R-2 High School Co-Editors Barbara Jarvis Keith Wagner friend What is a Tom Smith? He is a man who loves to laugh with others—the big guy who prowls the halls with the proverbial ear to-ear grin He is a friendly man with a reassuring face—a friend to all and a confidant to many. A man of deep thought and quick laughter, a Tom Smith loves life to its full extent, treasuring every moment A Tom Smith is a person with very broad shoulders on which everyone can cry. He'll listen patiently, dry your tears, and send you away with a smile. A Tom Smith is a Super Man. then? Not quite. His anger is famous, though shortlived. He can explode with a vengeance and soon be joking like a mischievous school boy. What is a Tom Smith? A Tom Smith is a super-nice man. And we. the HI LITES Staff, arc proud to dedicate this 1973-74 edition to him. with gratitude and admiration. a “An excellent plumber is infinitely more ad- mirable than an incompetent philosopher. The society which scorns excellence in plumbing because plumbing is a humble activity and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because it is an exalted activity will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy. Neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water.” CAREERS IN EDUCATION 6 m i n id fra ti on SCHOOL BOARD James Roark. President Luther Boyer Morris Campbell Toney Cates Jim Price Burnell Tucker Secretary Bill La vendar Treasurer Emil McDowell Keith Andrews Vickie Andrews Nancy Compton 8 Sandra Crowley Don Depriest Tears, smiles, and laughter combine to make a day in the life of a teacher in EHS frustrating, yet fascinating. To be a successful teacher, one must retain a sense of humor at all times. In the classroom, during noon hour, and while traversing the corridors, a teacher encounters obstacles that could hinder his usefulness as an educator. However, a smile or a joke at the right moment can turn a complicated situation into a pleasant, memorable moment for teachers and students alike. Teacher-Student Appreciation Day was an outstanding example of this precept. Mr. Carl Munsen poses in front of the teachers’ lounge, with an appropriate seasonal sign in the background. On the opposite page, four faculty members are pictured doing—well, maybe not doing what they do best—but they do make interesting shots! Mrs. Pridy is shown in action—counseling. Ms. Compton, who shared the privilege and hard work of spon- soring the Junior Class, along with Mrs. Theis, is busy supervising the concession stand. Oh. no! What’s the world coming to? Mrs. Wallace “sprouted” overnight in time to join the ghosts and ghouls on Halloween. Was it a hard day’s work? No. Mr. Ragsdale is merely resting between halves in the teacher-student basketball game. Jtt JJere! Education is an admirable thing. But nothing that is worth knowing Can be taught. -Oscar Wilde Each of us wants to be needed. Each of us wants to be remembered. Mrs. Harolcnc Pridy Mr Roger Pridy Di e CtaAS Of 74 . . . would like to thank Harolene and Roger Pridy for guiding and supporting us throughout four years of high school. Bobby Brooks illustrated this point for the B team, as he utilized his height to rebound and score for the Redbirds. Another interesting statement concerning basketball which definitely applies to the Redbirds’ team is. “The man with pull is ahead at the start; the man with push, at the finish. That is true about our team, as the members pushed and pulled through every game. For the team as a whole, it was a time of improving and perfecting athletic skills. 46 Jackie Coon. Together they vocally supported the EHS basket- ball boys. Not only were they great during the games, cheering, but the girls provided half-time entertainment with pom-pom routines. With the aid of their diligent sponsors. Mr. Smith and Mrs. Pridy, the council members worked relentlessly to promote better understanding between the ad- ministration and the student body. They also strived to make EHS a more interesting, student- oriented school. In order to improve the standing of EHS’s Beta Club, she looked through the National Beta Handbook, and devised the new plan that was put into operation early in the year. To qualify for the annual trip to the St. Louis convention. Beta members earned stars to show their participation in fund raising and service projects. Although Beta Club isn’t strictly a service organization, it tries to stay within these boundaries. A major annual undertaking of the club is the designing and decorating of Homecoming. The many hours spent preparing for this activity are worthwhile upon seeing the crowd waiting breathlessly to see who will become the reigning queen for the year. At this time all the girls get together, young and old. and have a ball. This is Ladies’ Night and the ladies enjoy it to the fullest. However, dinners and jokes are not all FHA has to offer. It sponsors many worthwhile projects, such as collecting for UNICEF and Cerebral Palsy. This year the FHA’ers learned the truth of the statement. “When a housewife has nothing to do. she still has something to do.” re cientidti The officers of the Science Club worked together to coordinate the activities throughout the year STANDING, left to right, are Randall Combs. Barbara and Keith quickly came to realize the meaning of pressure, leadership, and organization. The office of the OZARK ECHO was the scene of purposeful ac- tivity throughout the school year. Producing a monthly paper takes planning, skill, and generous doses of hard work. The staff soon realized that the sponsor. Mrs. Harolene Pridy, ex- pected a high-perfor- mance job from each and every member. Under her supervision, the “dir- ty dozen quickly grew into a productive unit. During the year, however, the paper staff was plagued with problems. Lack of an ap- propriate working area, outside factors, and even Nature herself, by providing a snowstorm, whittled away at the paper, but in vain. The staff learned an impor- tant principle of jour- nalism—deadlines must be met. And meet them they did. '3f WeCoM Jl Ait We RememLr reeze Drop one piece of paper per person between each class, every day of the school year, and a large amount of waste paper will accumulate. In fact, that is 1.760 pieces of paper every day! That is only one of the reasons we appreciate Mr. Bill Freeze, who keeps our school looking neat and clean, both in the halls and in the classrooms. Working from morning until late after school, he cleans floors and tends the janitorial aspects of EHS Bill is a friend to both students and teachers, and is always there when needed. He is often the force behind the scenes which makes for the successful com- pletion of an activity, whether it be locking up after a ballgame. or unlocking so students may work on pro- jects such as Homecoming decorations. Freeze is living proof of the statement. “Behind every great man there is a great woman.” She has worked along side her husband as tirelessly and unceasingly as he. to help make EHS pleasant and comfortable. Mr. Freeze, known as “Bill” to everyone at EHS. has served here as janitor for 15 years. This year is Bill’s last at EHS. and we would like to say. “Thank you—you’ve done a terrific job!” Mr. Freeze well deserves the enjoy- ment of his retirement days. The yearbook staff must learn in a few months how to create a yearbook that will be remembered in the years to come.
