F ORE WORD Early this year the Carthadian staff began the task of creating this yearbook. Immediately we were faced with the questions: What is a yearbook? What is its purpose? To us, a yearbook should present an enduring reminder of the events- gay, sad, inspiring, and disappointing-of the past years, and also serve as the final voice of the Class of 1964. With this goal in mind, we commenced the production of this yearbook. Selected as the theme of the l964 Carthadian was The Shipf. Parallelisms are easily drawn between our education and the construction of a great vessel. Our formal learning started-as a boat's construction begins-with nothing but raw materials. It took the skilled hands of professionals to erect a basic foundation in the elementary education of us all. Similarly, skilled craftsmen work to construct the keel of a great ship. In high school our basic education is expanded, enlarged, polished, and carried on in greater depth. So, too, is a ship's foundation enlarged until the crude form begins to resemble a magnificent structure. As our education is completed and graduation marks our embarkment upon a new course, the final superstructure of the ship is finished, it is prepared for christening. Yet, as the completion of a ship is not an end, but only a small phase in the life of that ship, so, too, is our education not a goal in itself, but only a step towards that goal. And, as a ship is not declared seaworthy until itis first cruise, our education's value cannot be determined until we are tested-in the sea of life. Thus, with our ship as well constructed and prepared as possible, we are about to enter upon that sea, and may each of us be able to say, as the ship sails into port for the last time, Our ship has weathered every rack, The prize we sought is won. With this hope, we, the Graduating Class of Carthage Central School, present the 1964 C arthadian.
