The Key Club, which is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, is set up as a service organization. The object of this club is to serve both the school and the community. Key Club collects for the Heart Fund, cleans up the football field and concession stands after all home games, ushers for concerts, takes the mentally retarded around town to see Christmas lights, and provides Christmas decorations for the school. Key Club also participates in a basketball game against the faculty and provides a scholarship for an outstanding Key Club member. The highlight of the year is attending the district con- vention where they learn more about Key Club ideals, elect dis- trict officers, and generally have three days and two nights of fun. .gfii ,.f.f ' A I , 5 2 1 Organizations A ctivities ,1 21 m mf '- kixw. .2 siw an . -ay 3 wsgww K-mg Rada gem Q : Q ' ' nf ' m f .. 23.4.44 1 Q gan L f 5 :az :fm M 'H H W :E Deutscher Verein J Q f, W-A . .M :XP .E I: - H l- I ' ,iii fl 1.1 ' Q I Ei . lixir, 1 H 1 i fu' ll 1 'lla ff sv l I J if ' le fi if +l1 f slew- ffl, . 4' :A 5 ' 12' i,v1 Y, v V l 57 '3 li' ' V ifiwxi li lil fl 'J - i I ' ' 1 T2 lr: 3: ,li ii ': 1 lf. Not hindered by the fact that the band bleachers are so far away from the rest of the Carrollton crowd and the cheerleaders, the band showed spirit and determination by using their own cheers plus the added effect of drumrolls, trumpet fanfares, and cymbal crashes. S tudent Council To be elected a member of the Stu- dent Council is one of the highest honors a student can receive while attending CHS. Its main concern is to work as a whole for the betterment of both the school and the students. This year for the first time, the Stu- dent Council hosted a State Board of Education Mini Conference. They also have scheduled at least one assembly each month. This includes CHS movie night. Mike Mistler, Student Body President: Shelly Martin, Student Body Manager. Many students at CHS brag about their school spirit and point to their many pictures in the yearbook showing the various school clubs and organizations of which they are members. Unfortunately most organizations have some dead wood : students who are present for the first meeting to join up. and again when yearbook pictures are taken. Some Clon't even bother to pay their dues. Active participation in school organizations and clubs helps build school spirit However many students are putting on show . Did you contribute your energies and time to the clubs that you belong to. or are you a twice a year membern? as S in Wg ,, mfg W Q :lair Rags? Awami E A . V fA,I:r,.5g,ii2-E Weigel 3- - V - 1 i . He demanded many hours of hard work and preparation from his men and victories ensued. But with the moments of triumph came also the frustration of defeat by narrow margins. He was impressed with the team's desire to win and ap- preciative of his able assistants, coaches Roesel and Johnson. 54 The Trojan's varsity offense was co-ordinated by Asst. Coach Roesel. He devoted many hours to building up this year's winning team. The Trojan defensive squad was directed Asst. Coach johnson, who also served l head coach for the freshman team. While the other students were still sitting around last summer, the football team had already begun practicing. This has been a year of tennis enthusiasm. Billy jean King's victory over Bobby Riggs proved more than just a personal victory. Many women recognized it as the long needed justification of women's equality to men. Girl's tennis, being the first girl's sport at C.H.S. has been greeted with a general feeling of it's about time we girls got to do something around here. Despite this feeling very few girls tried out for the team. The girls who did try out found that it was rewarding, both to learn what it means to par- ticipate in athletic competition, and also to represent the girls at C.H.S. Last spring the team got off to a good start tying for first with Rich- mond. Soph. Elaine Cauthon, the champ, won first in singles. This season the team won second behind Lexington. Susie Houseworth and Carol Willis, Sophs, were the 1st place winners in doubles. The B-team also won a lst in doubles with Patti Mistler, J r., and Cathy McGrew, Fresh. Superintendent - -El? ' K Y Mr. Irwin R. Thomas To Starla Kenton, Editor, and to all the staff members who have worked so diligently to make this book a success, I commend you. It is our hope that the TROIC, in years to come as you thumb through its pages, will trigger fond and nostalgic memories of your days in CHS. To the Class of 74 .... I extend my sincere desire for your success and happiness. I hope your days at CHS will contribute toward this. To the underclassmen of CHS .... I extend a challenge to continue the CHS traditions we cherish and to strive to surpass the achievements of those who have gone before you. Sincerely yours, Irwin R. Thomas Superintendent LX WAf,i3g1w film W S S S L ' 3 Gear Underclassmen: The year we have been waiting for is now almost over. It seems as though everyone can't wait to be a Senior-to have seniority and more special privileges. Yet, there is more to being a Senior than this. It is a time of decision as to what you will make of your life, and it's a period of uncertainty. T The past 12 years are ones we will never forget. No one will be able to take away our memories of CHS and the friendships we will always cherish. There are many discouraging developments that have occurred during our Senior year such as the Watergate Scandal, Energy Crisis, and the resigning of Vice-President Spiro Agnew. We, the younger generations, are always complaining about what the older generation has done. We, the class of 1974, hope to live up to our motto. May we. God helping us, be part of the answer, not part of the problem. The Class Of '74 Le L 'F-X7 ! This year's Homecoming week was busy and exciting for everyone involved. Float work began on Monday and continued until Friday morning when they were judged in front of the school. Thursday was the snake dance and bonfire, a tradition of C.H.S. And Friday was the day of Homecoming with a parade in the afternoon, a football game that night, the crowning of the new queen at half-time and the Homecoming dance after the game. 'AQ .f I, Ewiqa. After many months of anticipation by the students and a week of hard work by the Juniors. the prom finally arrived. It all began as the anxious Juniors started building the framework and supports which were to be transported later to the gym. As prom grew closer and closer, the gym began to take form of the sidewalks in Paris, complete with Can-Can girls, the Eiffel Tower, and the Arc de Triomphe. Friday before the Prom was the most hectic of all. All of the Juniors were dismiss- ed from their classes to work. The class spon- sors, Mr. Schweder, Mrs. Redford and Mr. Snyder, had their hands full trying to keep students from taking coffee breaks and go- ing out for lunch. Saturday the juniors put finishing touches on the gym and the entrance, while the other students waited the coming night. The '73 Prom was a success, something the Juniors can always be very proud of. An Evening In Paris Building the Arch of Triumph was a novel experience for several juniors. Apathy is a lack of feeling, emotion, interest, or concern. Apathetic students are the ones who have no interest or loyalty toward CHS. Often they are found asleep in class and do not hesitate to show their boredom. Some apathetic students never attend any school functions, while others attend only because they have nothing else to do. Many times it is the apathetic student who complains about everything associated with the school. As you pass through the following pages of the yearbook this is a question you will have to answer for yourself. Do you have spirit or are you apathetic? .lf fi' 4 At the first assembly each year it is customary for the new student officers to declare, This will be a great year at CHS and we're going to have the greatest school spirit ever, or words to that effect. In recent years however, many students at CHS showed little interest in school spirit. A sense of apathy appeared to be spreading among the student body. When the 1973-74 school year began, the situation looked serious indeed. Was school spirit something of years gone by, or was it merely suffering a lapse due to recent less-than-successful seasons by CHS athletic teams? More than just a few students began to question, Just what is school spirit? The New Student Webster Dictionary defines spirit as full of courage, concern, and energy. Is spirit necessarily tied to sporting events? Do you have to yell your lungs out at football games to prove that you have spirit? Because you don't show it by attending games, does this cause peo- ple to say you are lacking in spirit? Perhaps spirit is more a state of loyalty or an attitude which individuals share towards something they deem important and worthwhile.
