It is with great pride that we, the 1968 Hi-Lites Staff, dedicate this book to the United States Service- men who have fought and are now fighting— FOR THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM. For if a man is not ready or able to fight for his existence, righteous Providence has already decreed his doom. The world is not intended for cowardly nations If we could ask one thing of you Our sole request would be Do all within your power To keep our country strong and free.

the world who give their energy, ambition, and even the privileges of the free, and that the oppressed in o do in America. The Annual Staff of E H.S;'expresses our appreciation to the men and women around ’ n their lives that we might enjoy other countries might live as we We believe it is up to everyone to fight, to speak out, and to assert themselves for the cause of freedom which we hold so dear. -.If we don11 the smell of free air could be- come dark and damp as in a prison cell. We wdri't be able to look at ourselves in a mirror, much less look at our future sons, and daughters, because we will know we have failed our God, our country, and our future generations. W Because wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to epnstruct that defense. Each generation has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty. The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service are found around the globe. Their efforts have not been forgotten. k We are proud of our men who hold their heads high and stand tally not in protest, but in loyalty and devotion to their .country. We salute you that in thexpast fought for the preservation of freedoms that we now enjoy, and you presently engaged in preserving these freedoms for our future generations. I y I UK You were at Concord’s bridge. Your footprints marked the snow at Valley Forge. You stood with Washington on the sun-drenched heights of Yprktown. You pulled the trig- ger at New Orleans. You saw both sides of the war between the states. The hill at San Juan felt the fury of your charge. The Phillipines echoed to your shout. The dark forest of the Argonne blazed under your barrage. Chateau Thierry crumbled to your cannonade. You raised our banner on Okinawa. You scrambled over Normandy's beaches. Across the 38th parallel you made your stand. Now5 you take your rightful place proudly and loyally in Viet Nam, and your efforts will not be in vain. We understand and support your cause. You have cradled a crying child and have seen the terror leave her eyes. You have brought a more abundant, fuller, and finer life to us. Whenever a child cries or a woman weeps in time of disaster, you have been there, and we thank you. We would not change places with any other people or any other generation. You have made us proud of America and its ideals. We deplore those who lift thfeir voices in protest and demonstration, not because it is not their right to disagree, but because they are using the freedoms you gave to them to create dissention. We believe firmly iii the infinite potential in people--any peo- ple, all people. But their improvement must come always from within themselves. In our own country it is our hope that the Klansmen, the Negroes, the Hebrews, and the Catholics will sit down together in the common purpose of goodwill and dedication; it is our dream that all nations will soon be able to resolve their differences and can truly live in peace. Until then, we must ask you to continue the struggle against tyranny, to protect the oppressed everywhere, and to ignore the taunts and jeers of those who would make us weak and helpless. We promise to do our part to help you.
