But long or short, good or bad, the times march on. Carthage holds many memories for all of us. The Drfnwood this year wants to share those memories: trips to Gettysburg and to the Lake , flings on roofs and jounts underground, late night deadlines and early morning rendevouzs. Registration; standing in long lines, contemplating futures and sometimes regretting pasts. Hoping that this iinal effort will produce the desired results. The system has changed. Now those with seventy-six credits or more can sign-up earlier than the other poor innocents. This, another effort to make Lentz Hall a less hectic place On Registration Day. The day brought nice weather. hot brats and polka music by Dr. Chell and his cohorts. The Swing Choir also performed with its usual charm and warmth. Overall the weekend was a big success. 20 tram .- . 57-3 3K t Kn. rm Spoon River Anthology Feeling that this year's students wen: best at oral interpretation, and also had musical talent, Director T. Shandy Holland chose Spoon River Anthology for the fall performance at Wartburg Auditorium. Featuring nine Carthage actors and actresses and two guitarists, the musical developed characterization techniques because each player had more than one role. The play opened November 9, and was a great succesa. John Jensen showed great promise as did the other cast members including; Pam Crone, Ronald Heinz. Kathleen Hill, Denise Langlois, Brian Mierow, Jon Stansfield. Carthage- Thc place; home to many. institution to some, Carthage to all. Renecting on his career at Carthage, Pastor Engen feels the years Ithave been enriching and rewarding They have been years of personal growth and a good deal of changefa Pastor Engen arrived at Carthage in the fall of 1971 and was ordained in the fall of the following year. ItMy ordination is a great memory for me because it took place on Campus, in Wartburg Auditorium. at our Sunday service. Pastor Riggle was the preacher and many students and faculty members participated. I was over- whelmed by the love and the support of the community? While serving as Associate Campus Pastor, Rick Engen was also an in- structor in the Religion Department. Of this posistien, he says, ttI really enjoy working with students. He feels his greatest qualifica- tion for his work here is that he nenjoys listening to and communi- cating with people and that his ttbest memories will be of people, significant relationships with both students and staff. I consider it a privilege to have served as one of the campus pastors to Carthage students. It has been a joy to celebrate and attempt to live out the faith with these people. I am particularly grateful that I have had this eight year working relationship with Pastor Riggle. Concerning his new parish, Pastor Engen has mixed emotions. ttWhile I will miss Carthage very much, at the same time I am excited about this new challenge. Since I came to Carthage right out of seminary. this will be my First full-time parish experience. The congregation I will be serving is quite small and seems to have a lot of vitality and creativity. We at Carthage. wish to thank Pastor Engen for all the work he has done here over the years. We wiil miss him. but we wish him well as he goes to Waukesha. We know that his faith and energy will enrich any work that he accepts. 33 Cafeteria Food fights aren't very common but even Carthage had its day. Cutlets and potatoes flew overhead as students took cover or made quick exit. But the cafeteria should be noted for all its contributions to the community. Besides going out of their way to provide meals for floor cals'X which promote floor unity and student participation. the cafeteria also holds banquets for many different interest groups. Ted Nicholson and his staff have tried hard to give us their best and should be congratulated. Carthage- Pcoplc: students, administration, faculty, . . .. .l staff, alumni. People , 5' . J A THLETICS 56 . m The 1978 football season proved a disappointing one for the Redmen. The young team. with only four seniors on the roster, faced many tough foes. But despite a season record of 1-8, the squad showed promises of future talent. Both the coaches and the returning lettermen are looking forward to an improved season in 1979. 