and Tau Delta Psi. The team started their season with many new players; and thust the young team had to learn to work together and gain ex- perience. Because the team was small, having only eight members instead of the usual twelve, substitutions during the matches were minimal. Consequent- ly, the players battled on the courts con- tinuously with no relief from additional players. In spite of all these difficulties, the Carthage volleyball team was very competitive. Although they may have lost many games, these games were close with many long volleys. Coach Mizerka comments, The team members worked hard. never com- plained. always went into their games with the idea of giving their best effort and were a team on and off the court? She further commented, llthe season was successful in that the players built a solid learn. Accordingly, the team has high potential for a successful season. at least in terms of a good season record, nextyear. 4N: . . Ill! ft .4. a .53: .;...,.... . 128 129 .1. Left 10 Right. Back Row. Coach Glaess Comments, Ml'he team would always start the game with the idea of doing its best. Disappointedly. the team hnished their season with a 2- 1 1 record and two ties. Composing the team were six seniors, two juniors. five sophomores, and five freshmen. Unusually, the team wel- eomed two new women members, Lori tVogU Bowie and Sherri Berg. AlthOugh there have been a few women members on the team in the past, the majority of the soccer teams have been composed of all male members. Bicap- tains for the team were Bob Moore and Jim Moore with the latter also being voted most valuable player. 0 l. Karen Cutter and Sue Spences placing third in doubles, and Sue Spencer placing sixth in singles. Carthage women finished the tournament successfully in second plaCe. uOverall the team impmved their game through better techniques and experience. comments Coach Zolakar. With the loss of four starters. the womcrfs basketball team began their season as a relatively new team. Due 10 a difficult schedule and several injuries. the team disappoinlcdly ended their season with a 6-20 recordA However. through the season. the basketball team as a whole, has developed plenty of talent and experience for ncxt year. Special honors went to Ellen O'Connor as leading scorer and reboundcr. She was also voted to second team all conference. MeIfs Track Team 138 Placing seventh in conference. the Cut - thagc men's track team had a rewarding season. Key injuries at the wrong times were perhaps the team's only misfortune. Disregarding these injuries. the track team would most likely have achieved a very high standing. Highlighting the track season was the win in the private school state meet.
