To aid in the instruction of the band, another staff member, Mr. Richard Rogers, was added. In addition to the Majorettes and Lancers, a new Color Guard was started with Terry Brown as Captain. The band distinguished themselves during the fall with their half-time shows of color and pageantry. The football season was brought to a fitting climax with the winning of Superior trophies in all categories of the Selma Marching Band Festival. Officers The band officers are the duly elected governing body of the band. They make rules and policies and insure that the members abide them. They review all plans for the band with the directors and aid in the decisions that concern the band. Band Captain Coleman Campbell was the leader of this group and he was assisted by Drum Major David Bolich and Lieutenants. Drum Major David Bolich Officers: L to R: Janet Snellgrove, Mike Robinson, Earl Matthews, Jan Barkett, Donna Murrah, Aubrey Matthews, David Bolich, and Captain Coleman Campbell. Color Guard This was the first year for our color guard. Mr. Mosely selected Terry Brown to serve as its captain and he proved to be a worthy one. The group studied privately with Ron Hart of Troy State University. They worked long and hard in this initial year and plans are being made to augment their number for next year’s band. 72 Lancers The Lancers were led this year by Captain Tina Brown. They were elected for this honor last spring and the girls have added much to the color of the marching band. Many hours are spent coordinating their manuevers to fit the music and their dedication was an inspiration to all. Lancers: T to B: Tina Brown, Virginia Parker, Ann Bean, Lindy Lisenby, Jan Jackson, Donna Murrah, Marcia McKowsky, Mildred McCormick. 73 Stage Band Stage Band: First row: Terry Brown, Coleman Campbell, Greg Simpson, Sam McKinney. Second Row: Steve Angle, David Bolich, Hugh Taylor. Third Row: Earl Matthews, Mike Robinson, David Johnson, Greg Sand. Fourth Row: Bobby Baker, Aubrey Matthews. The stage band is now in its second year of existence. This year in addition to playing locally at functions requiring a dance band, they played on area television. The primary purpose of the stage band is to provide the members with an opportunity to play this type music. In the regular band, there is no time to study and play music of this nature. Band Award Kenneth Smith A new award this year is that of the Kenneth Smith Band Award. The award amounts to a trophy and a summer scholarship given to the most worthy member of the Junior class. Qualifications include musical progress, general attitude, and contributions made to the band. Nominations are made to the band director and he makes the final decision on the winner. The award is made in memory of a former member of the band who displayed those many qualities in his everyday life that are mentioned in the award. Jan Barkett — Head Majorette Marilyn Judah Faith Anne Smith The Majorettes were led by Head Majorette Jan Barkett. She made all final decisions in regard to the routines the girls performed and was the sole leader who insured their success. Jan and Faith Anne Smith studied at Joycliffe Twirling Camp in Reinhardt, Georgia, while Marilyn Judah and Sandy Flowers studied with Shirley Ross. The routines displayed by the girls were a welcome addition to the overall appearance of the Marching Band. They met their other all-state members from all over the state March 9, 10, and 11 on the campus of the University of Alabama, where they rehearsed together, played a concert, and made a record. Mr. John H. Mosley Mr. Mosley has been band director at Carroll High for thriteen years. After graduating from Auburn University, he taught school in Dadeville, Alabama, for one year. The band has grown from a small group band of thrity-three to a one-hundred-five piece marching band. Mr. Richard Rodgers Mr. Richard E. Rodgers is the assistant band director. He is a recent graduate of Auburn University where he majored in Music Educa- tion. His principal instruments were the snare drum and trumpet. He is a fine performer on many instruments and has found a warm place in our hearts. This is his first year as a teacher. Although his first duties are with the Cadet Band and with beginners, he has been quite active with the Carroll High School Band also. 78 79 M SGT. STEWART Col. For the first time the Eagles had a full staff of coaches that included: Head Coach Tom McClendon and assistants Glenn Taylor, Johnny Turner, Clint Floyd, and Larry Touchstone. Under their guidance the Eagles had some very big wins which included both Dothan and Enterprise. Coach Tom McClendon’s Eagles owned a 21-0 