THE I968 CARTHADIAN CARTHAGE CENTRAL JUNIOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CARTHAGE, NEW YORK VQLUME XI EDITOR'S NOTE Probably one of the most difficult tasks in putting together the 1968 Carthadian was to find an appropriate theme. Not only must the entire yearbook be constructed around the theme, but it must be something that the whole student body can appreciate and apply to themselves, for the content of the yearbook is about them. We chose time as our theme for the 1968 Carthadian because we felt that it was some- thing in which we all share a common interest. Time is essential to all of us in our own ways, whether it means getting to class on time, or keeping to the music, or timing a play just right. We have tried to present time at Carthage Central as we see it. To supplement our theme, we have taken a passage from the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible, the third chapter, verses 2-8. Although everyone may not be familiar with this passage, it does contain a few lines that we found particularly applicable to us, the student body. lt would only be right to open our yearbook with some symbol of time, so we have depicted, on the cover, an Aztec sun calendar. The 1968 Carthadian, then, is a way of expressing what time has meant to each of us. We think that for every student at Carthage Central, there is a time for . . . RUSHMAN His thirty-fourth year as a professional educator will be noted in September, 1968, as the supervising principal of our Carthage Central School District. Wilfred J. Rushman has devoted all thirty-four of those years to students of local school systems. The challenge and opportunity of working with young people were paramount considerations in Mr. Rushmanls choice of a career when, after his graduation from St. Lawrence in 1934, he came to West Carthage as coach, physical education instructor and classroom teacher. In 1944 he became principal of West Carthage Public Schools. Ever interested in ways and means of improving and expanding educational facilities, Mr. Rushman was one of the prime movers in bringing together thirty-two school districts into what is now the Carthage Central School District. In February 1954, he was appointed the district's first supervising principal, a position he has occupied continously since that time. His tasks in this capacity have never been easy, and doubtless would have defeated many a man less determined. To begin with, there was literally no schooli' for a large number of the students inherited by the new district. Mr. Rushman not only guided the district through that difficult formative period but also helped ease the growing pains that accompanied the planning, building and utilization of the district's then-new junior-senior high school and other new facilities in West Carthage and Natural Bridge. Significantly for those of us who are today's students in the school system administered by Mr. Rushman, he remains, after 34 years in education, an innovator-one who is eager to give expression to new and modern concepts and stances in education. He remains, too, one who first and foremost is dedicated to the student. We the staff of the Carthage Central School yearbook are proud to dedicate the 1968 Carthadian to . . . WILFRED J. A time to guide When describing the efforts of the Board of Educa- tion, it becomes difhcult not to seem maudlin. Their work in securing new schools for our district would impress any admirer of perseverance and inspiration. We, the students of Carthage Central School, are thankful for this. Under the leadership of this year's president, Lee T. Hirschey, the board has made great gains in curriculum development and commun- ity relations. MR. WILFRED J. The 1967 Carthage Central Comet football team ex- perienced a moderately successful season. Led by senior captain Dick Vanl-lorn, the gridders won three and lost All right, what happened to the ball? five. Victories came at the expense of Central Square, West Canada Valley and Holland Patent. The team was impress- ive early in the season, but the loss of key linemen through injuries hurt during the latter half ofthe campaign. Standouts in the backfield were quarterback Roger Han- sek and Pete Liberatos at fullback. Mike Powell and Brian Laneuville along with Captain VanHorn led the line charges. Coach Miller can look forward to a fine season in ,68 due to the fact that many returning sophomores and juniors gained valuable game experience this year. I'm coming as fast as I can. J. V. The varsity basketball team under the direction of Mr. Richard Rollins inished the season with a commendable record of eleven wins and eight losses. The cagers achieved double Wins over arch-rivals Augustinian Academy and Low- ville. The wide-open, fastbreaking type of game displayed by the hoopsters was exciting to the many students who supported this year's team. Scoring and rebounding honors in almost every game went to seniors