TAKING IT IN STRIDE This year ' s Boys ' Varsity Cross Country Team (led by Capt. Elbert Buddy Twist and Coached by W. Mocnik) placed 2nd in the Marine League. Buddy, a hard-working ath- lete, is among the top three milers in the Los Angeles area. Twist is a dedicated worker, and gives cross country his all. Also supporting the Colts in their victory, were Angelo Schmidt and Carlos Linares. The J.V. team, with standouts Jose Martinez and Michael Walker, also placed 2nd in Marine League. They lost only to San Pedro. Doing well for an inexperienced group, the Girls ' Varsity Team placed 4th in Marine League. Although this young team did not do as well as they had hoped, their Colt pride never faded. Sophomore Irma Duran was a great inspiration to her team- mates. The Sophomore Team ' s league re- cord of 2-14 gave the young Colts 4th place in the Marine League. Their wins were against Gardena and Locke High Schools. Jose Linares and Joey Sablan aided this young Colt team to victory. I Boys ' Varsity (L-R) Row 7: Coach W. Moc- nik. M. Howard, A. Schmidt, A. Baca. Ro: 2: E. Twist, C. Linares, j. Ryan, V. UN IHt KIUHI IKALK Although the Boys Varsity track team has never won the Marine League championship, Coach Moc- nik felt that this year would be dif- ferent. With a well balanced group in all events we have a chance, stat- ed Coach Mocnik. The team ' s chances were hurt with the loss of Jamie Williams to a knee injury dur- ing a preseason track meet. Al- though the team relied on Jamie greatly, they were strongly being led by A. Goree, B. Twist, V, Barner and D. Smith. All these outstanding ath- letes along with their fellow team- mates had the confidence of Coach Mocnik ' s to go all the way to victory. The Girls Varsity, being small in numbers, was made up of a very young team. With this factor in mind, the future for these Colts looks very bright. As defending league champions, the Bee ' s again had a strong team and a very good chance of being successful in recapturing their title. The Cee ' s, last year ' s league champs, were very few in numbers this year. With this disability, the team ' s chances of doing well were seriously hurt. V GIRLS VARSITY- 1st row (L-R): Tanya Dot- son, Ladonna Smith, Tammy Carruthcrs, Nichclle Ragland, Sharon Stoncburg. 2nd row (L-R): Valerie Humphrey, Latrice Swisher, Rebecca Rodriguez, Angela Peo- ples. 2) Victor and Irma team up to make victory ours. 3) Vince is waiting for the start of the race. 4) Valerie ' s off to a good start. 5) Endurance will soon pay off for Angelo.
