Peterson is sponsor for the Class of 1939. 5 THE CLASS OP 1939 Edwin Loken Helen Frye Vice President President Dorothy McKnight Jennie Ixm Fowler Marie C, Peterson Secretary Treasurer Sponsor School opened with twenty seniors. None have dropped and the class gained Jay Stanley at the beginning of the second semester. The class held a meeting September 21 to decide whether they preferred to get sweaters or rings. Rings were favored and a salesman summoned.. Rings of sterling silver with inlaid pearl were chosen. The class colors are lemon and orchid, and the class flower is the yellow rose. The motto Suc- cess crowns patient effort” is on the announcement, The Adorable Age was given with a cast of nine as the class play on March 25. Maxine Powell was candidate for All-school Queen. Helen Frye, Maxine Powell, Edwin Loken, Robert Scruggs, and James Nies won basketball letters; James Nies and Marvin Douglas had football letters; James Nies, Arthur McKnight and Marvin Douglas are on the track team; Eddie Loken was table tennis champion of the school. Anna Lee Cleveland is valedictorian and Dorothy McKnight, salutatorian. Others ranking high are Helen Frye, Maxine Powell, and Arthur McKnight. Forty-eight per cent of the seniors were honor roll students at some time during the year. The class presented a one-act play, Neighbors , on October 15; and for the amateur program on November 19, the class entered a modern version of Pocahontas and Captain John Smith . The junior girls placed second in the inter- class basketball tournament, and the boys were third. Letter winners for basketball were Phyllis Putnam, Mary Barbara McLean, Mildred Macnab, Ger- trude McKnight, and Archie Brantley. Archie also earned a track letter. . The class play, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer , was given December 17. Nina Beach was the class candidate for the All- school Queen at the Coed Prom. b 9 Alice Connolly, Mildred Macnab, James Overn, June Burch, and Mary Barbara McLean have been on the honor roll every time this year. Of the original thirty-four members, only four dropped out. They v ere Mavis Gundlach, Betty Morrison, Jewel Pyles, and William Rose. The class gave the Prom in honor of the seniors on May 12. Adz-ms President Vice President Secretary and Treasurer Sponsor The Class of 1941 held its first meeting of the year on September 9t with forty-seven members present. They elected their class officers, and made plans to initiate the freshmen. They initi- ated the freshmen 7 ith a program and a dance, Sep- tember 16. The sophomore class gave a backward party on April 14. They served lunch to the Broadus basket- ball team when they played here. The boys won the interclass tournament in basket- ball. Tommy Heggen was second in the table tennis tournament. There were eight sophomore lettennen. On November the 19, the sophomore class, under the direction of Miss Evonsen, presented a short play about an auction sale for the amateur contest. Then in March, the girls presented the play, Mrs. Apple and Her Corps, and the boys presented A Convention of Papas, directed by Mrs. Adams. The members who have been on the honor roll all year are Sybil Sjoblom, LaVeme Malmquist, Jean Malmquist, Margaret Owen, and Wilma Kennedy. The sophomore candidate, Alice Bazil, was elect- ed All-school Queen at the Coed Prom. The pupils who have dropped out of the class are Daisy Cline, William Cline, Marvin Dillon and Har- riet Pierce. They also served lunch to the Ollie basketball team. 1 Two freshmen received letters for basketball: Ruth Albert and Carsten Loken. The class placed third in the inter-class track meet. Mr. Rowley directed the class stunt, The Hobo , and it won first prize in the Skit Night contest. Ruth Albert and Mary Anderson have been on the honor roll all year, Ruth leading it on two occas- ions with a straight A average. Velma Hecksthorn was a candidate for All-school Queen. She v as second in the voting. About twenty-five girls responded. T ABLE T LIN IN IS About thirty students showed interest in table tennis when Mr. Greer introduced the game after the close of the basketball season in March. Only a few of the girls kept on playing. The bbys. hhdr'a tournament, which Edwin Loken won in a final game played at an assembly program. Tommy Heggen was runner-up. TRACK The interclass track meet was held on Wednesday and Thursday, April 26 and 27, with about ten boys competing. , The seniors won the meet with forty-five points. The juniors were .second with nineteen points;’ The freshmen were third with sixteen; the sophomores were fourth with fifteen.. The Club decided to take charge of the cheering section at athletic events. Alice Connolly, Phyllis Putnam, and Jerome Emswiler were appointed to act as cheer leaders. Skit Night, the C Club gave the stunt, Colored Wedding.M On November 4, the group held their initiation party. Dancing was the attraction of the evening. Members initiated were: James Nies, Harold Stitser Ross Keith, Jerome .Emswiler,, Marvin Douglas, and Sybil Sjoblom. The lettermen had charge of the selling of act- ivity tickets to the students. .
