CARNAGE IN BEIRUT Mideast Madness Hits the Marines IT WAS SUNDA Y morning in Lebanon, the beginning of an October day. 200 Marines slept before beginning duties as part of a U.S. peace-keeping force. Suddenly, a truck full of dynamite deliberately crashed into the building and exploded. 147 Ma- rines died; 60 were wounded. FOR THE U.S. Armed Forces, it was the worst disas- ter since the end of the Viet Nam war. America was stunned. The Marines had tried to hold Lebanon in peace — instead the forces of violence had brought them down. The U.S. faced the realization that it was a new kind of world, and a new kind of war. THE YEAR IN SPORTS PRO FOOTBALL: Mickey Man-in and the Raiders have the Redskin ' s number in Su- per Bowl XVIII. Jim Plunkett pitched ' em long and short in his second Super Bowl win. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: UCLA started 0-3- 1, but a victory over Washington helped it to the Rose Bowl. TRACK AND FIELD: U.S. athletes prepare for the sum- mer Olympics to be held in Los Angeles in 1984. Heptathlete Jackie Joyer of the U.S. made great strides at the World Cham- pionships. BOXING: Hot dog Scott Frank didn ' t live up to promises against WBC champ Larry Holmes. 210 CLASS OF ' 84 TAKES TIME TrMl DIFFICUL T DA YS INVASION: The U.S. sent 60,000 troops to the once sleepy island of GRENADA, rescuing hun- dreds of American students and bringing down a chaotic Marxist regime. The sudden use of force brought both praise and protest from around the world. In a world growing ever smaller, the U.S. learned to face anger as well as applause. 20 YEARS AGO IOHN KENNEDY ' S LIFE ended one Friday afternoon in Dallas, TWENTY YEARS ago, this year. 1983 had seen his memory re- main bright in the national heart. Kennedy was in the White House so short a time, many feel he cannot be judged against oth- er Presidents. Regardless of one ' s political views of him, Ken- nedy remains an example for the young leaders of tomorrow. VIDEO VIEW MUSIC: It is no longer enough to hear rock. Only seeing is believing these days. Wild and mild short subject films have blended with the top music stars to create the newest form of record : VIDEO. Now music lovers watch their favorite stars while listening to them sing. The VIDEO has probably changed the recording industry for all time, and many think for the better. SEW HOMETOWN ' BOYS SUPERBOWL SUNDA Y: Los An- geles was nearly a ghost town; if people had not flown to Florida to watch the L.A. Raiders, they were glued to their television sets. Suddenly the Raiders were whole-heartedly accepted as the hometown team. It ivjs 21-3 at the half, and the Raider heroes were a couple of guys named Squirek and Jensen. The Skins drove 70 yards for the TD that made it 21-9. The next LA drive stretched 74 yards and turned the lights out for the Skins; the game was an official blow out. THE MTV VIDEO: In the mid- 1980 ' s, MTV is the place to fee. MTV was the most researched channel in television history, claimed Robert Roganti, MTV ' s Vice Pres. in charge of sales. He is credited with developing the catch phrase, I WANT MY MTV. Video clearly has made a massive and lasting impact on) the recording industry. PRIVATE