lead in the second quarter en route to a 28-14 victory. It was only the third Ozark victory over a Tiger grid team in 24 meetings and the first time for back-to-back wins. Dothan was actually never in the game although there was a glim- mer of hope late in the third quarter. Ever In CHS History 106 Ozark Over Dothan And Enterprise Ozark 35 - Enterprise 32 Playing in bone chilling weather, the Carroll High Eagles warmed the hearts of Ozark foot- ball fans by claiming a 35-32 victory over arch rival Enterprise, the second win in three years for the Eagles over the Wildcats. The high scoring contest was essentially a battle of Ozark’s passing game against the Enterprise ground attack. Ozark’s devastating combination of Allan Kelley to Wilbur Jackson was the knockout punch that brought the Eagles from behind 32-28, to the final decision, 35-32. 107 The 1969-70 Football Banquet The guest speaker for the banquet this year was the honorable John Davis Crow. He was truly a fine man to talk to a group of athletes because of the many honors he has received along with his football experiences. To name a few, he was a graduate of Texas A M, where he was coached by Paul “Bear” Bryant. In his last year at A M he was awarded the Heisman Trophy. This is the highest award a college football player can receive. Then his professional football career began. First he played with the Saint Louis Cardinals for seven years. After this he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers where he played for another four years. In 1968 John David Crow retired from professional football after eleven years, but he didn’t retire from football because he is now assistant coach at the University of Alabama coaching the running backs. What would the 1969-70 season have been without these five men? As each member of the team knows, it would have been nothing. They devoted their time and effort to the one thing that makes it all worth it: VICTORY. A special thanks goes out from everyone in the school: from left to right; defensive line Coach John Turner; Offensive Line Coach Glenn Taylor; Offensive Back Coach Clint Floyd; Defensive Back Coach Larry Touchstone; Head Coach Tom McClendon. 108 I Wiin Eddie Footey SPCaker J°h DaVid Cr°W' Bebe Bryan- Head Coach Tom McClendon, Allen Kelly, George As in the past, a main part of the banquet was the awarding of the trophies. This is just a small reward for the leadership and devotion in which each of the recipients showed. Like always the team voted on the players they thought worthy of the trophies. The first trophy awarded was the Most Valuable Player trophy, to Allen Kelly. It was given by the Quarterback Club in honor of Dr. G.R. Smith. The trophy is given in honor of Dr. Smith because he was instrumental in establishing the Quarterback Club. The next trophies given were the VFW trophies, given to the Most Valuable Back, Wilbur Jackson, and to the Most Valuable Lineman, Bobby Bright. These trophies were presented by Barker Brummett. After the VFW presented their trophies to the Offensive players, the Quarterback Club presented their trophies to the Most Valuable Defensive Lineman, Eddie Foote, and the Most Valuable Defensive Back, George Williams. These trophies were given by Head Coach Tom McClendon. Then Mr. Sam Carroll came forward to award the Dennis Johnson Trophy to the Most Valuable Defensive Player, whom the team con- sidered to be George Williams. This trophy is given in honor of Dennis Johnson for his outstanding defensive playing. 10 Cheerleaders The Cheerleaders held summer practices and at- tended a clinic at Troy State University. The Eagles started slow but after a Christmas break, came on with fire under them. They showed the great poise and leadership installed in them by Coach Cecil Skinner. By winning the big and close games, the Eagles showed the mark of a great team. The captains of the Eagles were Trot Carroll and John Runkle. This year truly showed that lack of height and experience can be overcome by desire and the old spirit at C H S of winning. BUBBA WOODS — a small forward who showed that he wasn’t going to be a patsy under the backboard. Bubba was a great rebounder and good shooter. He probably improved more than any of the Eagles. HAVING ANOTHER YEAR, Bubba should be a great leader next year. A FINE picker upper best describes Bubba Woods. JOHN RUNKLE - a man that came on to give the Eagles the forward play that was so needed. John, being a senior, has shown the leadership that is so valuable. He is a good rebounder and accurate shooter. A great captain and Fine boy best describes John Runkle. TROT CARROLL — the senior guard who has come on to be