FOOTBALL REVIEW Coach Hoyt Carrol in his second year as head football mentor coached one ofthe most inexperienced football teams in Carter High School history. The Green Hornets had only four experienced boys from last years team. But the future looks brighterfor the Hornets in the coming season with six- teen lettermen returning. The Green Hornets will have only one big spot to fill and that is at the right-halfback position which was filled by Captain Jackie Kirby. With so many in- experienced boys on the team how would any school record look? The Hornets failed to register a win in eleven games losing ten and tying one. But with sixteen lettermen return- ing from this year's team, football should have a bright fu- ture at Carter. Seniors lost by graduation are: Captain Jack Kirby, Owell McCarty, Bobby Rudder, Maynard Chesney, David Wy- rick, and Douglas Davenport. 82 AN Director-Mr. Archley Peggy Mays, Leah Maxwell, Susan Payne, Pat Dunlap, Marilyn Ford, Charlotte Beal, Patty McPerers. 83 -0' Betty Sue Kirby,Ne1deane Mays,Betty Jane Webster, Carolyn Troutt, Doris Ellison, Wanda Brown,Carze11 Thurman, Sandra Naill. 4 ,, 4 I3 84 v BASKETBALL REVIEW While the total number of wins forthe 1954-55 Basketball sea- son has not been the most impressive ever, to conclude that the year's activity has been insignificant is to discredit the consistently coordinate performances of Coach Hoyt Carroll's basketmen as well as Chesney, McCann, Mowery and others. The three seniors that graduate this June will long be remem- bered by students and followers as good basketball boys, boys you like to see play for the game they playg and boys with whom you like to associate. Capt. David Wyrick was admired by his team- mates and coach. He proved to be capable in all phases and turns of the game. Co-capt. Owell McCarty will be missed next year, and his position will have to be filled by a fighting, spirited bas- ketball man, measuring up to the abilities of him. Maynard Ches- ney, the most improved player at the end of the season, is known for his willingness to do his best. Lettermen returning'next year are: James McCann, Bill Wil- liams, Wayne Mowe ry, Burnett France, and Wayne Spencer. Coach Carroll says, All boys in Green and White uniforms played their positions with spirit and with desire to win at all times. The standing of the team up to the time the Dial is being printed is seven wins and fourteen losses. The B Team this year, coached by Senior, Jack Armstrong, has a record of three wins and five losses up to this time. It is giving promise of developing into a strong varsity team. 86 Owell McCarty Co-Captain, Forward Maynard Chesney Center . YR.
