Operations ceased at Springfieid in June, 1869, with the institution $15,000 in debt. In December, 1869, the Board of Trustees met at Carthage, Illi- nois to consider the future of the college. The board had chosen Carthage as a meeting place because it was one of three cities offering the col- lege a home; the board decided to accept the best offer, which had come from Carthage.
