1960 The phone rang again. Janis practically dropped little Freddie as she dashed to ans- wer it. Hello Pat? ls that you again? lf you don't quit calling me up every hour I nev- er will get my work done. Now calm down, honey, l just read the headlines in the New York Times and l couldn't wait to tell you. Well, what is it that interests me more than the baby's bath right now? lt is Linda. She has done it again. Only this time instead of going in a rocket ship she was sent to China in a Super Jet! What is she supposed to talk herself out of this time? Or is she selling democracy a- gain? lnever could understand what all that blabbe ring was about. Oh, Janis, you are so shut up in your own small world that you don't realize all the exciting things that Linda has done. To make a long story short she was paid a tremend- ous sum to attempt that trip to Russia. It certainly took courage to be the first to ride that rocket ship and to go to Russia, of all places! Can't you just see her talking her way out of there. She said it took her two years but she finally got it done. l'm sure she was doing some secret detective work for the government, too. Although she never came out and said so. Oh, Pat, l just can't imagine her not telling everyone if she really was! Now, Janis, you know if her life depended on it she probably could convince herself and everyone else that she was not! Well, anyway, the paper says she was the first lady to be sent in a Super Jet. And you know what a political hot bed China is! That reporter is certainly bragging her up. It just gives me a thrifto know all the exciting things she is doing ! ' It would give me a thrill all right expecting to be killed any minute. Linda can have all the thrills. Don't worry about Linda, Janis, she can talk her way even out of China. And that American Ambassador is a dream. Linda was talking a blue streak about him last sum- mer when she was home. l'll bet she knew he was sent to China. l'm sure she would even ride a Super Jet to be dropped on his door step. And I think it is super that she is doing so much for her country. 1 just hope she gets out of there safely--Ambassador or no Ambassador. 1'll feel bet- ter when she is safe at home. l've just got to go now, Pat. Thanks for calling me. Read every thing you can about her and keep me informed. I will. l'm going to call Phyllis and Edith now and tell them. l'm sure they will want to know, too. Goodbye. 37
