Yet we are obliged, in order to live at all, to make a cage of laws for ourselves and to stand on the perch. We are born as wasteful and unremorseful as tigers; we are obliged to be thrifty, or starve, or freeze. We are born to wander, and cursed to stay and dig. — William Bolitho — ai 24% + 5 SS eee - = Es ae ie ee ee ee Rabin§ To bear up under loss — to fight the bitter- ness of defeat and the weakness of grief — to be victor over anger — to smile when tears are close — to resist evil men and base instincts — to hate hate and love love — to go on when it would seem good to die — to seek ever after the glory and the dream — to look up with unquenchable faith in something ever more about to be — that is what any man can do, and so be great. — Zane Grey pir ht ne aD ae Te ME NE EOE Te ET ha SA SN eR BCAA A A RACES RAAB DR A ll itn ssf di tch mie a lla haf a 16 ABOVE: Stepping High. Mike’s skill in sports was displayed during his four years in football, three years in track, and two years in baseball. He was honored as “all zone’ in football and as Most Handsome. But let this not be a source for skeptical thoughts on spirit and enthusiasm. Oh no, the Carter Talons are certainly not least in those areas. Why, who could forget the times on the Drill Team bus when they sang chants and prayed for vic- tory? And what about the times when it rained and they stood in the mud simply for the hope of winning? Ah yes, and who could ever forget the time in Arlington when they were at the wrong end of the field and had to walk the entire length of the football field to get to the right side even though they were embarrassed by such an act? These are the Talons in all their craziness and individualism, their fun and memorable moments. There is yet to be a more enthu- siastic or more spirited group of girls than the Talons. Their active- ness and closeness as a group is definitely something to be proud of, and we should give these girls applause for their work through- out the years at CHS. Memories are built on fun and good times, and in the Talons, a good many they have tucked away! 127 ABOVE LEFT: Jill Morrison, Head Varsity Cheerleader. ABOVE RIGHT: Carol Porter. The staffers this year were faced with various problems such as lost film, not enough pictures, pictures that needed to be retaken, and last but not least, not knowing what to do. Under the leadership of Editor Mike Waugh and Sponsor Arthur Matchette these problems were soon solved and the 76-77 yearbook is the final result. GETTINGIT ALL TOGETHER This year’s EAGLE RECORD was led by an outstanding staff and sponsor. Renee Hamilton, editor, worked with much diligence and effort along with the ever-consistent sponsor, Mr. Seely. The combined talents of these two as well as the other staff members, helped make the EAGLE RECORD, pub- lished twice monthly, outstanding in its field. However, the EAGLE RECORD’s talents go beyond just printing papers. The yearly publication of the YUCCA YARNS enables stu- dents to express their artistic thoughts and emotions through prose and poetry. Mr. Seely and his group of enterprising journalists have brought many moments of laughter and news to the students at Carter, and their dedication deserves the praise of the student body. The committee’s main goal was to strive for a perfect union among the students at Carter. This was conceived by the work of the committee members them- selves. The members are James Bramlett, Spencer Davis, Caroline Flores, Ricky Kistler, Felicia Bell, Carmen Martinez, and Tony Martinez. LEADERS OF TOMORROW This year the Future Teachers of America began with many new and different activities. President Barbara Neace kept the organi- zation fluctuating and busy with various activities. Under the super- vision of sponsor Mrs. Joyce McCown, the members were taught responsibility and dedication to their club. Among the various activ- ities involved was the publication of THE CARTERITE, the student directory. This is perhaps the single most important feature and project of F.T.A. Throughout the years F.T.A. has built a lifetime of memories which reflect well upon the students and faculty of Carter as well as the members of the club itself. 145 THE SOUND OF THE TIMES PtP eee | an OPPOSITE TOP RIGHT: John Pawling checks out the sound system. These rebels clawed their way to Carter's kest district season in a decade, ending up with an identical record with Grapevine who rep- resented our Zone 3A-5 East in district playoff. That the Eagles were considerably smaller and less experienced than their scheduled opponents, the sports scribes once reasoned, should be their inescapa- ble doom. The 1976 season record dem- onstrates that so-called losers — a young team in a rebuilding year — can become winners with determination and hard work. And total team effort. And highflying spirit. If the local sports experts pronounce Carter’s 1977 prospects as ‘‘promising,”’ and they probably will, then you can be sure that the Eagles will deliver what oth- ers promise. ire, 1-265 TOP ROW — L to R: Coach Maclin, Bristol Dickey, Joe Dearing, David Bell, Ken Fennell, Kevin Salazar, Ken Kirkham, Roger Gifford, Jeff Dunn, Ray Bennett, Ricky Coats, Ricky McGuffin, Tom Scott, Jimmy Whipple, Sam Jordan, Mike Waugh, Chris Tay- lor, Mark Ayers, Coach Calder, Coach Kitchens. He con- tinued to praise with ‘Defensively, the team was exceptionally involved’’ and ‘‘The team as a whole played well.” The effort and experience of the JV should make an important contribution to the Varsity program. Some VARSITY HOPEFULS JV players eo seem certain to be excellent Varsity material that they should be named: Allen Husbenet, Robert Thompson, Billy Walters, Tommy Castellaw, Tim Spraggins, Lonnie Buggs, Paul Skinner, Robert Shaw, Johnny Cisneros, Larry Greenhaw and Eddie Mont- gomery. Many others with improvement should be quite competitive. TOP ROW — LtoR: Jay Long, Brian Ayers, Tim Spraggins, Larry Greenhaw, Tommy Castellaw, Larry Ritter. Coaches: Mike Leach and Gene Mahurin What can you say about a 1-7-1 season? A lot. And good too. Coach Mahurin feels, with just cause, that the defeats have been for the purpose of learning. For this experience the JV will be the smarter. This season has provided Coaches Leach and Mahurin the opportu- nity to become settled in their new function with Fresh- man football. It is not good that the team lost its spark plug and main drive, Freddie Edwards, in the second game with a dislocated elbow. It is good, however, that in the first place the Freshmen had such a great prospect for JV to lose. Carter will hear more, much more, of this Freshman. What you can say about the weather is that it was bad. Hot one week and cold the next. In addition to Freddy Edwards’ continuing in the Carter tradition of super quarterbacks, other prospective JV all-stars were William Bonner, Joe Murray, Richard Locke, Kevin Ash- ley, and Joe Espinoza. Obviously, Carter felt good about its Freshmen. 163 164 TOP LEFT: Terry sees two points. TOP RIGHT: Tommy says two hands are better than one. The opposition in the first half of district play was almost “‘blinded by the light’’ of Senior Terry White’s leadership especially and also that of Seniors Terry Wilson and Darrel Palmer: the Eagles ‘“closed the door’’ with 3-1. Point production and overall hustle of underclassmen were most credited to Freshman Freddie Edwards; Sophomore Earnest Jackson; Juniors Tracy Bullard, Doug Wilson, Tommy White. Elton says, ‘See me once and see the way | feel.’’ So we saw Coach Jess Hall once for his feeling: ‘‘It takes a lot of pride and self-dis- cipline for Seniors to be on a rebuilding team. Seniors did display these qualities in helping us remain united as a team.”’ Happily CHS will begin the 1977-78 season with five returning lettermen-starters. 169 B-TEAM BREAKS OPEN GOOD SEASON TOP LEFT: Coach Eddie Kitchens.