1938 Roster: Tom Andersen Brice Arndt Dan Ausloos Jim Barks Dave Blakeski Art Borowic Todd Brigman Dennis Busscn Tim Casper Dave Dobbcck Mike Dorman Tony Edmonds Jeff Elverman Matt Feslar Fred Fosterling J im Fox Steve Ganzel Mike Gentile Phil Green Paul Groskiewicz Jim lncndino Larry Ivy Cecil Jennings Curt Karas Rick Kehr Patrick Koepp Scott Krajniak Chuck Krey Jack Larson Mitch Lucie James Marten Steve McCracken Marlin Molinaro ...... g' g I Mike Monaco Mark 01Connor Joel Petersen Ray Pettcnuzzo Paul Petty Jeff Postlewaite Tim Potter Brigg Redcnius John Robinson Ross Robinson Tim Roets Scott Sabres Roger Scott Rob Shook Rich Simonovich Tim Suminski John Svendsen Tom Taylor Ray Thrclkcld Bob Tirkoff Bob Tuszynski Rick Vandcherf Tony Weber Vince Webster Ken Winans OTHERS: Mark Conforti Lucben Davis Bob Johnson Kevin Slamann Dave Contorno Brian Durr Bill Donclson Scott Sylvester Len Yuknis Ken Banicke Bill Anderson Pepe Barge Torn Jankovich Pele Appleton Steve Roberts a $62.55, '2 - :1 . . Although that's a drop of one place from last yeafs standings, Carthage looks like a strong contender for next year's title because there are only two graduating seniors: Scott Weber and David Kroll, With a few good prospects in this yearhs freshman crop, Carthage will have the attitude of a winner. Some outstanding meets this past year were run at Purdue and Olivet. The Purdue Invitational found Carthage in fifth place but ahead of Northwestern, Iowa, Louisville, Detroit and Valpraiso, all in the Big 10. Probably the best event of the year was at the Olivet Invitational where Carthage finished men in first, second, third. fourth, and fifth places-a perfect score of fifteen. 59 60 Soccer Team Members: Peter Nylen. Coach Harvey Glaess, who has personally supported the team in the past. says that without monetary support from Carthage College. there probably will not be a soccer team next year. Hopefully, someone will realize the potential of this organization and help fund their activities. 61 Volleyball Spikers were as impressive as ever this year as they reached the Midwest Tournament, held in Ohio November 17-18. Coach Mizerka, who has never had a team reach the championship match, was confident, as were the players. The Redwomen made it their first opponent, Northern, but were then beat by George Williams and then Lewis University. Lewis eventually ended up in second place, behind Dayton. With an overall record of 32-21-5, however, the Redwomen showed what theytrc made of. The loss of Seniors Sue Lynn, Cindy Schopper. and Val Ireland will hurt the team, but not t enough to make them any less of a threat next year. Carthage can look forward to t another successful year of Woments Volleyball. Team Members: Cheryl Layden, Val 1 Ireland. Sandy Burkhardt. Sally Konajeski, Judy Westerman. The high point of the season was the performance of Mast Valuable Player Mike Gardncrt unfortunately Mike and senior Rick Rank played their last season. Carthage has some new recruits but the future is still a blur. Crowd support was the big difference in this year's performance. Good cheerleaders, a great pep band. and support from students like the ttHumpers kept team spirits boosted and the mood excited. Members: Rick Rank, Steve Scott, Jim Nader, Dave Nelson. Dave Wensel. The championships were disappointing as the Redwomen fin- ished second behind a tough Platcville team, however they chalked-up three wins bringing their overall record to 19-5. Rugby hGive Blood-Play Rugby is the theme for Carthagets Rugby Club. The squad. consisting of twenty-Eive men with highly developed ttkiller instincts. had two good seasons this year. They play both in the fall and in the spring. Self-funcling as the team is. they seem to manage quite well. By selling t-shirts this year they made enough to cover the expenses of driving to away games, paying referees, and printing bulletin and team schedules. The money also helped pay for the traditional post game ubrawl. It seems that the home teams sponsor parties for the visitors after every match. This could be the reason for an increased interest in Rugby on Campus. It could very well be the sport, so sign up early! 93 ORGA NIZA TIONS Led by enthusiastic senators and executive board members Student Government was able to achieve a number of goals during the year. Improvement to the Carthage Campus was reflected by the Student Fund Drive that raised nearly $10,000 for the P.E.C., significant renovation to the College Center and Residence Halls. and the establishment of an Outdoor Wilderness Program. Other activities included Senate Committee Reforms, sponsorship of a Student Leadership Workshop, New Student Orientation Revision. and the rc-establishment of a firm foundation with the Administration.
