Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1981 volume:

The following pages are a record of the first year in the new Carter County High School. In 1978 a bond issue passed allowing 1.3 million dollars to he spent for a new school. In 1979 construction began. Within two years the school was almost finished. A few ceiling tiles were missing and boxes cluttered the halls, but we moved in and started the 1980-81 school year. For the first time ever Carter County was able to offer its young people shop and home economics. The band room is large enough for the entire band. The instruments have a good storage place. And the Music Mothers presented the music The big new gym made it possible for more fans or me bulldogs to watch the games. And the multi-purpose room has been used for many community events as well as the hot lunch program. The achievements of Carter County High School students were great, but the support received from our county people is greater. We students are very grateful for this new school. Thank you, people of Carter County, for allowing us to have the many opportunities that these facilities provide. The students of CCHS I I 2 3 Mr. Tuggle, or T as he is called by us students, has been law and order at . .H.S. for eight years. His is the familiar figure with a coffee cup in one hand and a yardstick in the other. It is Mr. Tuggle who is at the school when a bus leaves at five o'clock in the morning, and who is still there when the Carterettes finish cleaning up late at night. T is the person to see if anything needs to be done. He has built numerous shelves, organized many activities, and taken students home when they missed the bus. However, if tardiness is a habit, Mr. Tuggle is the person to avoid. Mr. T. has seen the class of '81 through quite a lot. And we do 4 appreciate it. Throughout our four years of high school there has always been a helping and loving hand to assist us. When we were in doubt of our abilities or just didn't know which way to go, Mrs. Love was always there. She managed to get us back on the rrack and going forward again. This is why the graduating class of 1981 would like to show its appreciation to this wonderful and irreplacable lady. Thank you, Mrs. Love, for showing us the light at the end of the tunnel.. I had heard rumors that oil and uranium strikes had caused the town to grow the last ten years, but I didn't realize the extent of such development. I made my final approach and landed. As I stepped off the plane I was met by attendants in coveralls labeled PU-Chang Ihterprizes. I never expected Leo Farnsworth and Carl Knapp to expand to the airlines industries. As I entered the terminal, Leo met me at the door. He heard from the control tower that my plane was landing. We went to the cafe where we were greeted by Mikel (Sarah Tucker) Higgins, and she served us fresh as homemade coffee. I asked her how she was and she replied, I'm fine, Justin is still single. She informed me that Justin was the head researcher of a galaxy probe for NASA. While we were visiting I happened to glance up at a T.V. To my amazement Letoy Farnsworth was making her debut at the Metropolitan Opera. I know her voice was high, but I never realized how high until my coffee cup shattered. Leo had a carburetor to adjust so we parted. I went over to the car rental and as I examined the cars I noticed all the grills were missing, and the front right fender was smashed. I knew right away that Shay Beyer was in the car rental business. I went to the desk to inquire about an economy car only to find that the smallest engine they had was a 327 with dtiel carburetors. „ I zoomed downtown in a Z28. I was waiting at a busy intersection when I saw hundreds of women marching in the street. I thought I was witnessing an ERA march, only to discover that it was Norton Walker crossing the street followed by his usual array of women. Later I cought up with him in the locker which is a world renown gambling casino. Norton gave me a guided tour of his poker palace. We stumbled onto Doug Mraz, Scott Kittlemann, Shay Beyer, and Snappy Schillinger who quit teaching to become a professional gambler. They were playing draw poker. As I approached them Doug was raking in the green. I asked, How are you guys? Doug answered with a grin, Yep, reckon she's a pretty good day today, but I don't know! Scott looked disheartened and said, I have to win the next hand or they will repossess Kim's fur coat. Then he brightened up and said, Well as long as they don't take the Farari. Snappy gave us a sheepish grin, opened his coat and pulled out another roll of tens. Shay said, Snappay! and chuckled. We visited awhile and then I moved on. As I walked out to get in my car I heard the booming voice of a woman drill sargent. Quickly I looked to the noise to discover Aileen Ward chasing fifty overweight people around the block. She was shouting, Move those spare tires or you'll carry it around the re t of your lives! Hustle, move! As she sprinted by I noticed the emblem on her sweat suit which read, WARD FAT FARM. I continued on my journey only to find myself at the track and arena. I turned off the engine just in time to hear. wDog- gone it Russ, If you would have caught the heals we would have had an 8 flat. Rus said, But Wally, you have to catch the head first. I knew right away that Jerry Keith and Russell Rose were still attempting to master the art of roping. I wandered around for a while when I came upon a familiar face talking into a microphone. It was Miss Rodeo America Tana