V bpiyydji Lezzefspeezfeer The word renaissance', is a term derived from the French renaitre, meaning to be born againn. Within the pages of the yearbook of 1974, this Renaissance takes on an extended, contemporary connotation. The Renaissance of today is captured in the expressions of the Class of 1974 as the vitality and eager determination of an entire generation born to a new, modern age of enlightenment. One goal of this enlightened age is the fulfillment of the human mind: the full development of both mental and spiritual faculties in the individual. It is the goal, then, of this yearbook to illustrate this same development in the students of Carteret High. No longer sheltered by the confines of a close-knit peer group, the individual graduate is now free to incorporate his own new philosophies into the world around him. Through the emphasis of the unique world of new opportunity that faces the young it is hoped that their youthful qualities and hopes may not be abandoned at the threshold of maturity, but rather be brought to fruition with the passing years. It is in the preservation of the idealism and vigor of our youth that we, as a generation, may find the courage and fortitude to develop a new and better world of the future. 4 Julie Jacobs s i f wi 4 Y We learn to think differently every day of our lives. Whether we travel after graduation, enter a vocation, or expand our knowledge, we hope to awake one morning with a new depth and understanding unlike anyone else in the world. In essence, we will be re-born. Our sense of awareness will become extremely acute. And as the youth of America, it is our responsibility to bring about certain changes within our society. Then will the youth support their true ideas and goals - the goals of being a knowledgeable and interested generation. Graduation does not end the last chapter of our lives. New novels shall be written. We must allow our dreams to survive and make them a reality because we must shape our own futures and determine what is best for ourselves. We are our hope. Intelligent and mature individuals, we can break out of the mold, change from within, and use the change to our advantage. Before her untimely death on September 2, 1973, Mrs. Hila had served on the Carteret Board of Education for a total of thirteen years. In addition to this post, she served as Secretary of the Borough Planning Board, past President ofthe Carteret High School PTA, a member of various women's groups and an advisor to the St. Elias Catholic Youth Organization. Mrs. Hila held a particular interest for the youth of this and other communities, and succeeded in bridging the chasm of the generations with rare ease and genuineness. To all those who knew her, she emitted an aura of friendliness and eagerness to further any and all causes of particular value to her church and community. It is with a grateful remembrance and pride that we, the students of Carteret High School, pay tribute to a woman who embodied hopes and aspirations common to both the young and old of our community, a woman who possessed qualities of progressiveness and enlightenment to which we all strive. In remembrance of Mrs. Marion Kelbf The loss of Miss Marion R. Kelly on March 2, 1974 inflicted all at Carteret High with a deep sense of sorrow and emptiness. A dilligent worker as well as an understanding counselor, Miss Kelly was well known to be both an asset and ajoy to all those with whom she worked. During her thirty-two years at Carteret High, Miss Kelly rose from teacher to guidance counselor and then to Director of Guidance. There can be no doubt that the loss of Miss Kelly will leave its scar with her many close friends and associates at Carteret High. The 'absence of one so genuinely helpful and kind will never be totally forgotten. In life, in death, 0 Lord, abide with me! As seniors, we have reached the end of our high school days and await the experience of life outside the restriction of school and home. We feel the joy of the culmination of high H school and feel the sadness of ending friendships. il A 1' We remember the past four years . . . Ln Freshman year, 1970, marked our orientation into the hectic routine of high school ij life. We elected class officers: Janet Lynch, Presidentg Judy Thompson, Vice Presidentg C li I Kathie Giblin, Secretary and Bob Molarz, Treasurer. With our officers' leadership and the X ii U.. fn? assistance of our Advisors, Mrs. Rafft and Mr. Watkins, We recognized the need for money 2 X 'l and initiated our first activities: a dance entitled Aquarius, and a freshman cake sale. rib..-,X With the same offiers leading the way Sophomore year, the need for funds was ff again evident. We sold pens and cakes and held our official St, Patrick's Day Dance. it XI, With the close of Sophomore year came the transition from underclassmen to the gi!! X' X prestige-filled position of upperclassmen. R if ,ill Junior year offered many experiences as well as many changes. Mr. Cowan replaced Mr. Watkins as advisor, and we also had our first change of officers. Bob Molarz was now X .- X Nl, 1' President and Debbie Ward was made Treasurer. The late arrival of our Junior Rings and QW N A, V1 the excitement of the junior Prom brought the celebration of our being upperclassmen. Q, tl ji-1, Many students displayed their talents as Mr. Spaldo directed the Junior-Senior Play, l Bye-Bye Birdie? Others attacked the difficult college boards and enjoyed the new in , Distributive Education Program. Mark Russo, Presidentg Bud Burkhard, Vice President, Kathy X l ,iff Sabol, Secretary, Debbie Ward, Treasurer. Our advisor Mrs. Rafft was replaced by Mrs. , K' Tomaino. With the exception of the traditional senior trip to Washington D.Q., senior lf year ran smoothly and successfully. The Junior-Senior production of Wonderful Town was held in March, its success being followed by the senior candy sale, and our grand 3 E finale, the Senior Dinner Dance at the Shore Casino. 