one of the best in the team. He is a deadly outside shooter and also an adequate rebounder. Trot, being a captain, has shown Fine leadership and poise that is so much needed. A take charge player best describes Trot Carroll. CHUCK COX — the man that gave everything he had. Even though their record was not good, the Baby Eagles gave all they had and worked hard. This year’s team was not big but small and quick. Out biggest victories of the season were over Dothan and Selma on their home courts and here in Ozark. Our No. I, II, and No. Ill men graduated last year. We had seven men travel on the team with us. There are three new additions to the team, they are: Jim Woods, David Benefield, and William Andrews. 124 Track Team The 1969-70 track season proved to be a outstanding one as the Carroll High Track record was unblemished. This goes to prove that strenuous preparation was taken. The track team maintained and proved worthy of their record as they placed runner up in the Selma Invitational track meet. Previous plans for the 69-70 season are to compare with the record of last year. Some of the prominent returners are Don Howard, Fredrick Beasley, Robert Miggins, Mike Thomberry, and Terry Updyke. Wilbur Jackson, a new comer to the Carroll High Track Team, should be a real promising factor along with a group of willing sophomores. 125 Trot Carroll Bubba Woods Golf Team The 1969-70 Carroll High School Golf Team is looking forward to another season. The Juniors of 1970 are proud to be a part of a great school like Carroll High. They have demonstrated that pride by upholding all school standards as well as by setting good examples for the underclassmen. They have also shown, in numerous small ways, their appreciation of the guidance given them by the faculty and administration. In a serious effort to raise money for the Junior-Senior prom, the juniors topped the school’s record for candy sales. They further showed their energy and culture when they put on a play, “The Passing of the Third Floor Back.” The Junior Class Ann Akridge Sue Amundson Kim Andrews Mary Arnold 182 Darlene Austin Pat Bagwell Anna Bailey Mike Baltzell Helen Banks Paul Bartley Anne Bean Alvin Biggums Lenny Blunt Sandy Bolin Tim Bond Joanne Bosworth Therrell Bradley Kay Bradshaw Debbie Brantley Cliff Brashaw Marianne Brenner James Brighton Carl Brown Terry Brown 83 Mike Brummett Pat Brummett Brenda Buck Eddie Buckinger Kevin Buckner Tim Burgess Sue Byrd Cathy Cain Ronald Caldwell Woodrow Calhoun James Carney David Carrier Debbie Carroll Susan Carroll Judy Carter Wayne Cason Jim Cawdill Rufus Cawthon Joan Cherry Dianne Cheshire 184 Linda Childree Susan Childree Rick Church Martha Cockrell Doug Connell Dan Cordell Steve Corson James Cotter Chuck Cox Christie Craig Jeanne Craig Annf Culbertson David Cutchen Larry Cutchin Tony Cutchin Nick D’Andrea John Daniels Linda Davis Jack Dibrell Richard Dreiser 185 The Juniors broke candy sales records again this year. Ikey, who was bom October 8, 1952, was the son of Major and Mrs. Isaac Richard Gamer. Ikey was a member of the Carroll High School Varsity Basketball team, the Key Club, and the President of the Fort Rucker Bowling League. He left an impression of devotion and kindness, and appreciation so unique that it shines brighter than anything we ever remember. The manner in which he went about things exemplified his excellent character and leadership abilities. These memories will always remain in our hearts and minds only with the thought and hope that someday we will meet again. Ikey Garner 197 In Memoriam Kenneth Smith November 24,1952 — July 7,1969 An honor student and member of the Carroll High Band was killed on July 11,1969. The car he was driving came into a ninety degree curve and overturned. Kenneth Gene Smith, sixteen, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene A. Smith. As a member of the Drifting Sands, Interact Club, and Drafting Club, he played an important role in the life of Carroll High School. Other than school activities, he played the piano, guitar, and the saxophone. He was a member of the Carroll High School Band as well as the Carroll High Stage Band. His main ambition in life was to be in the field of architecture. Ken was a lively, cool-headed person who could accomplish any goal he put his mind to. He was a person who could be depended upon no matter what situation might arrive. His warm smile, casual walk, and outgoing personality were characteristics of Ken that we will always remember. 198 SENIORS Left to right: Debbie Baxley, Reporter; Linda Lindstrand, Treasurer; Lisa Sherbert, Secretary; Don Howard, Vice-President; Allan Kelley, President.