Bill Siedlecki and Bob Nabewaniec. Donn Cole and Bill Ward also deserve credit for their performances. The future looks promising with six juniors returning next year. Where's that old school spirit? There 's that old school spirit. This is a pep rally? J. . BASKETBALL The J.V. basketballers, coached by Mr. Metcalf, ended the campaign with a five and thirteen slate. The little Comets were improved during the last half of the season, losing close games to many opponents and beating Lowville. The Freshmen team record was ten and four. Why doesn't somebody cheer? ...L f Coached by Miss Trimby, our cheerleading squad does an excellent job of creating en- thusiasm for athletic contests. Through hours of practice they make basketball and foot- ball games colorful events. Posters, made by these girls, announcing coming games, have become a familiar sight in our halls this year. Mr. Winters guided his matmen to a fifth place finish in the Frontier League and a seventh place in the League Tourna- ment. ln the Baldwinsville Invitational the team finished fifth with Mike Cook, Stan Ashcraft and Tim Tabolt grabbing second place honors. Lack of wrestlers to fill the lower weight classes was detrimental to the team all year. Ten or fifteen points were for- feited each match. Outstanding performers were Tabolt, Ashcraft, and Wayne Ferguson. There's something you don't see very often SKI TEAM The 1967-68 ski team under the able direc- tion of Mr. Goodspeed competed in four meets. Skiing in both the slalom and giant slalom, the team entered invitationals at Snow Ridge and Big Tupper. In the Section III meet at Old Forge the team finished sixth. VARSITY SWIM TEAM Led by co-captains Eric Wiley and Tom Luther, the Comet mermen compiled a record of four wins and eight losses. Lack of depth was evident in almost every meet this year. Capturing second and third places proved to be a greater task than actually winning races. Wiley, Luther, diver Steve Fargo and Bob Wiley were consistent winners. Things look bright in the future for C.C.S. swimming with only three senior lettermen on this year's squad. Freestylist Eric Wiley went on to win a sectional title and a second place in the intersectionals. VARSITY BASEBALL The 1967 varsity baseball team compiled a record of six wins, five losses and one tie. The tie was in an eight inning affair with Harrisville. Poor weather hampered the team early in the season and consequently arch-rival Lovvville was played only once. Pitchers Bill Ward and Dave Lins- truth turned in outstanding performances, both allowing less than three earned runs per game. Under Mr. Pierce the J.V. baseball team ended a successful year with a record of eight wins and four losses. Tony Dumaw and Randy Bishop were the team's standouts. TheSff'fP1aYef J. V. The team also competed in invitationals at Proctor of Utica and New Hartford. The highlight of the season was John Ricci's second place finish in the 880-yard run at the Section Ill meet. The 1967 cross country team, coached by Mr. Ronald Roggie, had a better-than-average season. ln their invitation- al meets they consistently finished in the upper half of the teams competing. S An A.F.S. student from Holland, an increasingly active American Field Service Student Committee, and a partici- pant in the Americans Abroad part of A.F.S. all contributed to the growing interest in this student scholarship program at Carthage Central. For six months of the 1967-68 school year, Frans tenBroeke of Apeldoorn, Holland, made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ferguson and family of Carthage. Mrs. Fer- guson, Frans, and Frans' American brother, Alan, are shown in the picture above. In its second year of active work, the A.F.S. Student Committee, at left, planned an American Field Service Day at Carthage Central. Membership in this club is open to any junior or senior who is interested in the American Field Service. For the first time in six years, a student from C.C.S. was chosen as a participant in the Americans Abroad program. Tom Rich spent the summer of 1967 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with Dr. and Mrs. Jose Thiago and family, pictured at the right. It is an espe- cially appropriate subject for the 1968 Carthadian, for stu- dents at Carthage Central have such a great opportunity to diversify, according to their individual interests. A student at C.C.S. can always find himself in his work, whether it's in the metal shop, the physics lab, the sewing room, or perhaps in mechanical drawing. If a student is looking for a field in which he has little or no training, he may choose one of the foreign languages from a well-balanced program. Majors in homemaking, art, music, shop, science and mathematics are offered. The voca- tional school is continuing to be a constant aid to students. On these two pages we have presented the classroom at C.C.S. pictorally as we see it, and more than that, as every- one experiences it.
