In Memoriam The Hi-Lites Staff of Ellsinore High School wishes to pay special tribute to a man we all admired, a man who greatly benefited our school and community, and our nation as well, Mr. Albert Sidney Johnson Carnahan was born January 9, 1897, in Ellsinore Missouri. During his youth, he attended Crommertown Rural School and Ellsinore when only two years of high school were offered. Around the year 1915. he began teaching at Crommertown. He taught school at Ellsinore for a year or two prior to 1938 when he came to Ellsinore as Superintend- ent- and: teacher. Although he continued teaching, he also furthered his education, receiving a Bachelor of Science degrbe in Education from Southeast Missouri State College, and a Masters degree in Education from the University of Missouri. In 1944,'he was elected to Congress as Representative of the Bth.Congressional District of Missouri, an office he ably served fourteen years. In 1961, the late President John F. Kennedy appointed Congressman Carnahan as ambassador to Sierre Leone. This country is located on the west'coast of Africa. Mr. Carnahan held this office for two and one half years. He was accorppaniec! by his wife, the former Miss Mary Kathel Schupp. They returned to retire and live in the home that they had built near Ellsinore. Even after retirement, the Ambassador was active on the Ellsinore School Board. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the Three Rivers Junior Col- lege when it was formed in 1966, and held that position until his death. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Ellsinore. Each year Ambassador and Mrs. Carnahan offer a scholarship to Three Rivers Junior College, to be awarded to a graduating senior who has been chosen by the faculty as deserving. Mr. Carnahan was described as being a man who was quiet, congenial, loyal, determined, and willing to help those he considered worthy or any cause which seemed vital: he had a great ability to adjust to any circumstance and to make the best of it. Although he has left us to enter a better world beyond, be will be remembered by people not only in Carter County, but all over the world.