LaBree. She signed a contract with Blair Rodeo as a commentator. I didn't get to talk to her because she was interviewing Roy Cooper. I went to the stock show just in time to see the ending of the Hereford competition. The owner of the grand champion bull was Jaci Horner. I learned later that she owns the biggest cattle ranch in the U.S. 66 I was off on my journey once again. I was driving peaceably, obeying the law when a little red cax' hipped out in front of me and was hit by a green and white van. Two women got out and T recognized them as Sally Knapp and Lori Munro. A police- woman appeared at the scene. It was Peggy Malenovsky. Of course, I got out to reminence old times. I learned that Sally, shortly after graduation was going to marry Tom Hutton but got mixed up and married Tim instead. Lori Munro told me that she and Jule Walter are the two highest paid secretaries in the state. They both are the private secretaries of the prestigious T. Don Carey,Attorney at law. And Peggy, after reporting the accident, came back and told me that she would soon be the first woman police chief of Qcalaka. That’s where brains will get you! Peggy also told me that Jitt Walter now coaches pro basketball. Her team is the 1991 NBA Champions. I decided to go out and visit Cynthia Wolff. I then learned that she no longer lived in the continental TJ.S. She is the wife of a Marine Corp Commandant. She also builds bridges in Guam. Rather than going to Guam I vent to the bank to cash a check. Once I got there I wasn't too surprized to learn that Melanie Buck was the current director of the First National Bank of Ekalaka, and her husband replaced his father. Cup Quade, as the bank president. Mel told me that Karen King has really slowed down. She married Frank Nies. They are now the proud owners of the F K Stanard. I inquired about Kyla, and Mel told me that she still goes for younger men. In fact she married one, and they now live in Circle. I decided to go see how the new school fared these past ten years. As I drove by I noticed Lisa White out on the football field shouting orders. Pull your arm back, Now, let it sail. A spear sliced through the air and Lisa shouted If you want to break my javlin record you're going to have to practice your form. I stopped in for a chat and Lisa informed me that she is now the coach of the CCHS track team. While visiting with her I learned that Lori Brence is down in Broadus, helping raise quarter horses. Well, I had better go. I have an appointment with the chief of staff at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Jacqueline Speelmon. 7 Gary Smith Class Poem Now is the time to say goodbye, We hug each other, and try not to cry. CLASS HISTORY We entered the halls of the old CCHS as 27 scared and nervous freshmen. We elected Shay Beyer as president, Tana LaBree was second in charge. Cynthia Wolff learned to write notes as sec.-treas., and Jacque Speelmon represented us in the student council. Mr. Don Schillinger and Mr. Randy Stephens were the lucky people who got to sponsor us. The rest of the class consisted of Lori Brence, Johnny Brown, Melanie Buck, Don Carey, Fat Coleman rKalstroo), Justin Guyer. Mikel Higgins, Jaci Horner, Deb Hutton (Kortum), Jerry Keith, Sally Knapp, Peggy Kalenovsky, Doug Mraz, Lori Munro, Russell Rose. Aileen Ward, and Lisa White. Norton Walker joined us at semester time. ,. . - , . . The class of '81 was blessed with 3 sets of twins though it was a blessing in disguise. They are Leo and Letoy Farnsworth, Karen and Kyla King, and Jitt and Jule Walter. Our money making project was a quilt raffle which raised the class fund substantially• We Started our sophomore year, passing through the odd—sox craze, a little less nervous, but just as crazy. We elected Jacque Speelmon as president. Lori Brence was vice-president, Jule Walter improved her penmanship as sec.-treas., and Mikel Higgins had the job of repre- senting us in the student council. We were 32 strong with the addition of Beth Elmore (Sterns), Gary Smith, Kevin Stout, and Cheri Walker who decided to leave us at mid-term. Our big project for the year was a chili supper even though chili and sophomore couldn't be spelled correctly. Mrs. Carol Carter joined Mr. Schillinger at sponsoring this great class. Finally, we became an upperclass class. As juniors we elected Lori Brence as head organizer, Lori Munro was vice-president, Lisa White got the honor of note writing and bookkeep- ing, and Jule Walter was representative to the student council. Beth Elmore (Sterns) decided to move a little faster in her classes and graduated with the class of '30. Pat Coleman (Kalstrom) and Debbie Hutton (Kortum) were nowhere to be found. Mr8. Pat Vasky joined Mr. Snappy Schillinger as sponsors, and with enormous help from the class, they blew most of the money raised previously on a devastatingly beautiful prom. The theme was You Decorated My Life. Our FINAL year began. A big 81 was mysteriously painted on the highway to proclaim our reign. A reign which began in the NEW CCHS. We were surprized by the disapiftrance of 2 classmates, Kevin Stout and Johnny Brown, which left us with 27. However, Mike Watts appeared to make our final tally 28. Goofy Gary Smith was elected president, Justin Guyer was his right hand man, and Karen King filled the sec.-treas. spot. Mr. Schillinger and Mrs. Vaskty completed their duty as sponsors. This was the year of our biggest project, GRADUATING. Which we did with a sigh of relief. 69 Class Motto: Memories of our yesterdays open the doors for our tomorrows. . .
