HI-LITES IT IS WITH A DEEP SENSE OF PRIDE THAT WE AS THE HI-LITES STAFF PRESENT OUR 69 EDITION YEARBOOK. AS YOU TURN THE PAGES OF THIS BOOK, WE HOPE THAT IT WILL ALWAYS REMIND YOU OF HAPPY DAYS, SUCCESS, AND ACHIEVEMENT. WE ARE GRATEFUL TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE WORKED WITH US IN ORDER THAT WE COULD PRESENT VIVID MEMORIES FOR YOU TO REMEM- BER AND CHERISH. WE WOULD ESPECIALLY LIKE TO THANK THE FOL- LOWING PEOPLE: MR. During his youth, he attended Crommertown Rural School and Ellsinore when only two years of high school were offered. Around the year 1915. he began teaching at Crommertown. He taught school at Ellsinore for a year or two prior to 1938 when he came to Ellsinore as Superintend- ent- and: teacher. Although he continued teaching, he also furthered his education, receiving a Bachelor of Science degrbe in Education from Southeast Missouri State College, and a Masters degree in Education from the University of Missouri. In 1944,'he was elected to Congress as Representative of the Bth.Congressional District of Missouri, an office he ably served fourteen years. In 1961, the late President John F. Kennedy appointed Congressman Carnahan as ambassador to Sierre Leone. This country is located on the west'coast of Africa. Mr. Carnahan held this office for two and one half years. He was accorppaniec! by his wife, the former Miss Mary Kathel Schupp. They returned to retire and live in the home that they had built near Ellsinore. Even after retirement, the Ambassador was active on the Ellsinore School Board. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the Three Rivers Junior Col- lege when it was formed in 1966, and held that position until his death. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Ellsinore. Each year Ambassador and Mrs. Carnahan offer a scholarship to Three Rivers Junior College, to be awarded to a graduating senior who has been chosen by the faculty as deserving. Mr. Carnahan was described as being a man who was quiet, congenial, loyal, determined, and willing to help those he considered worthy or any cause which seemed vital: he had a great ability to adjust to any circumstance and to make the best of it. Although he has left us to enter a better world beyond, be will be remembered by people not only in Carter County, but all over the world. Albert Sidney Johnson Carnahan Superintendent L. W. Truth- fully, though, this fine man is thinking about all the responsibilities placed on his shoulders as Elementary Principal and teacher. MR. GEORGE COPELAND E.H.S. Mr. M. D. E. class teacher, then turn your head. Our old ex- cuses for not dressing out just didn't work this year. Because of Mr. Tom Smith, the students in the Senior Class of '69 have suf- fered from over exertion! If you ever happen to hear a Sen- ior talking above your head, don't blame us; it's Mr. Holland's fault! He has been our English teacher for six years. When we came to high school, we weren't sure if he was following us or if we were following him! That's all right though, because once you make friends with some- one, it's good to be together. We thank Mr. Holland for tak- ing an interest in our lives and also for helping us have a lot of fun while we were learning. Those of us who have trou- ble understanding the technical facts about science, algebra, chemistry and biology, have of- ten wondered how Mr. Collins can possibly remember so much about all those subjects. Is he a Business Education and History teacher; a year- book advisor; a mayor; or a part time garbage collector? Those of you who know him, would never believe that 10% of his spare time is taken up by all of these jobs and the other 90 is spent re- laxing! 8 The latest addition to the Sen- ior High faculty is Miss Sandra Fer- rell. Because she is so young looking, it is often hard to recognize her as a teacher.' She has added new ideas in the Homemaking Department which in the future will make better homes for the departing Senior girls and whomever they may choose. While adding to the good looks of our class- rooms, Mrs. Wallace helps us keep Edwin in line and tries her best to pass on her secretar- ial and bookkeeping talents. The future businessmen in the class of '69 will appreciate any goodlooking OR qualified secretaries that have taken classes under her. Mr. Pridy is no scrawny runt. He weighs over one-hundred and fifty lbs. and towers above the ground more than five-foot four inches. This man has to look down upon most average height stu- dents but if you .treat him re- spectfully, he will look up to you. This is our Granny! Now don't get the idea that she's old and slow. Granny is just a nick-name that we Seniors pick up from her granddaughter. She IS over 35 though. She's our ol' Rough and Ready! Seriously though, Mrs. Roam is READY to laugh and joke with us more of- ten than she is ROUGH! Mrs. Pridy is the Counselor in our school system. If there were only some way that she could make us believe how smart we are, instead of proving how little we really know. It's best to know the truth though, and we all can use her help in deciding on our vocation. But Stanley ITm not hungry June 1, 1979 Dear Diary, Today I was visited by an old friend of mine, Linda McCarter. She said that Ralph and she go fishing a lot now days. She is still waiting for him to save up enough money for them to get married on. She told me that she attended the tenth anniversary of the Senior Class of 1969 last night. While she was there, she saw and heard all of this: Bruce Asher is still single and playing the field. Sandra Bishop is working in the T.V. world now, she is the voice of the Road Runner. Linda said she saw Glen Boyer who is an orange peeler and Winston Boyer who, they say, is trying to hold down a job by sitting on IT. ? ? ? The anniversary party was honored by the presence of the first woman Presi- dent, Miss Diana Bradshaw. I wras very surprised to learn