Annual Staff Members: Hi-Lites IT IS WITH A DEEP SENSE OF PRIDE THAT WE AS THE HI-LITES STAFF PRESENT OUR 71 EDITION YEARBOOK. AS YOU TURN THE PAGES OF THIS BOOK, WE HOPE THAT IT WILL ALWAYS REMIND YOU OF HAPPY DAYS, SUCCESS, AND ACHIEVEMENT. WE ARE GRATEFUL TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE WORKED WITH US IN ORDER THAT WE COULD PRESENT VIVID MEMORIES FOR YOU TO REMEMBER AND CHERISH. WE WOULD ESPECIALLY LIKE TO THANK THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE: MR. EDWIN WALLACE, ADVISOR MR. AND MRS. JOHN LAROSE, PHOTOGRAPHY WALSWORTH YEARBOOK COMPANY, PUBLISHER Left to Right: JANICE KELLEY, ARLETTA LAXTON, JACKIE CROWLEY, EVA WALKER, JUDY JOPLIN, LINDA CARTER, WILMA ELLINGTON, JANET ROARK, PAT POWELL BROWN, SUE LEACH (NOT PRESENT) L=? ■ % i w ' V EDITOR: WANDA HUDDLESTON CO-EDITOR LOIS TIPTON K Hi-Lit es Staff Honors Mrs. Roam Dedication Definitions of teachers are plentiful, but one seems particularly to describe the person to whom this annual is dedicated — Mrs. Margaret Roam. A teacher is an aggregate — She is Dignity with chalk dust in her hair, Cheer with a throbbing headache, Congeniality with a pop-test up her sleeve, Poise with a thumbtack in her chair, a Saint crucified daily by forked tongues, and Serenity buried in test papers.” Mrs. Roam has been involved in education for 32 years, all of which have been in Carter County. She consoles, cheers, and chastises her students to fit the occasion. Co- operating with faculty and administration on curricular and extra-curricular events is one for her salient characteristics. For the first time in 15 years, Mrs. Roam is no longer on the high school faculty. She is now teaching 5th grade. This assignment, although different, is not new, for she has taught 17 years in the elementary grades. Community and church organizations consume part of her time and energy, as does her weekly bowling league. We, the Hi-Lites Staff, are proud to recognize Mrs. Margaret Roam for all her numerous contributions. Superintendent L. W. Kingen The students of the East Carter County R-2 High School would like to thank these men for making our school a better place for the students of 1971 and future generations to come. 5 THANK YOU. We are lucky to have, as our Administrative Assistant, Mr. Or- ville Rayburn. Mr. Rayburn, who came to us two years ago from the St. Louis Schools, is in charge of curriculum for Ellsinore High School and is also Federal Programs Coor- dinator for the R-2 District. Shown with Mr. Rayburn is his wife, Ethel, an aide in our school. In addition to other numerous responsibilities, Mrs. Rayburn is the gentle, patient lady who administers first aid to injured and sick students. Mrs. Rayburn's motherly assurances have helped to calm many an upset child this year. As Director of Curriculum, Mr. Rayburn supervises the courses we high school students take in pursu- ing our careers. As Federal Pro- grams Coordinator, Mr. Rayburn sifts through mountains of paper work and red tape each year in attempts to bring us more federal assistance for our school district. Mr. Rayburn's efforts have been largely responsible for bringing us several very beneficial pro- grams which we would not have had otherwise. A man of his capabilities is hard to find. Mr. and Mrs. Rayburn and their children live on a farm near Ellsi- nore. In addition to their many re- sponsibilities, they find time to ac- tively work their farm. Mr. Rayburn is also an ordained minister. The yearbook staff admires their initiative, friendliness, helpfulness, and talents. Snider Mr. Kelley Mr. Leach Mr. Ballard E WISH TO THANK THE ADVER- TISERS OF OUR ANNUAL We wish to express our very sincere appreciation to those people and firms who have purchased advertising and given donations for the 1971 Hi- Lites. Each year it becomes more expensive to produce a book such as this. As our school grows, as a necessity, so must our book grow. This takes money. This year, especially, our school's financial situation is critical. The defeat of the income tax revision last spring was a serious blow to our school. Opposition to school taxes has mounted considerably in recent years. Our financial situation is now such that school projects like yearbooks, news- papers, etc., which do not pay their ways, are in danger because the school is unable to finance these projects anymore. For these reasons we are especially appreciative of the people who have supported our book this year. To each and everyone of you, a sincere thanks. We, on the staff, appreciate what you have done. We want to ask all the citizens of our district to please review these ads carefully and patronize these people who have given generously so that projects such as this will not have to be discontinued for lack of money. After all, the real purpose of advertising is to increase sales. However, we feel that the people who advertise in our book do so not out of expectations of higher profits or larger sales, but because they are truly interested in schools and young people and are eager to help us. People from as far away as Poplar Bluff, Doniphan, Piedmont, Van Buren, Williamsville, and Fre- mont contributed generously (more generously this year than ever before) to our book. We think it is time that our people contributed generously to the support of these advertisers. Ellsinore students, you should also review or read these ads carefully and see for yourself who is truly interested in your school. If we had no advertising, this book would have cost you over $9. Please make it a point to express your appreciation to these advertisers in the near future. We think we have produced a good book this year. Had it not been for the generosity of our advertisers, it would not have been possible. 86 The Hi-Lites Staff of 1971 WELLS FIREPLACE WOOD WELLS DISCOUNT SHOES Commercial Hickory - Kindling Wood 703 Simmons St. - Kirkwood, Mo.
