5S£225 Hi-Lit es WE, AS THE HI-LITES STAFF OF 1970, ARE PROUD TO PRESENT OUR YEARBOOK OF '70. WE HOPE THAT THIS BOOK WILL BRING AS MANY- PLEASANT MEMORIES TO YOUR MIND AS IT DOES TO THE PEOPLE ON THE STAFF, WE WANT VERY MUCH TO THANK THE PEOPLE WHO MADE IT POSSIBLF FOR US TO HAVE OUR BOOK THIS YEAR. ESPECIALLY TO: EDWIN WALLACE, SPONSOR LA ROSE STUDIO, PHOTOGRAPHERS WALSWORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY, PUBLISHER Annual Staff Members CO-EDITORS KATHY CARNAHAN LINDA ASHER JANICE EUDALEY MARY ANN LASSITER SHARON WHALEN EVELYN WILDER LINDA CARTER WANDA HUDDLESTON SHIRLEY MICHAEL ARLETTA LAXTON JUDY JOPLIN JUDY JOHNSON LOIS TIPTON CHRIS GUERRERO SHIRLEY RUSSELL BARBARA WHITE PATTY CATES JANICE KELLY SUE LEACH JANET ROARK EDDIE RUSSELL SUE KEARBEY BILLIE SILMAN Presenting 1970 Hi-Lites Dedication The Hi-Lites Staff of Ellsimore High School wishes to pay special recognition to a man deeply admired by all students of this school, faculty members, and community. With his natural manner and undying love for the student body at Ellsinore, he has won respect and admiration of all. Mr. Melvin Dale Privett was born May 4, 1933, in Ellsinore, Missouri. During his youth, he attended Ellsinore for six years, and two years in Mexico. He attended high school at Ellsinore, graduating in 1951. From November, 1952 to November, 1965, Mr. Privett served in the United States Air Force. He furthered his education while attending Harris Teachers College one year and the remainder at Southwest Missouri State, where he received his B.S.E. Social Studies was his major and English was his minor. Mr. Privett was Principal for a total of eight years, three years at Silox and five years at Ellsinore High School. Although he continued to teach, he also furthered his education study- ing at Southeast Missouri State, University of Missouri at Columbia, Mis- souri, and Southern Illinois University. It is not surprising that Mr. Privett, with his strong determination and ambition, would not want to expand his knowledge and use his many talents. At Three Rivers Junior College, Poplar Bluff, Missouri, he is now the Di- rector of Financial Aids. He is willing to help any of those who desire help or any cause which seems vital. Even though he works in another area, he still resides in Ellsinore, with his friends and former students. Ellsinore High School would like to express their sincere thanks for Mr. Privett's help in all the years he served as Principal. fy-: sv- s 4 Our Superintendent L. W. Our education is their primary concern. We appreciate their interest and enthusiasm in the affairs of our school. Thank you for the educational opportunities you have given, and will continue to give to the students of East Carter County R-2. Jr. High Principal Mr. George Copeland Mr. Copeland has been in the R-2 Car- ter County school system for 11 years. He has devoted the last 24 years to teaching and making responsible citizens out of freckle-faced kids. We find it hard to ex- press our true feelings in telling him how much we appreciate all of the wonderful things he has done for G.J.H. Many of the Ellsinore students have had him in junior high and remember the fair attitude he had with all the kids. It would take the entire book to ex- press our appreciation, but we on the an- nual staff would like to speak for the whole school in saying Thank You. 6 Jr. High Secretary Mrs. Pearly Abbott Mrs. Abbott has been in the school system at G.J.H. for 4 years. She has been a responsible secretary and also a friend to every kid in school. She is al- ways ready and willing to help in school activities of any projects that G.J.H. might undertake. We are proud to have such a wonderful person as Mrs. Abbott with us. We all hope she will be with us for many years to come. ELEMENTARY R. Borges N. Bounds D. Bowman M. Boyer M. Byuner T. Carter T. The Ellsinore National Beta Club attended the National Beta Convention on January 16th and 17th, 1970. They stayed at the Sheraton-Jefferson Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri. Everyone said that it was a very enjoyable convention. 82 Beta Club Officers Left to right: Glenda Fraze, Secretary; Sherman Sisco, President; Mrs. Roam, Sponsor; Mel Pri- vett, Vice-President; Lois Tipton, Reporter. The Ellsinore Beta Club is on its way to the Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis to watch a baseball game with the famous Cardinals. The Beta Club has also been invited to go to the Arkansas State Uni- versity in Jonesboro. The Future Homemakers of America is the national organization of pupils studying homemaking in junior and senior high schools of the United States and territories. As an integral part of the program of home economics in the schools of America it offers oppor- tunity for the further development of pupil initiative in planning and carrying out activities related to homemaking. The future Homemakers of America brings together state groups interested in and working toward better home and family living, provides opportunities to share in solving problems important to home life, and sponsors group projects, local, state and national in scope; it increases opportunities for the development of leadership and intelligent participation so much needed in a democratic society. Future Homemakers of America is an incorporated, non-profit youth organization. It came into being through the cooperative efforts of youth enrolled in homemaking in second- ary schools in building a national organization of their own in which they may develop social qualities and promote better home life for themselves and their families. The Ellsinore FHA Chapter has done many things this year. At Christmas time we had an FHA work shop. All the members of the Ellsinore Chapter brought toys from home for needy children in the vicinity. On January 23, 1969, we had our annual FHA Mother Daughter Banquet. It was enjoyed by all. The motto of Future Homemakers of America expresses the purpose of the organiza- tion: Learning to live better today in order that our lives and those of our families may be better tomorrow. 8« Just Try And Move Me!!! Elementary teachers are the ones who taught us the three R's—reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic—and thanks to their patience, they have made our high school years a little easier. Primary teachers so graciously cope with the misfortunes children have when they start to school. Untied shoes, tears for mother, and various other incidents occur daily. Teachers of intermediate grades have the task of teaching more advanced knowledge to students and contending with problems of dis- cipline, instruction, etc. Junior High teachers contend with prob- lems of studying—or not studying—and do their best to make students see how impor- tant an education is to them. Elementary teachers so patiently strive for the betterment of community and individ- ual life. They try to teach children what is right or wrong and to rely upon themselves. They teach manners, respect for their elders, and other things that are so important to students when they become older. Elementary teachers always unselfishly give of themselves for their students. Their dedication and generosity is overwhelming. Students never stop to realize that without our elementary teachers, we would be un- able to continue our education through high school and college. Elementary teachers are the first great link in the chain of our education. Even though their discipline seemed so harsh, it helped guide us through some bad times. We will long respect and remember the faithfulness and contributions of our elemen- tary teachers. Thank you, each and every one of you, who has done so much for every person who was ever an elementary student.
