From the first 19-O win over Goldendale to the 40-14 finale over Highland, the team grew in their football knowledge and close teamwork. The final season record for the squad was 7 wins and 2 losses. The Pats lost those games by a total of only 6 points. The narrow wins also earned the team the nickname 'tThe Cardiac Kids. The victories included a 13-12 thriller over East Valley and a big 14-6 Homecoming win over Cle Elum. At the Awards Banquet after the season had ended, the following received team awards: Captain - Kevin Anson Inspirational - Jerry Courcy Head Hunter - Larry Laurent Best Blocker - Andy Bush Chaplain - Doug Rich Everyone on the team enjoyed the season, and a big thanks goes to the coaches: lVIr. W l Patriot Power, the theme of Spirit Week, proved to be a close contest this year with some all-time tirsts. There were ties in three events. The seniors and juniors shared irst place in both Dress-up Day and Hat Day. A tie for third went to the freshmen and juniors in the pie-eating contest, while sophomore president Renee Riel gulped down her pie to swallow hrst. In the Mr. Irresistible contest, the senior girls managed to control themselves for the first place honors-which made a tough job of avoiding that sly little Kevin Woodard, Mr. Irresistible himself! Much debate was heard among the students as to whether the seniors or juniors would win halls. The seniors featured rafter posters saying Patriot Power in different languages. The juniors devised an original: each junior's locker had a personalized poster on it, The situation was tense. When it was announced that the seniors had won, they went into ecstasy. The week's highlight came on Friday at the assembly. There, under the direction of Father Himes, the seniors performed their thrilling skit, UThe Wizard of Spirit, which clenched first place, and the coveted Spirit Stick went to the Class of u77 for the second consecutive year. Every class contributed to the success of Spirit Week. The Carroll students all showed PATRIOT POWER with their Spirit and Pride in our school l Homecoming Royalty-King and Queen: Larry Laurent and Ann Roy, Princes and Princesses: Tim Gamache and Martha Sullivan and Andy Bush and Ann Patnode HOIVIECOIVIING The leaves had already begun to fall, a chill had filled the air, and excitement had been born in everyone's heart. With a win the night before, anticipation flowed through many. By 7:30, dates were being picked up and students, old and new, began to fill the Holiday Inn and dance to the music of Reflections. October 23 was the date, W' 37 and the theme, uTonight's the Night, ran true for many because enchantment descended upon the formally-attired couples. The Coronation of.Larry Laurent and Ann Roy highlighted the festive evening. Tim Gamache and Martha Sullivan reigned with Andy Bush and Ann Patnode as the Princes and Princesses. A.S.B. sponsored the traditional but very successful affair. 12 . W ,rg 'K Y A I s. . I ,X -V if there, Andy ! . ., R ,, ,. Their 1 and 5 season record isn't that impressive, but from that record came a lot of learning. Coach Mark Gilman brought them through with his sweet, soft voice. And with assistant coach Jerry Rogers laughing in the background, it was hard not to laugh with him. As all the seniors can attest, initiation was a smashing success. After the seniors, tiredly but craftily, suppressed and contained the young'uns, the Frosh regarded their upcoming retreat very apprehensively. The retreat proved to be very enlightening and successful, however. Too bad that Spirit Week could not have followed in the same tradition, although they did manage to overwhelm the sophomores in their hall decorations. The class started out with one thing in mind- how to raise money for junior-senior prom. Dances, hot dog sales, and chili sales helped raise the bank account. Then, in October, came a break for Spirit Week. Some things were done at the last minute, such as the skit that was put together the morning of the assembly. The Class of '78 placed second overall. From Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 the retreat at St. Peter's Seminary filled the participants with happiness and prayer. New friendships were made, old ones cemented. It was a very successful retreat as the class grew closer together. Coming back to school meant resuming work. The juniors had to deal with such things as a mock Presidential debate, alight bulb sale, and the Prom. , All too soon, the year came to a close. The main idea learned from the experience was a sense of responsibility-actions aitect not only oneself but also every person one is associated with. The Seniors scaled academic heights by taking lVlr. lVlaucione's Introduction to Logic. Eighty-nine seniors marched down the aisle to the traditional Pomp and Circumstance. Teresa Rullman's survey of the class history elicited many a chuckle and guffawg Janet Vorenkamp then urged the graduates always to remember that each of them has a unique contribution to make to nourish the future. Sr. Monica Schmidt delivered the Graduation Address, using as her theme a compendium of song titles, she inspired the graduates to carry a joyful sound in their hearts and into the world. Recently-installed Bishop William Skylstad next presented diplomas, after which Fr. Patnode presented scholarship awards. So, with diplomas in hand, the Class of '77 made their way out of Holy Family Church. They looked promisingly toward the future, but will always remember this part of their past.
