Rated among the top defensive teams in the nation, the Carthage Redmen wound up a successful football season with a 4576 slaughter of lflinois College, culminating a five-game winning streak. The Redmen had a mildly successful Season, dosing their opening three games and winning the last five by Iop-sided scores. Statistics indicate that their record Should have been far better than 5-3, as they out-stripped both Augustana and Principia in yards gained rushing and in defense. Good ball handling wasn't enough for the Carthage eleven in the early stages of the seasan, however, as Cen- tral Iowa, 3 new opponent, surprised them 25-7, Augie tripped them 18-15, and Principia kept their undefeated string intact 12-6. Three games of experience worked wonders for the Redmen as they finaFly fired up and blasted their next five opponents 178-12. Carthage rolled over Culver-Stock- ton 24-0, and then routed Wisconsin Tech 39-0 in a wild and wooly Hemecoming game that was p1ayed under Badger-Hrini conference free substitution rules. Then they- . produced the clasaic ot the season, a 51-6 slaughter of Central Missouri. Eureka tried using strategy on the Redmen, but it . backfired 19-0 and Carthage returned home for their final game of the season, humbling Illinois college of . Jacksonville 45-6. The Redmen had a rushing average of 347.5 vard's for the season as contrasted with their opponents' 132. They cut-smred their opponents 206-67. 1 l '! i e! a Manager: Roger Pederson HarryI Hobbs Mohan Chalbani ..a. ... :91 .LJ-L - IL-RJI R. Hilt, B. Nordengren, B. Versen, T. Langan, H. McWherrer, R. The outiook for next season is very optie mistic seeing that there were no sen- iors on the team and everyone is ex- pected back next year. Dick Prunty, freshman from Keokuk, Iowa, was the top Redman scorer with 332 points and a 16.6 point average for 20 games. He was followed by Rollie Swanson with 3?? points and Fred Imhoff with 285. One of the highlights of the season came when the Redmen played the Culver-Stockton Wildcats at Can- ton, M0,, using the professionai rules on an experimental basis. The Redmen took that game by a one point margin, 79-78, The Big Red had a 50096 with a 7-7 record going into the last six games, but lost five of these games. The first game by one point, one by two points, and two by eight points. Earfier in the season they dropped one by four points. With a few breaks! they could have ended with a better record.
