THEY PURSUE EXCELLENCE IN ' 84 Ted (Tahan) Kim Math and Science STARTED in 1948 tor Los Angeles area high schools, Bank of America ' s Achievement Awards had developed into one of the most comprehensive and highly re- spected student awards programs in the nation. Todav, it includes more than 300,000 graduating sen- iors from virtually every high school in California with annual cash awards exceeding $345,000. Bank of America sponsors the program in the belief that every society depends upon the individuals it pro- duces. An educated citizenry of tomorrow will come only if the students of today are encouraged in their pursuit of excellence. Michael Aldapa Business Education Betty Gil Fine Arts 212 The selection process begins at the indi- vidual schools. Three contenders were selected for the next level of competition. Here, winners from approximately 12 neighboring schools participate in group discussions in front of judges of educators and civic leaders. This year, the three placque winners were very respected students. ANGELA HALILI, winning third place in the zone event, re- presented Carson in the Liberal Arts field. Angela was an active senior. CARE ON THE ROAD IS REWARDED The purpose of the Drivers Ed A ward program is to encourage students to take a greater interest in developing good driving habits through their driv- er education courses by recognition of excellent achievements. In recognition of any student who has received TOO o in the Department of Motor Vehicles Road Test, and who has completed a course in Driver Edu- cation classroom and laboratory phase, the Automobile Club of Southern Cali- fornia provides to the school a 9 x 12 walnut plaque with the name of the first student who qualifies for the award. Happily, we have four new students to add to our Plaque. They are: Raul Villabos, Yolanda Kelly, Jolene Smith and Jesse Oani. Congratulations for a job well done! (L to R) Raul Villabos, Yolanda Kelly, (Asst. Principal,) Mr. Gunderson, Jolene Smith and Jesse Oani NISSAN HELPS WHEN NEEDED Most Carson students are un- aware of the quiet work being done by Nissan Corporation ' s Public Relations department. With the help of Janet Leiker, Nissan is actually an active part of the Carson campus. Nissan has adopted Carson as its school and as such, has helped out financially on many projects. Grants of $500.00 were given to the English de- partment (to help buy books for the Pacific Islander Asian American Lit. class) Medi-Colts accepted another grant, and the Health department was able to purchase many important film strips because of Nissan ' s help. Thank you, Nissan!
