Colonel Theodore K Long Tale 1878 LLB UR Memory edrtron would not be complete without a caption reading In memory of Colonel Theodore K Long but we the class of 48 feel that he deseryes much more than a cap tron perhaps eyen more than we can grye for Colonel Long was the founder of our Alma Mater Perhaps he founded more than a school for we strll practise hrs rdeals of making boys into useful and successful men Colonel Long was born on a farm rn Greenwood Townshrp east of Mrllerstown Pennsyl sanra He prepared himself for Yale by attending New Bloomfield Academy and later attended Yale as a law student In 1885 he marrred Kate Carson He worked as Editor of the Daily Pioneer of Mandan North Dakota rn 1892 rt wasnt untrl 189-1 that he began hrs law practice during which time he was states attorney for the drstrrct west of the Mrssourr Rryer He be came an actryc member of the Chicago Crty council and for a time was a member of the State Legrslature until he lost hrs only son Carson The lost was a great shoclc to hrm and soon after he resigned hrs positron on the Crty Council In 1914 he returned to the scene of hrs hrgh school days purchased New Bloomheld Academy and proceeded to malce mayor changes H changed its mme to Carson Long as a lryrng m morral to hrs son He made rt a boy s school erected new buildings and incorporated a mrlrtary organization into rts foundation Carson Long has alwrys been a non profit school and once when the Colonel was asked why hc deyoted so much of hrs time and money to an undertaking that netted hrm no financial returns he replied It has not only supplred me wrth an occupation but has afforded me the busiest years of my lrfe and although rt has made large demands on my time rs well as n m prryate fortune I haxe neyer before enjoyed any busrness or call ng that has yrelded such that the greatest pleasures rn the world come from doing for ohers The man whose lrfe rs keyed to money making dcrryes a certarn krnd of negrtrxe pleasure from the success that comes from the effrcrent management of hrs busrness 0 profession But the pleasure so experienced rs rnhnrtesrmal as compared wrth the thrrll and pleasures that are the rmmedrate results of paying the way for boys to become useful and succ ss ul men Colonel Theodore K Long passed quietly from our midst on December 28 19-17 The news of hrs death was receryed by hrs relatrxe closer frrends and the corps as the passing of a great man On Wednesday December 31 1947 funeral scryrces were held at hrs home The Maples and on anuary 2 1948 hrs remarns were cremated and lard to rest at the Rose Hrll Mausoleum rn Chicago Below rs a poem that the Colonel wrote to be read at hrs funeral It rn rtself rs self ex planatory as to the type of man Colonel Theodore Kepner Lone was Deafla Oh Death Thou who hast been the dread Of countless ages past Implantrng secret fear Wrthrn the doubtrng heart And causing mighty hrefs And powerful lsrngs To tremble at thy gruesome fetish I fear thee not 'Iowarcl thy urgent portal I approach A appy wayfa r Nearrng home If thou be thc sum and end of all The grrm finality of lrfe Thou brddest me welcome To a soothing restfulness Of sweet oalryron If thy open portrl ls the gate ayar To 'rfe beyond the graye I pass rn blrssful quretude And breathe a last farewell As on the wings of rmmortalrty I soar to realms on hrgh WI ere sunts and de lr ones XVut rn loyrng brotherhood Oh Death thou has no strng O1 grate thou hast no yrctory . f , . . . .-a.
