DEDICA TION J .aa WILFRED J. RUSHMAN His thirty-fourth year as a professional educator will be noted in September, 1968, as the supervising principal of our Carthage Central School District. Wilfred J. Rushman has devoted all thirty-four of those years to students of local school systems. The challenge and opportunity of working with young people were paramount considerations in Mr. Rushmanls choice of a career when, after his graduation from St. Lawrence in 1934, he came to West Carthage as coach, physical education instructor and classroom teacher. In 1944 he became principal of West Carthage Public Schools. Ever interested in ways and means of improving and expanding educational facilities, Mr. Rushman was one of the prime movers in bringing together thirty-two school districts into what is now the Carthage Central School District. In February 1954, he was appointed the district's first supervising principal, a position he has occupied continously since that time. His tasks in this capacity have never been easy, and doubtless would have defeated many a man less determined. To begin with, there was literally no schooli' for a large number of the students inherited by the new district. Mr. Rushman not only guided the district through that difficult formative period but also helped ease the growing pains that accompanied the planning, building and utilization of the district's then-new junior-senior high school and other new facilities in West Carthage and Natural Bridge. Significantly for those of us who are today's students in the school system administered by Mr. Rushman, he remains, after 34 years in education, an innovator-one who is eager to give expression to new and modern concepts and stances in education.