that Jerry Brown was a leader of a motorcycle gang and that Joe Brown was leading riots in Chicago. Denise Brock has made it to the moon, she loves it there and has a great time playing with the little green men. Kenny Caldwell has his own brewery now and it is legal too. Mack Campbell is a well known evangelist, traveling the world over. Mary Canady is married, but Linda didn't know who to. Clyta Carnahan is 27 years old and she still looks darling. She looked so cute as she chaperoned Diana and Donnie. Mary Lynn Collins really surprised me, she is the secretary and wife of a world famous D.J. Linda said that Tim Cook told her that he had just joined the Association of Al- coholics Anonymous. Larry Crowley is the number one playboy in the city of St. Louis. Danny Emery is sitting back and taking it easy now that he is a millionaire. Ricky Eudaley, poor guy, he is still trying to pass English III. Mike Evans has a wrecking service now. He said the reason he went into this field was his ole Ford. Violet Fann is still living at home and milking the cow. She told me the other day that she is waiting for her Prince Charming. Beulah Ferren is living off the government by drawing Old Age Pension. I don't know how some people do it. Richard Fraze is the science teacher at Ellsinore High School now. Agnes Gargac used to be an airline stewardess and now she owns her own airlines. Robert Garrett is a college professor at Ellsinore University. Linda Green is the manager, also a member of a private Lonely Hearts Club. Ru- mor is that she is the only member. Dyana Greer always did like big strong men but I never dreamed that she would ever marry Superman. Grace Guerrero is the first psychedelic dancer in outer space. She really turned on at the party. Don Hall is teaching English now that Mr. Holland has flipped his wig. Bless his soul. CONTINUED June i, 1979 Reed Hutchison, mind you, drinks all of Mr, Caldwell's profits up. Nancy Johnson is married and teaches judo in her spare time. Sue Kindrick is Dean of Ellsinore University. Sherry Leach couldn't make it to the party because she is peeking out between the bars since they made boy chasing illegal. Vernon Ledbetter flew in from Las Vegas where he is living and driving the Roy Rogers Show Horse Wagon. He says that he spends all his vacations on the moon. Ha! Connie Michael has just been chosen Model of the Year over Twiggy. Twiggy will serve as her stand in. Lonnie Michael is an assistant to Don Hall, who is the English teacher. I am a- fraid that the same thing will happen to him that happened to Mr. Holland. Steve Monore has finally made it to the top of his step ladder. His chosen profes- sion was always to be a Meter Maid. Delbert Moss is now a basketball player on the team of the All-American Red- heads. Sue McDowell is still going to college. She is majoring in being a go-go dancer. Don Norris was the Cover Boy for McCall's magazine last month. I'm going to have to start taking that magazine. Vondus Phillips was arrested for whistling at Lady Godiva last week. Lola Richmond is a world known artist of the 1900's. Her favorite subject is Ricky Eudaley. David Sanders wasn't at the celebration because he was in the hospital. It seems that his racing car jumped a 100 foot cliff. He only received a broken leg. John Sheperd's work consists of posing for BEFORE and AFTER pictures for Slim Muscles Company. Robert Smith is still hanging around Ellsinore, doing the same old usual things. Debbie Stephens is a Bivouac Baby now. I still can't believe it. Stanley Turner is a millionaire. He hit the jack-pot on his vacation in Las Vegas. Roger Wells is in debt. All of his money goes in on that old Ford. Carol Wilhite brought a head of an elephant to the party. She shot it while on a safari in Africa. It seems that I missed quite a lot by not going to the anniversary party. I sure would have liked to see my old classmates again. But the day was not a complete loss for me. Jim and I celebrated our twins' birthday by taking them to the zoo. Goodnight, Diary! 41 Love, Yvonne Boyer Collins F.H.A. Mother-Daughter Banquet 1968-69 LJLA. Williford 86 Mrs. Ova Johnson The yearbook staff of Ells inore High School wants to pay special tribute to a person who, by her dedication and warm, generous personality, has influenced the lives of countless numbers of young peo- ple in our community. Mrs. Ova Johnson has been a member of this community for many years. She has served the youth of the Carter County R-2 School District unselfishly as a teacher. Under her guidance, many of our young la- dies learned each year the skills and re- sponsibilities needed to become a capable homemaker. Each year her students took their share of honors at the contests held for home- making students. Each year Mrs. Johnson gave generously of her spare time for us. She spon- sored classes, helped with the plays and banquets, gave advice and sympathy, and mended torn clothing for students and teachers alike. She was always willing to help us with our problems. She set high standards for us and was firm in demanding our best. Year after year she sent us into the world better prepared to meet the challenge facing all graduating seniors. Her list of achievments is long indeed. She has retired and is now resting after a job well done. Her career as a teacher is finished, but her accomplishments will never completely fade away. Her service to the students of this school is appreciated very much. The students of Ellsinore High School remember her most by her friendliness and her love to tell jokes. We thank you, Mrs. Ova , for devoting your life to us. 87 Valley Plaza Shopping Center Poplar Bluff, Missouri Largest Shopping Center In Southeast Missouri Plenty of Free Parking SCOTT’S CAFE SWANK’S SERVICE Highway 67 South in Poplar Bluff AAA 24 Hour WRBCK.INC 1C Phone: SU 53015 or SU 55222 STUCKER and GROVES IGA FOOD LINER 220 East Pine Poplar Bluff, Mo.