5 if The completion of our four years at Carteret High has left us a wealth of memories, ,, i-xxx i XX f 1 friendships and developed talents for our entrance into the world of tomorrow. As young . il adults it IS our responsibility as well as our privilege to shape that world through the ,X--J' V s f ' S- application of our developing, untapped potentials. William Shakespeare It is with the utmost regret that the students and faculty of Carteret High School surrender to retirement a most devoted and respected member, Miss Helen Wilson. Miss Wilson has served Carteret High first as a teacher of physical education and then as a guidance counselor. In addition to these duties, she has devoted free time to past Carteret High School plays and has coached the C.H.S. cheerleading squad. Altogether, Miss Wilson has devoted an astounding thirty-eight years toward the education of Carteret's youth. A graduate of Savage School of Physical Education Qnow a part of New York Universityj, Miss Wilson completed her post graduate work at Seton Hall University. Following retirement it is her plan to devote more time to personal interests too long neglected by the pressing duties of her former posts as teacher and counselor. Among these interests are the study of voice, art, the organ, gardening and Bible study. Miss Wilson, being a woman with great appreciation for people in general, has remarked that her most memorable and rewarding experience at has been her students, themselves. In remembering her students over the years, Miss Wilson happily described them as simply delightful . . .U Having been with C.H.S. for so many years, Miss Wilson has had a great opportunity for observing the many important changes in the structure of our youth. The youth of today, in her view, is opinionated but changeable, and is one of our most exciting future prospects. Many of her students will agree that it is Miss Wilson's fascination for the young that makes her one of the most receptive and enlightened members of Carteret High's faculty. There can be no doubt that Miss Wilson's departure from C.H.S. will be a loss not only to her students but also to all who worked with her in the past. A friend and instructor of so many years is not so easily given up to private life, It is the most sincere hope of the faculty and students of Carteret High that her future be filled with happiness and fulfillment, and that Miss Wilson holds the same warmth and appreciation for C.H.S. that it most certainly holds for her. We entered the football Wars minus 3 coaches, with deflated egos and with a one-platoon system of playing. Our real work began in june. Each player and coach knew that only hard work and dedication would make Carteret respected once again in Middlesex County. The first competitions of the year were successful. We began by winning our three scrimmages and our first three regular season games. Unfortunately, this was not the season- to finish unbeaten. Still, the Ramblers proved themselves a fine, strong, physical team and let each opponent know that Carteret was out to play. The sophomores and juniors tasted their first varsity victories. Hopefully, these first few victories will lead to many more. From 80 to 9,' tells the story of the dedication and affinity among the seniors. Our freshman football team started with 80 players. In our final senior game only 9 remained. We were not as successful as We had hoped, yet the 36 games and numerous practices contain memories which will always be ours. For these 9 seniors - Ed Bittner, Pat and Brian Crilley, Jerry Hughes, Stan Keleman, Bob Kulick, Bob Molarz, Nick Ziccardi and Al Zima - the work, the trouble, the friendship and the fun will always be remembered. To the coaches we owe special thanks for the past four years. Our debt to you is an intangible one. Your help, concern and dedication were most important to us. All we can offer in return is our respect and appreciation. Thank you to che coaches and best wishes to the 1974 Ramblers. Jerry Hughes Page 108 QB Hughes ignites Rambler attack. Not since the 1959-60 season has a Rambler team finished with a winning record. Included in its accomplishments was a second place finish in the Holiday Tournament. The highlight of the '474', season was a thrilling 68-66 victory over heavily favored Perth Amboy. This win represented Carteret's first victory over the Panthers in 14 years. Bob Molarz's last second shot provided the margin of victory. Carteret's success was truly a team effort. With five seniors and four juniors, Coach Kindzierski blended his winning formula. Offensively the Ramblers displayed a Well balanced attack While defensively they played a tough physical game. Led by seniors O,Connor, Sheridan, Stone, Molarz, and Dylag, Carteret defeated many of the top teams in the tough county conference. The Basketball fortunes of Carteret seem likely to continue. Along with the returning lettermen, Coach Kindzierski will be able to choose from a junior Varsity team that completed a 20-1 Season. The j.V. season included a Middlesex County Championship. The Carteret Frosh also completed a successful 13-3 season. Page 117 Managers: Bob, Steve, Tom, Alan Statisticians: Jeanette, Nadine, jean, Anne, Cheryl, Diane ,asv Pefurnzhg l?czwb!6r5.' Page 123 GIRLS' BASKETBALL The Carteret High School Athletic program took another step forward this year with che advent of a Varsity and Junior Varsity Girls' Basketball program. The Ramblerettes', competed in the Middlesex County Conference along with other area schools. Due to a lack of experience and other limitations, the Carteret entry was not expected to play exciting basketball. However, this was not to be. The Ramblerettes opened their season with a spectacular 36-35 overtime win over conference rival Cedar Ridge. This victory alerted Carteret foes not to take us lightly. Other victories followed at the expense ofJ.F.K., Perth Amboy, and South River. - The Ramblerettes were Ied by Co-captains Janice Selinsky and Darnell Carter. Much of the fire power came from underclassmen Jane Lawlor and Doreen Spoganetz. The Junior Varsity finished a fine campaign with eight wins and a single loss. Congratulations to the girls who played exciting basketball and brought recognition to Carteret High. Hopefully many lasting friendships were gained in this new venture. VARSITY - 3rd ROW: D.
