Hi tory 1952 54 WEST CARTHAGE When we entered the hlgh school as Freshmen at West Carthage we expected to be graduated from that school as so many classes had been before us Centrallzatlon was a subject dlscussed but not reahzed and the school btuldlng was whole and undamaged We were tradltlonally 1n1t1ated by the upper classmen and began to parnclpate m the actxvxttes we found so new as well as the studles that were already a part of our program The boys took part 1n basketball and football the g1rls ln bowlmg cheerleadmg tntramurals band and chorus It was durlng our Sophomore year that two thlngs happened to change the course of our htgh school days The fxrst was the flre that destroyed the better part of the bullding used by the hlgher grades From Aprxl tmnl June classes were conducted 1n crowded and tmforgettable clrcumstances study halls 1n a gymnaslum w1th loose floor boards that threatened to trxp teachers and puptls ahke, b1ology classes on the stage behmd musty waterstamed curtaxns However school ZCIIVIIICS contmued and our class dtstmgulshed 1IS31f 1n athleucs mus1c and other fxelds The J V basketball team lost but one game durmg xts season and the glrls were acuve 1n bowllng chorus and band The second event that affected us was the dec1s1on made by the cmzens 1n our school distrlcts to centrallze the two schools Th1s resulted 1n many enurely new experlences durlng our .Tumor year 1952 54 CARTHAGE Our class began 1ts H1gh School years 1n September 1952 1n the Carthage Hxgh School bu1ld 1ng Our fxrst advlsor was Mlss Tupper Our flrst officers were Robert Allen Presldent Joanna Recor Vtce Presldent Mar1yln Beckman Secretary and Franc1s Natah Treasurer Our class partlctpated xn extra currlcular act1v1nes wlth IT1l1Ch CI1!hHS1aSm MHHY SIUdeF1IS w1th the 3dVlCB of Mlss MacM1ll1an entered thelr projects ln the annual New York Central Science Fa1r F1rst prtzes were recexved by many In both our Freshman and Sophomore years the chorus partlclpated ln the muslcal festlval 1n May at Potsdam The chorus also gave a Sprxng concert that was attended by the publlc Th1s brought to a close our years tn Carthage I-hgh, for the followmg year we became a part of the newly formed Carthage Central School dxstrlct 1954 56 CARTHAGE CENTRAL We began our Jtuuor year tn the new Central system. In order to raxse funds for our Semor year we sold candy at our home football and basketball games In February we held an mformal dance whlch was the most successful one of the year The ,Tumor Prom was named the Cotton Candy Festwal ' and was held on ,T une 24 1n the new West Carthage gymnaslum. Durxng our Junlor year we also recelved our class rlngs In the beg1nn1ng of our Semor year we elected offtcers and class advlsors Our Semor Ball the Ho11day Hop was held on December 28 At thxs dance we had a lung and queen wxth thelr court We agam sold candy athome basketball games to xncrease our class treasury On February ll the class went on 1ts Sen1orTr1p to Lake P1ac1d where many of the w1nter sports were enjoyed The Semor play The Flghtlng Llttles was so well recelved by the pubhc that ll was held a thlrd mme to accommodate those who were unable to attend the flrst presentatxon We are now lookmg forward to our Commencement BCIIVIIIBS xn June l g . l - ' 3 u u v - . . , . v n r o . . .
